I like this subreddit. Do you want to see more r/Bestof? The stories tend to be longer and more in-depth because of the updates, and the videos don't have a "theme" because the stories come from multiple other subreddits.

The update on the third story was so refreshing. Sometimes people just need a wake up call and this seems to be what he needed. I love that although it might seem like a small trip everyone's reaction obviously was his kick. Depression is a killer and can kill any desire or drive. Glad he got the help he needed to one prove his mom wrong but two step up and be a good father and husband.

Yeah that was really heartwarming for me, I have depression, I can recognize the symptoms. Knowing that he was letting it control his life and affect other people's opinions of him, it's so sad. Until last year, I would try therapy, realise it doesn't help, stop and go back to trying to be less lazy on my own. Last year, after another round of useless therapy, my mom finally told me that I have adhd and scolded me again for waisting my time. With this new information, I tracked down an adhd expert who confirmed the diagnosis (plus autism). I'll start therapy next month, then I'll clean up the mess that's my life I just hope, I don't lose my job in the meantime due to some adhd looking like laziness

The update on the last story was absolutely brilliant. When he saw things from other people's perspective he paid attention, and used it as a springboard to be more open and honest and to remove as much negativity (ie his emotionally abusive mother) from his life as possible. What a story to end the episode on. I couldn't imagine being in the positions of anyone in this video. My grandparents grew up with nothing and asked for nothing other than a hug and a visit every fortnight. My partner grew up with nothing and asks for nothing, although sometimes she wants name-brand foods. I grew up with something but don't ask for anything other than the medicine that keeps me out of hospital (God bless the NHS). My parents are as supportive as they can be, but nowhere near overbearing

My mother and step father did the same thing when they got married. Both sides of the family got an all expenses paid trip to Mexico (Isla Mujeres is beautiful, go there). We just had to pay for food and any extras since we didn't go all inclusive. No one complained, everyone was just happy they got to go to Mexico. Not a rich family, but it was literally a $2k wedding. An officiant, mom, step-dad, me, my kid, my sister, her fiancee, his son, his sons wide and thats it. Dinner was at a fancy restaurant and we all paid for ourselves. They specifically did this so they could surprise us all with plane tickets and accommodations for everyone at the wedding, and extended family too! Aunts, Uncles, cousins, etc. They booked half the hotel. It was amazing! We stayed for a week, mom and step dad stayed an extra week by themselves. My step dad unfortunately passed away from lung cancer a year later.

As a Caucasian man married to a Chinese woman... (I feel ya rSlash)... I have experienced some of this as well. My MIL would constantly get upset with something petty and threaten to go back to China. my wife would always cave and think she was a bad daughter and that she would need to be nicer to her mother. I kept telling her that her mother was guilt tripping her. I told her that next time she says that, to say something like "Ok, we'll go get your tickets tomorrow". I was never so proud of my wife when she actually did it and the stunned look on my MIL's face was priceless. That threat stopped for many months. It still happens from time-to-time but nowhere near as often.

That last story is a perfect example of how it feels to actually have depression; not just "I'm sad!" but "I'm worthless, why try if it won't go well? People don't expect me to do anything, and they don't trust me". I also had a wake up call for my depression and anxiety. It wasn't as strong as this one, but a small question: "why am I always sad and angry, even in moments I shouldn't be?" As someone who has healed from long term depression and anxiety it makes me happy to see others, like the husband in that last story, to come out on top of their depression and anxiety. Don't let anyone stand in your way to healing, you can do it!

I literally LOLed when you said "OMG I can't believe reddit actually had a positive impact on someone's life". I 100% understand that with some of the threads you post. However reddit has made my life SOOOO much better. I've learned sooooo many awesome skills there (and youtube). Just remember between reddit and youtube you can learn sooo much, enough that if someone really tries they can (IMO) get a 6 figure job.

*First OP:* older people don't give a f u c k. They have no filter and no shame and expect people to respect them just because they've been on Earth longer than others^. Good for OP for standing up to her grandparents respectfully. And good for her for finding success in her dream career. ^ Obviously, not _all_ old people are like this, but _enough_ of them are. *Second OP:* And _that's_ why you should listen to your gut. Best of luck to OP. *Third OP:* If it weren't for the update, I would've suggested that OP divorce her husband. I'm glad OP and her husband had a heart-to-heart, and I'm glad OP's husband is cutting off contact with his mother. To answer the initial question, OP is NTA.

I hate the idea of respecting your elders. Respect people who deserve it. Age has nothing to do with deserving respect. You have to be worthy of it.

I can just feel the weight being lifted off the Dr hearing his story. I always feel so bad for people who get manipulated into relationships and find out the person who they really are is much different then who they pretended to be. I've known girls in the 20s who did that kind of thing like pretending to be into stuff the guy likes to get into a relationship because they didn't want to be alone but I wouldn't expect that out of someone older unless she just thought his money would make her happy enough to stay. Idk Anyway, you can tell she was obviously emotionally abusive at least and clearly stressed him out over the finances. I can't imagine trying to push the person I love to do a job they couldn't stand doing just to have more money ( for whatever she was spending all his money on). I really feel hopeful for that guy. I bet he is living his best life and is happier then ever. And probably shocked at how much money he can really spend when he doesn't have to pay for his expensive wife. He could probably afford a nice long vacation after all is said and done. Good thing he had a pre-nup. That makes things so much easier on him. I always try to tell my friends to do that but nobody ever listens. Sorry, its a long comment. I just feel really happy for the guy.

1st story: The amount of BS old people can get away in Asia is way out of line. There are even videos of old people purposefully, no they ain't mentally disable, making trains late just because they know they can get away with. Honestly, better cut those old parasites out of your life. Alongside whoever want to simp for them. 2nd story: Consider the fact there arent kids a good things. Never. Ever. Marry due peer pressure, and if your gut feeling is telling you "We need to run", you don't run, you get into a cab and bail. Not saying she is a gold digger, but sure she ain't dating broken n. Also, they have been married but haven't had s.ex in years?... Yeaaaah, call me cynical misogynistic, but I wouldn't be surprised if she met her needs on the side. I hope OP is happier now. 3rd story: Hey OP, are you sure you count right?, sounds like you have 6 kids. 5 kids and a manchild At least he is open to try and change. I hope he does change for better. And to NOT let the kids alone with MIL who is a sociopath. If he did that to her own kid, you can bet the grandkids ar enext

1st story: OP's Asian family does have a very "don't rock the boat" mentality, which is familiar. If you're capable of appeasing someone, you're sorta expected to. This goes double when someone's older than you. I can really sense the exact family dynamics that are going on with OP's grandparents

2nd story: I agree. How is it possible to spend $300,000 in a year. I would have to buy a house in one payment, just to spend anywhere near that much in a year.(I don't buy designer stuff. Last time I splurged money on myself was on a $500 Air Conditioner earlier this year, which I need for this month.)

That last story, man. I've struggled with depression and anxiety since I was a kid. I'm 34, and I remember even as a five year old I was screwed up. I'm in tears. I'm so happy for that guy!! He got a HUGE wakeup call, and now gets to enjoy time with his wife and girls. It's easy to isolate yourself, put your head in the ground and hope your troubles away. So happy for his wife and kids, and of course him. He got the kick in the ass he needed, in the way he needed. This would've ended in a divorce if the wife didn't make that post, then show him the comments. He needed that.. I'm gonna listen to this one again. Haha.

3rd story, shout out to the wife. As someone who has suffered from depression my entire adult life a partner who can give me tough love and snap me out of a horrible mindset, give me a shove when needed to get my life together, and FORGIVE her husband and believe that under all the mental health issues he is a good man who just needs support..... WOW, that is the kind of partner you dream of. It's good to know good partners are still out there. Sometimes when you are in a funk, you can't see yourself or behavior clearly. You lose confidence and direct negativity at the wrong people. Sometimes you just need a little extra help to see things clear. Then you man up and make necessary changes for you family and partner. That is the kind of love story I can get behind.

Last one: People are people and that means everyone has different reasons for the things that they do in life. What might look like laziness in one context is actually depression in another. People will assume and label you, especially when the one providing the context is frustrated and doesn't even think toward any other possibility. As someone with depression, I have to force myself to get out of bed everyday. Sometimes it doesn't seem worth the effort. I have to tell myself that it is worth it, that there are things that need to get done and people to see. I am so happy that I have people that support me and make getting up worth it. I also guess one positive aspect to anxiety is that I literally worry too much to stay in bed for long because their are things I HAVE to do.

Story 3: After hearing that update, it is nice to hear that OP's husband turned over a new leaf. He realized that he was being verbally abused and manipulated by his mother and took the steps to cut her out of his life forever. He also talked it over with his former boss to get in some vacation time and then quitting that job soon after. Then his FIL steps in to help him find a job that he enjoys and it allows him to work from home and spend time with his kids.

At our local clinic there's a laminated paper in every exam room that says "Scrub in, scrub out" . It means that every time a nurse or doctor enters or leaves the room a patient is in they need to scrub their hands. Idk how much per year the staff makes here, but I'm willing to wager that only a few of the doctors make six figures per year. The hospital chain they work for is notorious for being a revolving door for specialists and nursing staff, because of low (for the industry) wages, a lack of care for the treatment and needs of their staff, and inter-office bullying. But, the point is that that the majority people in the medical field have to wash their hands a lot at work, not just surgeons and specialists.

To be fair, RSlash, if the doctor is making $300K a year, they don't have $300K of discretionary money. First, take 50% off the top. Then take off the mortgage and household bills. It's legit possible that there's only $50-60K of money left over. Now, that's a LOT of cash to spend... but it's not $300K... and those expensive things she's buying will eat it pretty quickly. (She's totally in the wrong, and I'm glad OP is moving on!)
