That stitch is frigging difficult and slow, too. $400 for a Catherine's Wheel, wool, multicolour, queen size blanket is suuuper cheap. I learned to crochet because of that post 😂 I wanted to see how long it takes to crochet a scarf in that stitch. Took me about 15 hours for a very short scarf.

My nan used to have, what seemed like, an endless supply of crochet knit blankets in what I used to call the circles pattern I now know it’s a Catherine Wheel pattern but I don’t know where she got so many of them from??? She really didn’t like knitting, preferred sewing, but she has a massive social group, so big that she routinely drops off bags of new-old clothes and fresh fruit and food So maybe????

I was widowed when our kids were small. It never occurred to me to demand lower prices, freebies or any other favour because I was a "poor single mother". Just finished her sophomore year in high school. She also already has 18 of the 22 credits needed to graduate in my state. She will be graduating in december. After her 1st semester as a junior. So I am a crocheter and I decided to do the basic math for man hours x minimum wage. If you say she crochets solely on that project from 9-5 (like a regular job) that’s 8 hours a day, then 2-4 weeks for the completion time, 8hr x 14 days = 112 hours or 8hr x 28 days = 224 hours. Multiply those with minimum wage in VA (and most states) $7.25. So if it’s 112 hours x $7.25 = $812 (not including the price of materials), if it took longer then 224 hours x $7.25 = $1,624. Add in just basic yarn materials and the grand total would come out being *$972* - *$1,784* So yeah you could say $400 for a queen sized 100% wool blanket in a complicated stitch would be totally worth it.

I commissioned a lady to crochet a beautiful shawl I wanted to give to my aunt who was really looking for sick as a nice surprise for her in winter. The material had to be fairly light weight as she couldn't have anything too heavy on her shou shoulders. This lady gave me her quote which I actually thought was low. She made the shawl which came out perfectly and my aunt absolutely loved. I ended up giving the lady more money than she had quoted I was just so grateful for the job and the time and effort she put into it.

In Michigan it is 9.65 , what states pay 7.25 ? Edit : Just looked it up , I didn’t realize so many states are 7.25 damn. At our restaurant we pay our tipped employees 8.90 an hour which is over double the tipped min wage of 3.50 ish. Waitresses average 16$ dollars an hour Drivers average 15$ an hour We like to pay them so high so our customers don’t feel like they HAVE to tip. Even though they still end up doing it lol

The blanket story makes me cringe. I make scarves and blankets and have people trying to make me lower my prices on my items. Makes me upset. Note I charge a reasonable price on scarves usually an average price of 15.

It is unfortunate but a lot of people don't understand that handmade items will always cost more. The most frequent response I've heard from someone asking for a cheaper price, is as the idiot in post said 'but blank store sells them for only blank'.

It’s so hard to make these things by hand so i understand the prices that people set. If it seems like too much i’ll say something but i usually understand after they explain why it’s set at that price.

I normally do materials cost times 3. For smaller more intricate items, like amigurumi, I might add a few more dollars on for time spent. Fucking dragons take me all day to make.

I've watched a lot of these 'choosing beggars' videos the last few days. What astounds me, almost more than the level of idiocy of the CBs, is how unbelievably patient people are in dealing with them. For example, in this video, the guy wanting the crocheted blanket for a tenth its worth... he rains abuse down on the seller, and s/he remains extremely polite throughout. I would have lost it about three messages into that exchange and R/Slash would have had to beep my entire text.
