@@Random-yu4xg this was not in conversation, it was in an uploaded video. It’s ridiculous to apply the same expectations. I truly believe make-a-wish should make rules that the CHILD decides and if the parents try to intervene they aren’t allowed. The staff member in the first story knew OP was being forced ans still let her choose her MOTHERS wish.
@dragonofkilln9663
@dragonofkilln9663 2 года назад
Only time a parent should intervene is if the child is incapable of talking or is mentally unresponsive. Even then, make a wish should make a judgement on whether or not this is for the child or the parent. If it's not for the child. They should take the most common wishes that children of that age bracket enjoy and just draw from it. Completely take the parent out of the equation in terms of deciding.

All they can do is follow the wish of the child, they can't bar the legal guardian from interacting with the kid or monitor all engagement 24/7 until the wish is fulfilled to prevent any manipulation or coercion. All they can do is listen to the kids final decision and try to convince the kid to do what they actually want and not what the family wants.

In the case of my younger brother when he got his make a wish he was like 4 years old and was incapable of making the decision, but my parents thought of him the entire time. He really liked tractors when he was little, especially John Deer, and my parents asked the foundation if we all could go tour the John Deer factory in Illinois (I think) but you had be 18+ to your the factory, no exceptions, so instead the correspondent for our family said "well how about Wisconsin Dells?" And this made complete sense to my parents, it was just over the border in Wisconsin from Minnesota and it was only a couple hours away. We got a week long vacation at the Kalahari Resort with free games of bowling, free Lazer tag, free arcade tokens, we got to experience the entire resort and the staff was awesome

I remember, by circumstance, having the honor to help a young child with her make a wish. My old stable fulfilled this girl's wish to own a pony by working to give her a ride where she could do anything. I stayed to help groom the little pony, and was an extra runner to help hold the girl in the saddle. This girl was so brave, and had ridden at a stable where I leased my pony, Sweety, to. Good Ol Sweets had been the horse she rode, and she'd learned so much and was so delighted to talk about riding. She was like 9 and leaving my country to go die with her family as she hadn't responded to treatment and couldn't endure it anymore. This family was so kind, even giving us a lovely chocolate cake on a fasting religious event. They were so delighted someone was willing to do this on such short notice, and had a good laugh when I told some funny Sweety stories pre stable days. For a few hours, I got to help make this girl and her family smile, even if I was mostly a background set of hands. This family were so dedicated to their daughter, they sacrificed elements of their religion, Islam, for this time to make her wish come true. The father shook my hand as an equal, although it was clear he wasn't familiar with shaking women's hands. They brought us food despite it being fasting. They were around women dressed immodestly in some of sects of Islam. They let that woman with their son and did everything with a smile and tearful thank yous. They sacrificed their life to fufill their daughter's wish of dying with her grandparents. So to hear a parent stole make-a-wish actually makes me physically cry. After seeing this amazing family, seeing this gorgeous girl I knew would be dead by the end of the year, the belief someone could steal from their kids is just unspeakable.

I like thinking that God cares enough about me to let me have bad things happen so that I can learn from them, even if all I’m learning is how to appreciate what I’ve got and accept what I can’t fix. That and it's sometimes the case that when someone dies in a car accident, the survivor pays the family of the deceased as a form of settlement to avoid the case going to court regardless of fault. They were probably applying that logic in that situation which could be why the tanod was there too.

I can attest to that. My uncle is Filipino and married my aunt (who is American) and my uncles relatives (who still live in the Philippines) are constantly asking him to send money, clothes and whatever they want because according to them "You're rich, you can afford it", which he can't. @@darksheikgaming it's a stereotype here that foreigner = rich. We don't realize the cost of living is very different in our countries. But your can't totally blame them, they're victims of there circumstances. Heck, I've always thought that life in the US is much easier than here until I heard stories like these. When your situation is hopeless and your government isn't helping you, you grab on to any way out of the struggles even if it means throwing away your dignity. Being able to marry a foreigner is romanticized as THE way to get rich or at least out of poverty.
@MuunRabpit13
@MuunRabpit13 2 года назад
Unfortunately, that's pretty true. There's a mentality that if you're from a foreign country, you're rich, and that means you have money to spare. Not all of us are like that though, but there are some, especially those closer to the poverty line, who think that if you can easily get money from scamming someone, you should. I've had kids who destroyed our car, and the parents blatantly refusing to pay for the damages even though their kids were caught in video, then demand that we 'pay for their child's therapist (spoiler, their child was a happy little shit who thought there was nothing wrong with jumping on the roof and hood of a parked car) because their traumatized child is now too scared to go out.' Funny enough, their 16 year old daughter was seen hanging out on the sidewalk with her friends talking about how they should get money because they were filmed without them knowing. they lost that case.
@krdiaz8026
@krdiaz8026 2 года назад
It's also possible that the parents, or at least the mom, didn't know any better and were told OP owed them money, so the mom's tears could be genuine. OP should have known better and not stayed in such an area, foreigner or not. It's not unknown for some people from the slums to come up with such schemes to get money. For example, people used to deliberately slam themselves against cars and motorcycles so they could say they've been hit and then demand money. People used to just give money to avoid going to court, but nowadays many cars have dashcams front and back, so what drivers do is go to the nearest police station, show the recording, and that's the end of it. Another example is the car wash boys who will wash your windshield during a stop, and if you don't give them money they will smash your windows with a rock. This happened to me when I was in a cab, one boy even tried to intimidate me and tried to open the door, which was locked. Fortunately the light turned green and we sped away. The driver asked if I was ok, and I said, "Yeah." And that was the end of it.

Story 3: It's most likely extortion. It is pretty common here in the Philippines. There are some cases that "parents" or "guardians" would most likely find a way to extort people, even with the expense of loosing a kin or a relative. For example, a person would purposely let themselves get run over or bump into a running vehicle, dead or not, the accomplice would extort the owner of the vehicle.

I was in choir for a little bit, so I knew basic notes and stuff, but not a lot of songs, although I didn't care because she was in her death bed fighting to keep her eyes open. But after my grandma died and we got back home, my mom began bitching at me about my "awful singing" and I screamed at her saying "sorry I was singing for your DYING mother!" And she began crying. My mom is very entitled that's why I'm keeping her out of my life for now on. She has always chose shopping over feeding her children, which I can't forgive. That's when I blew up, I couldn't be quiet any longer, I gave my best voice for my grandma and showed an entitled person a lesson, which I'll never regret.

The fact that the mother in the first story wanted to use OP's Make-A-Wish thing for her own pleasure instead of her kid's. It's OP's wish, not her mother's. Basically OP's mother wanted to use her kid's Make-A-Wish thing as a free trip so she wouldn't pay for the expenses. If any of my future kids have a cancer that could potentially kill them, the first thing I would do is give some suggestions on what they want to wish for. But other than those suggestions, it's up to my kid to decide on what their Make-A-Wish thing should be. I'm not that parent who forces my kid to make decisions based on what *I* want. I want my kid to make decisions based on what *they* want. It's their choice on where they want to visit or who to meet, not my choice.

The first story with a mother literally guilt-tripping her own daughter who’s dying of cancer into taking a vacation instead of meeting her favorite band ALONG with going on vacation and only agreeing to go if SHE paid for it takes entitlement to a whole new level. We visited Disney and few other places. There's a village across from Disney where the Make A Wish families stay. I got sick while there and they had a doctor come to our cottage in the village. Later my parents got tickets to see NSYNC for my sister's & I but of course I ended up in the hospital. So my aunt and uncle took my sister's & cousins. And then later my grandma got tickets to a different NSYNC concert for my mom and I. But all that to say I made that decision. I WAS NOT coursed into it. My parents are not those kind of ppl. Op's mom definitely deserves the high ah rating.

@matthewdovidas4213

@bostonrailfan2427 no. A Parent Plus loan is a loan in the parents name and the parents name only meant as a way for a parent to get a government backed loan with a lower interest rate to support their children's education. They don't need to take it, and a parent can't even take out a PLUS loan until after the student takes out both Federal Direct Subsidized and Federal Direct Unsubsidized loans, as well as applied for any federal and state level grants and scholarships, like the Pell Grant, that they would be eligible for and the loan only is to offset the difference in the education cost. Usually it accounts for a maximum of about 30 to 40 percent of the total cost of education, and if the parent doesn't want to take it out then the student would have to find private loans to make up the difference. A plus loan is the father's loan. And if the father does OP isn't stuck with it, just like if OP does the father isn't stuck with her loan. Is his responsibility and OP is still paying 600 bucks a month to him to cover most of it and OP gave 2500 bucks upfront when they don't need to. But they didn't want to be stuck with a promissory note to pay for more then they already are because they took out that loan. And another thing: another benefit of the PLUS loan is that the payments are tax deductible so if OP pays it the father is getting a free tax break, whereas it's supposed to be paid by the father in exchange for not having to pay taxes on the income used towards it as a refundable tax credit. So when OPs father gets the money back on their taxes for the payments made is the father going to give that money to OP? I have a very high suspicion that the answer to that is no. And OP doesn't get that tax benefit for paying the father's loan.

I've talked about my own family friends with the Make-A-Wish drama on here: long story short, a mother convinced her dying (YES, legit TERMNALLY ILL) daughter to get a stupid computer instead of her own wish, so the mother could use it when she died. Nice lady, huh? I just want to let OP in the first story know: karma WILL come back around, my darling. It will. In the last year, this mother has had this happen: her husband left her, part of her house burned down, she lost her job, and now she's showing signs of a potential memory disorder. Did it take 17 years? Yes. But karma still came back for that bitch and it WILL come for your mother, just you wait. There is no excuse for ANY family member to steal wishes from their own flesh and blood. This program is put in place to give children either a last happy memory OR give them hope to get better, give them strength and courage to fight. My GOD, what a terrible mother. If I ever had kids and one was so ill they need Make A Wish, I wouldn't give two shits about what they wanted: sit in a bowl of spaghetti for a day for all I care. IT'S THEIRS, NOT MINE!

I live in the Philippines, and honestly, I feel like the parents in the last story are both entitled and opportunists. Some people here think of people who live in other countries as walking ATMs, and there's a chance that the parents knew about it, and they instantly thought "easy cash" and used their son's death as an excuse to extort money from OP. I also feel bad that OP got scammed about the house deposit. Some landlords here are really scummy and would take advantage of anyone and anything that they could.

My son had cancer when he was a baby - thankfully it was completely gone before his first birthday. We hit the 5 year survivor mark this year and it was such a huge relief to reach that milestone. Chances of relapse go down so much once you’ve made it to 5 years. That 6 months (and the recovery period after) changed me permanently - having a baby with cancer wasn’t something I ever envisioned for myself (or anyone). That being said - being a teenager with cancer is so much harder than being a baby. I got to know some teens in the clinic during chemotherapy- my baby didn’t know what he was missing. Those teens had made it almost all the way through - and then had it ripped away. I’m so glad OP survived and with such a good outlook but - I think she should’ve cut mom and stepdad out immediately. Such abuse. And of course she caved to their manipulation - most healthy teenagers would’ve. One who was fighting cancer at the same time? Personally, I think there must be a follow up make a wish something or other- this can’t be the only time a shitty parent has commandeered the make a wish choice…

It shouldn’t even matter whether or not the mother would care to see the band. She should have been happy seeing her child have the best day ever, especially seeing as this could have been one of the LAST times they could’ve had a memorable experience. My own mother took me to a meet and greet hosted by one of my favorite RU-vidrs at the time, and it wasn’t even a dying wish for me because I wasn’t dying. I just happened to be able to go to this meet and greet and really, really wanted to go. My mom bought me a ticket to go and drove 3 hours to see the smile on my face when I met these people. My mom didn’t even watch their videos, but knew how big of a fan I was and wanted to see me have the best day of my life. Parents should be happy seeing their children happy, even if the parent doesn’t necessarily care about whatever the child is interested in. Especially if it’s their DYING WISH.

I'm absolutely appalled by the first story as well. Unbelievable. I give OP a LOT of credit for still maintaining a relationship with her mother because I don't think I would be able to. If mom did THIS, what else is she capable of?! I imagine OP could write an entire book full of stories of the asinine, selfish, unnatural behavior of her mother. The obvious silver lining here is the AMAZING fact that she survived her cancer despite the odds being stacked against her 🤗💕 So, so glad for her!

I heard about an even worst "Make a Wish" entitled parent story. Not sure if it's true or not, it's just too disgusting for me to fully believe that someone could be that narcissistic, but the story went that a mother tried to get her own extensive plastic surgery paid for by Make a Wish instead of fulfilling her dying kids wish. Of course Make a Wish said "Oh hell nah!"

This is the second story we've had about moms stealing their kids' "Make-A-Wish" moment. Why do moms do this? Also, most of us NBs prefer they/them pronouns. Not all of us, of course, but it's the safest bet when you want to avoid misgendering.

In the 2nd story. It is possible to make all 3 of your kids hate you. My dad basically ruined everything that my siblings and I liked about him He had taken us on holidays but spent them yelling He told me I was an accident on my birthday I'm planning on changing my last name to my mum's last name, and once I can go no contact with my dad. He deserves it. After all, I grew up with because of him.

@@WishGender it was definitely painful to hear, and not the first time either. I doubt it's malicious but rslash really needs to be more careful because it could be devastating to a trans/nb person hearing themselves being misgendered like that by a popular youtuber, I know if I was openly trans and this happened it'd be really upsetting

I know, I heard "he" and suddenly I was like "Oh no, here it comes... it's a really small nitpick that may seem insignificant to some, but to other it means the world." And then of course whenever you point out a 'political' issue (politics=these people exist), someone else will inevitably crawl out of the woodwork to 'defend' Slashy. We're not attacking him, we just want him to be a little more careful.

Yea I hope that he sees this or my comment (I commented similarly above). I'm soooooo used to this sorta stuff but rslash really is one of my favourites and I was for some reason just assuming he would know to say they so it mad my stomach get all uncomfortable :( I'm hoping its not malicious but I am concerned simply because in other stories he will read out (23F) but in this one he skipped over (NB23) and then later in the post it says they haven't told their parents they are nonbinary yet and he skipped that part too... but it wasn't really totally necessary to the story so its hard to say. I really hope it was just an honest mistake.

My narcissist mother put her own needs above my 32-yr old sister who was dying of cancer and my sister's best friend ripped her a new butthole. Mom didn't care, though. The 2nd story--again with my mother--she caused us siblings to move far away and I eventually cut ties.

@@gregistopal Normally I would agree with you, but at the same time, he usually doesn't skip when they put their gender and age in parenthesis, and this time he did, so it kinda feels like maybe he's doing it on purpose, and it just seems really disrespectful to be using someone's story in his videos if he's not even going to respect their gender identity.
