When Curse of DarKastle closed you sounded bummed. But this closure sounds like tragic melancholy for you. Clearly, KD has a special place in your heart, perhaps beyond what BGW has. I hope they replace it with a really well themed coaster given the roll in played in the park. It's probably wishful thinking but it would be cool to have an American version of Taron built in its place.

I’m going to share my personal story with this coaster since I heard it was closing. I first rode this coaster in 2000 as a young coaster enthusiast on his way to college in Virginia. It was my first visit to kings dominion and the ride was pretty new and a featured attraction at the park. I made my mom wait for hours with me to ride and she still has the picture of us riding to this day. I found myself in Virginia again for the first time in about 18 years and revisited Kings dominion. A lot had changed in the park as a lot has changed with me since then but volcano was still there blasting. I rode it next to a young kid and he asked me if I had ever ridden this coaster before.. I smiled and said “ yea a while ago about 18 years ago when I was in college.” He looked at me and said “you don’t look a day over 26!” I laughed and thought of my memories back then on my first ride on Volcano and now that I’m back here at 36. Time does really launch you forward fast, sometimes twice. This coaster will alway have a special place in my heart and will always be remembered. 🌋🎢 ride on ride on ride on

Wasn't happy seeing shockwave go but I could care less about volcano as long as it's replaced with an invert and not a lousy kiddie ride or flat ride. I think they have plans to add a new invert to replace it since that style of coaster is pretty much mandatory at parks today....or better yet a wing coaster.

I had planned this to be my 200th coaster when I went back in 2012. Got to the park one night rode I305 for my 199th and then waited in line for volcano for 2 hours just to get it to be my 200th. Rode it front row at night amazing experience. After we left the park we went to I think Denny’s across the street and idk if the mechanics were having fun but Volcano started shooting fire non stop. For like a full 2 mins. Watching that thing shoot fire that much was awesome. Unfortunately only got to ride it the once for my 200th, but I’m glad I did. I trust Kings Dominion decision and have all respect to the maintenance team. Can’t wait to see the future. But forever remember Volcano: The Blast Coaster.

Night time was a whole experience for the Voclano. On my first amusement park date with my now husband, we chose this for our last ride before closing and they randomly shot off fireworks as we finished up the first twist coming out of the top. Beautiful moment!

Lovely tribute! Never had the chance to ride it - was due to visit Kings Dominion in 17' but a much delayed flight meant I had to change plans. However your memories were truly relatable. I was moved listening to your story of what Volcano meant to you, and the quirky anecdotes about roll backs. I much agree we shouldn't criticise Kings Dominion for this difficult decision. With the brilliant addition of Twisted Timbers, the park has a bright future. The land cleared once Volcano is gone is a playground with tremendous potential! RIP Volcano, and best luck to Kings Dominion for the future 😊🤞

Just saw the news as well. This was my first invert and it holds a very special place in my heart.I waited what felt like four or five hours the night that it opened to ride it. I got in line with my best friend close to the cutoff time and we waited forever. It was so worth it though. I will never forget the noise of the blast off and the feeling of shooting out of the top of the volcano into the night sky and the final swoop back into the mountain. This ride is one of the reasons I fell in love with coasters. Although I am of course saddened by this loss, I am glad that Kings Dominion gave us two decades of a truly unique and incredible ride.

My last experience with it was amazing. On that Sunday after opening day of 2018 I was marathoning i305. It happened to close for mechanical issues so I went to Volcano in hopes that it would have a short line. It turns out it just opened from mechanical issues so there was no one in line. I rode it 8 times in a row with 3 of them being in the front. It was 40 degrees so it was super painful but super fun. By the last 2 rides no one was there and I had the train to myself. My last ride I chose to sit in the middle because of how painful it was to sit in the front. Two employees jumped on because no one was there and it was the last ride of the night. I walked off of it amazed. That was one of my greatest memories of all time. I’m so thankful for this ride and that KD kept it going for so long. I’m surely going to miss it, there will never be anything like it. My wish for the future is extremely unlikely would be to bring this ride back, but be sure it’s more reliable.

I live in Va and i went this weekend to the park opening for 2019. The Volcano still has it’s track and the mountain is still there. As i walked up to it, the sign of the Volcano was gone, there was a black fence surrounding the entrance so nobody could get in. In front of the fence, are lit up candles and flowers and a card you could sign telling your wonderful times you had on the ride . Ive been going to Kings Dominion since i was one years old . I am now 14 . Volcano has such a soft spot for my heart, that i literally cried seeing candles in front of it.

So went to KD when you went once, and I tried to find you throughout the WHOLE DAY. Unfortunately, I could not find you and I left the park at the end of the day. Fast forward a few weeks and the parody came out. Sure enough, I saw myself IN YOUR VIDEO waiting in the queue for volcano. This brought me such joy knowing that while I did not get to meet you (despite you literally being behind me--ironic I know), I will forever be in one of your videos. So thank you Volcano, for allowing me to be in one of your videos and for almost allowing me to meet you:)

What sucks about this is that I wanna go to Kings Dominion for spring break this year, and volcano was one of the main reasons I wanted to go. This ride is one of the rides that gave KD the edge over BGW for me. I’ve been watching pov videos and this ride looks insane in every single video. I could literally imagine me and my family on it, and if we do go to KD, it’s gonna really suck walking by this ride and not being able to ride it. I completely understand why they’re removing it, but I really wish I could’ve rode it before they closed it

This video means a lot to me, Taylor. KD is one of only two major parks I've been to, and I had a wonderful experience on Volcano. on August 5th, 2017 with Fast Lane Plus, I rode this 3 times that day, with the last one being the last ride we rode that night. Even though it was frustrating waiting for the front row (two "handicapped" people got right on through the handicap entrance. They weren't handicapped!) That ride stuck out to me more than almost anything I experienced. My brother and I completely blasted (pun intended) into complete darkness through the first half of the ride, and we see the whole park completely lit up from outside the artificial volcano. It was a sight to behold, and I think about the dreamlike experience almost everyday. This memory will always stick with me as long as I live. Keep up your fantastic work, my man :)

My trip where I rode Volcano solidified me being an enthusiast. Before a trip to Virginia in 2014 I had been a big fan of amusement parks. I was a pass holder at Holiday World and had been to KI, CP and Knott's. My dad told me that I could pick what amusement park we would go to in 2014. I researched amusement parks and being familiar with Cedar Fair decided on Kings Dominion. I was so excited for the trip that I discovered this channel in the process. The sub count was just under 10000 and I started watching all the ranking videos. On the trip we also went to BGW the day before but I got sick and spent the second half of the day in first aid. The next day we went to KD with fast lane plus. The first ride we rode was Volcano and I absolutely loved it putting it in my top 5 ahead of rides like Maverick and Xcelerator. I rode I 6 times that day including last ride of the night in the front row with fireworks going off. Seeing fireworks upside down high in the air was my favorite coaster moment up to that point. After that amazing experience I went from a coaster fan to a hardcore enthusiast. Thank You 🌋

While I am surprised to hear this news now, it's not unexpected. With all the problems the ride has had during its history, I am honestly surprised it lasted as long as it did. That's not to say it wasn't a decent ride. I enjoyed it but it was usually closed when I would visit the park over the years. My very first ride on it in 1999 resulted in my very first rollback on a ride ever. You described exactly how I felt during your rollback.. Not sure if many old-school enthusiasts remember this but back in the early 90's, ACE used to make VHS tapes highlighting the Coaster Cons. In the 1992 tape, there is a quote from the late Ray Ueberroth (ACE's president back then) about his desire to see a type of suspended coaster that would make its way down the mountain. This section of the video also displayed a graphic of Ray's dream ride. I suspect the original idea of Volcano could have started with Ray's idea but I can't verify that.

Volcano was my first big coaster. Loch Ness Monster was my first upside down one, but like you said this was the first coaster I had experienced with such a high intensity level. That first launch at 10 years old was the closest I’ve ever come to pissing myself on a ride. I just remember screaming around that first turn and hitting the second launch/shooting up the Volcano wondering what on earth was happening to me. The heartline rolls had the most insane hang time, and genuinely made me feel as if I was gonna fall out of the seat. It was incredible. No matter the wait and despite it being at my home park, I always made sure to ride this coaster at least once (if it was open) just because of how special it was. I’ll always remember it and am surely sad to see it go, but also looking forward to what KD has in store for the future :)

Thanks for this video, it serves as a sort of grave stone for my favorite coaster of all time, and i'm here to leave some flowers and light a candle on the altar like so many others have. some time around 2005, i got about a dozen of my friends to go together to kings dominion. i was hyping the volcano to everyone, and once they rode it, they agreed. best coaster of all time. we all decided to buy T-shirts on the spot, and spent the rest of the day at KD in our matching shirts, declaring ourselves "the cult of the volcano". we wore our volcano uniforms to many parks after that, and embraced the coaster nerd thing as much as we could. i hadn't ridden coasters at all in almost 10 years, when i finally made it back to KD just this last fall. the volcano being down was a huge disappointment, but i figured i'd get the chance to ride it again this year. when i heard the announcement that it was closing, it was like hearing a close friend had just died. the volcano wasnt just a coaster. it was a reason to live. nothing can ever replace it.

So i went through my google maps location history, because i miraculously was at KD in april because BGW w/ coaster tour was my graduation gift, and since i had a platinum pass, i was like hey drop me off at KD before we go to the hotel. So the day i was there was the evening of April 27th, the park was DEAD, immediatly rode Dominator, then to my favorite, Volcano. And it was open, and like i said, park was dead. Walk on, rode it like 7 times at least, because i knew how rare walk ons are with that thing. Idk its incredibly weird thinking about how i might have very well gotten some of the last rides ever on it (especially it not even being my home park). If anyone knows the exact date, i would love to know. And alot of rides on it too (like what??). Im gonna miss that ride, i might try and make something like it in NL2 as a tribute. Anyway, the coaster was very special to me, it was 100% my fav coaster there because im really a sucker for a good launch. I remember when i first rode it in 2015 i think, i was like w h o a thats is insane. The first time i was at KD, was like 2007 or something, and i was too scared of it so the rest of my family rode it while i sat with my mom. I did actually wind up returning to KD by chance later in the 2018 season, and i got a hat for volcano, which i wore like all day today lol. Sucks to see this coaster go, but like the park said, it was gonna be too much for them to handle, and i think that is a very good decision on their part. And Taylor, great job on the video, made a me a good bit emotional over here. I guess out of all of this, we can hope for a good Defunctland episode if anything, and maybe, just maybe something even better to replace it. RIP Volcano, the best inverted coaster ever built (in my opinion... gotta stick that there lol)

Definitely agree with this. KD now lacks an inverted coaster, and something similar to Banshee would fit really well in Kings Dominion's lineup. They also need another B&M, and while a new invert probably wouldn't be as good as Volcano, it would still be really good.

I made it to Kings Dominion for the first time in June of 2017. My friend and I (we're from Cincinnati) met a guy who was by himself (also from Cincinnati). We have been friends ever since. We did get to ride Volcano four or five times during our first visit there along with the other roller coasters. Kings Dominion really made a great first impression with the ride collection, the southern charm, and the trees (I still refer to KD as the Tree Park) and we couldn't wait to return someday. At long last, my friend and I just made it back to Kings Dominion in April of 2022. This time, my friend brought along his brother and he really enjoyed KD as well. We all mentioned Volcano from time to time as we finally revisited the other roller coasters... AND we finally got to ride Twisted Timbers! When I think back on Volcano, it is also one of my favorite defunct roller coasters. Truly a great ride with the launch and the theming, everything. I am sad that Volcano is gone, but... I can hear Volcano's spirit telling us "Ride on, ride on. Remember me and keep riding on". To that, I will continue to ride on at my favorite parks and one day (hopefully sooner than later) again at Kings Dominion.

I rode Volcano for the first time during my Spring Break of 2016. This was my first time going to Kings Dominion, and my main focus was clearly on Intimidator 305. I hadn't expected much out of Volcano, as I haven't really heard of the ride that much. We loved it so much that we rode both Volcano and Intimidator 5 times each. We had gotten a kick out of Volcano. The way the train flung you around that first turn; you could feel the acceleration in each launch as the forces put you back in your seat. Everything was so disoriented once you came out of the top, you didn't know which direction you were going. The way you slowly crept through those heartline rolls is something I will never forget. The feeling of slowly floating up out of your seat and then being flung the other direction to go into the next roll. Especially in the front row, being able to see the heart lining on each roll as you approached it is a one of a kind experience. Then, once the ride ended, the yells, screams, and cheers of the people in the train echoed throughout the Volcano. In the midst of all the noise and shaking and rattling that just occurred, everything went silent. My friend and I were fortunate enough to go to Kings Dominion over spring break two years later. He's from Georgia and I got to take him on it for his first ride. We both loved it. In fact, he probably liked it a lot more than I did. This was on March 31st of 2018. The next day, we were able to get back on for a couple more rides; little did we know these would be our last rides. This was April 1, highly conceived to be Volcano's last full day of operation ever. Finding out this news yesterday, along with the fact that we were among the last groups of people to ever ride Volcano is flat out heartbreaking. Always sad to see these rides go out like this; no warning, no last rides ceremony, nothing. I am still profoundly grateful for my experiences on Volcano, and it will go down as a legend in roller coaster history. Side note: people need to stop spamming Kings Dominion to bring the ride back. This harder for some people more than others but we have to accept it. We have to see through the mist here, we can't look at this as a black and white decision. Be optimistic of what's to come. Volcano's successor, I assure you, will not disappoint.

Hey man, I have a pretty similar story as you. I used to visit Kings Dominion (home park) a couple times when I was younger, about 4-5 years old, back in the Paramount days. These trips would be me, my mom, my moms friend and her kid a year older than me. My moms friend loves roller coasters, so when it came time to ride the Volcano, my mom would take me and my friend to ride on the Scrambler a couple times while she waited in line. I remember looking up at how tall that mountain was and just waiting for the day I was big enough to ride it. Eventually, they moved to Florida, so our trips to KD stopped. Similar to you, I didn’t visit the park for about 5 years or so. My first time back was in 2010. My parents surprised me for my 10th birthday, waking me up, telling me I was getting to skip school and go down to KD. I was so excited to finally go back! That day I rode Grizzly, Hurler, Rebel Yell, Anaconda, then Intimidator 305, and then the Volcano. I couldn’t believe it was finally my turn to get a chance at the roller coaster that I looked up to so often. That feeling of joy when it first launches you, you go around the turn and just when you think you’re safe it launches you again and up out of the Volcano, man what an experience it was. When the ride ended, I looked to my dad next to me and we both had the biggest grins on our faces just laughing from how awesome it was. Sadly I don’t remember my last Volcano ride, but I’d say it was during Halloween Haunt 2017, and I bet I rode it a few times that day (we used our free fast passes from renewing our Season Pass). So yea, this ride will definitely leave a big hole in KD’s top coasters, hopefully they keep the mountain itself and find a new use for the space with something just as epic!

I remember riding Volcano the year I moved to Virginia, and in late 2013, I went on it, had a great ride, then felt really sick afterward and threw up in the ladies' room, which I normally never do, rollercoasters don't do that to me. Turned out I was expecting my daughter, and this year, she was tall enough for just one grown-up coaster, the Avalanche. We've been watching each visit, from the Avalanche's lift hill as the Volcano got torn down. Guests stop and watch, sometimes they leave cards by the fence. When my kid asked why everyone was sad, I explained that we all loved the Volcano, and we are sad that it is gone, and I am sad she won't get to ride it. She was sad, too, and we had a bit of a cry, and she asked if all rollercoasters die when they get old. (I don't think she understands that they're not conventionally alive, so, great, we get to have the death talk in a hecking amusement park.) So I had to explain that, well, not all of them, it depends on a lot of things. Some coasters that her great-grandma rode as a little girl are still around at Kennywood. Some coasters I liked as a little girl at Geauga Lake got torn down when I was in college, but one of them got shipped to Kings Dominion and is the Dominator now. It depends. So she decided she wasn't going to let anyone tear down the Avalanche. Or the Woodstock Express. So there. Also, she has since made quite a credible memorial to the Volcano out of clay and yellow pipe cleaners. You can tell what it's meant to be and everything, assuming you're a rollercoaster person from this part of the world and all.

One of my favorite memories ever on a roller coaster. Volcano had been closed all day. Right before we left the park, my sister and I went over to see if there was any action. We could see them testing some trains so we waited around to see if the attendant would start letting people through, he did. We rushed to the Fast Lane line and got in the front row line. We boarded the train and while the park attendant was strapping us in, he told us “You’re the only people on this train.” We asked the people waiting in the front car queue if this was true and it was. We couldn’t believe it. The last time I ever rode Volcano and my sister and I were the only people on the train. Fun ride, I’ll miss it.

I only rode Volcano once in my two times to Kings Dominion. I don't remember the row, but it was supposed to rain that day, so it was only about a 10 minute wait. I remember really enjoying the ride and how unique it was. The launches, the crazy first inversion, the barrel rolls, that last drop, and being in complete darkness on the brake run. Super cool ride. We only went because we were on a road trip and we had CF platinum passes. I convinced my dad to pop into the park for an hour or two, even though it would rain. We were able to ride Dominator, Avalanche, and Volcano before the rain started, and I rode I305 in the drizzle, which was pretty bad. I'm so glad I went to experience it, because Volcano was closed when I went back to KD for a full visit last fall. I'm really going to value my one lucky ride on Volcano now. I was there with my friend Gabe and we got in line for Volcano which had a 2 and a half hour line. After about 30 minutes Gabe chickened out and decided he didn’t want to ride but I stayed there because I was determined to ride it. I finally got on in the back row and we shot out of the volcano in the dark when all the lights on the rides were on. I’ve only ridden Volcano once. My home park is SFA so I normally go there. I went to KD on a high school senior trip (2014). I was with a group of close friends and we were hitting a lot of the rides-Dominator, Hurler (before it was Twisted Timbers), Racer 75, etc. This was during a period when I was more GP so I wasn’t familiar with the rides at the park. Our group came upon Volcano and knew that we had to ride it. We waited at least 2 hours to ride it but at least we stuck it out. The queue for Volcano had these little TVs and I think we all memorized the 4 or 5 segments they had. I remember it being smoother than some of the other rides I went on (no gray outs). Most of the group did not want to continue going on rides after that (because of the wait) but three of us decided to push on to Intimidator
