r/Prorevenge In today's episode, OP is a student studying archaeology down in Australia. She's tasked with performing a dig at an ancient burial site, and she gets two absolute doofuses as her dig partners. On the very first night of the dig, her two partners spend hours digging where they're not supposed to dig and then make a joke out of everything. Well, this must have gotten them cursed, because pretty soon their lives were completely ruined!

As an archaeology volunteer, I literally gasped when Rslash described what they'd done. It was really sad to lose all of that data. What OP didn't mention is that, out of context, the artifacts have basically no value.
@crescentmoon5859
@crescentmoon5859 3 года назад
Besides the value, they held back in in the time of the dead being buried but so much is lost to students who act like that on real fieldwork because no data is reliable, and the artifacts just being ruined or at least photo's of them can never be used and has turned from historical objects to old ruined trash which is awful.

I studied archaeology as a minor in school (only option we had) and I was so pissed by what they did. What the actual hell. Plus, archaeology is a destructive science. I don't understand people who don't do that... If you are rude to someone, the least you can do is just say "I'm sorry, I'm having a bad day. It's not your fault" or something. The same with callcenters and stuff. Even when I'm getting desperate about something, I keep repeating in my rant that "I know you didn't cause this and you probably can't fix it, but I just don't know what to do". Another note, archaeologist do work with animal remains. There’s zooarchaeology, a sub-division in environmental archaeology. I actually have a bachelors degree in archaeology. So, that story really got to me. Those jerks deserved everything that happened to them. Not only did they ruin any contextual information from the site (which is a large part of how archaeologists determine anything) that information can’t be reobtained. Not sure if anyone understands (or cares) why archaeology is such a slow process. The reason for all the photos and measurements is because of stratigraphy. Here is a basic overview of stratigraphy. Say you are digging through a whole in the ground. You can use the different types of soil etc to inform your did since different types of soil are laid in layers called strata. For example. At the dig site I worked at (I was fortunate enough to work on two different ones in college) there had been a forest fire in the area where the site was located 100 years ago. Therefore, once we got to a certain depth there would be a layer of charcoal we would have to dig through. Everything we found beneath the layer of charcoal we knew was there before the fire. Hope that makes sense.

As someone who majors in Anthropology and has done a few archaeology field schools, that last story really pissed me off. Archaeology is a slow, methodical profession for a reason, and them doing what they did would completely screw any data coming from that unit and makes the artifacts found significantly less useful.

Desecrating a gravesite is bad enough, but after getting caught, instead of showing shame and embarrassment in their actions, they instead got angry because they got caught, and decided to purposefully mess up more of the gravesite and wish sexual violence on their remaining team member? It honestly sounds like they're entitled kids, not an ounce of regret for what they did, only for getting caught, and going on to continue to be terrible because they think they'll somehow get away with it, or simply don't care if they're caught. Eventually they'll learn you won't always get bailed out by mommy and daddy and that you can't always have your way.

@Darwinsmom

As an undergrad I got to work as a labourer on a dig that was being undertaken where a new bridge was being constructed over a river. Since it was a salvage dig, it was being done in winter. The archaeologist in charge was interviewed by Jay Ingram for Discovery Channel, and she announced it was the first time a dig had been undertaken in winter south of the Arctic Circle. It was every bit as tedious as OP described, only we also had to thaw the ground using a framework of brood lights so we could open every pit. It was a little rough trying to keep warm once the brood lights were moved, but it was exciting. I found a clear quartzite thumbnail scraper in one of the batches of matrix I was screening - I was probably the first human to touch it in 6,000 to 12,000 years. If anyone had pulled an AH stunt like OP described, I doubt they could have run far enough or fast enough to get away - from our entire dig team!

Also, post production is a misleading thing. I can record myself throwing a basket ball behind me for it to land in the hoop and post it online and everyone will think it's cool. What they wont see are the 647 other recordings that I deleted when I was trying it. This applies to literally any post production. It can always be edited or rerecorded until it is satisfactory.

Every cryptographer knows that it goes: Alice Bob Charlie (Chuck if malicious) David Erin, or Eve(sdropper) Frank Grace/Garry (either works for the government) Heidi Ivan (Judge) Judy Mallory (if malicious), Mike(rophone) Oscar Rupert Trudy (intruder) Walter/Warden ... And that's all the people who ever use the internet! But mostly, it's just Alice and Bob. 😜 Serious question, though, isn't it common slang to use "-azza" in Australia, as a way of shortening a name to make a pet name, or nickname? Sort of how "-ie" works for names in America (i.e. Elizabeth -> Lizzie, Carolyn -> Carrie, Frank -> Frankie). In Australia, Sharon becomes Shazza, Darren becomes Dazza, etc. Hopefully some Aussie can correct me, if I'm wrong on that. 😃

I'm not an archeologist, but I'm a bit of an archology enthusiast. What these guys did makes me wonder how this matt guy did not literally strangle them to death on the spot. I just hope this site was not an important one, because who knows what historical evidence they destroyed. For those of you who don't know, this is so serious that they will leave parts of dig sites unstudied for future generations to uncover with better methods and technology in hopes of discoveries that would not be possible at the time. These areas are often kept secret or guarded from looters.

First One: What kind of mayor or city government do they have? One full of Karens and Kevins? How did they cave to his demands that quickly when they could’ve proven all those claims were false. Second One: This one made my blood boil because they pretty much destroyed history with that stunt. They should’ve gotten jail time at least for trespassing, but what happened was actually much better.

If it's "ancient" in Australia chances are it's Aboriginal - have white people ben there long enough to leave "ancient" graves? In which case it's a double desecration: one for the graves themselves and one for the cultural heritage that was destroyed.

My SIL is a geologist (we’re Canadian) and worked on these sites for months at a time in the very North of Canada, she ran a dig in Australia, and also in Cambodia (about 10 + years ago now), where they ended up finding a mass grave from when Pol Pot was the genocidal maniac running the country. As soon as they found this, the dig had to stop immediately and contact authorities and were to leave everything as is. The dig was put on hold, but some junior geologists decided to go back there that night to steal human remains to sell on websites for “a piece of history”. My SIL was so enraged at this, because she could be held accountable for disturbing a historical grave site, as she was dig leader/coordinator. When she came across these two idiots selling remains on line (a felony), she first contacted the authorities in Cambodia, then the websites to take down the items and as they were junior and still in last year of their master’s program, to the dean of the Uni they attended (who booted the two guys out very quickly - as they didn’t want the school’s name associated with this. They were arrested by the Cambodian authorities and sentenced to five years for desecration of human remains and desecration of a nationally protected site, felony theft and selling human remains for profit (Cambodian prison is nothing like N. American ones). My sister in law always recorded the sites by video from multiple angles and streams it to the firms companies chief information/research officer in live time (all knew this as in their contracts with the company can view over to ensure of proper methods of their digs, as she can have a documented account, there’s also signs saying of this up on site as well, and it records at times no one was digging and off site for security. They were allowed to remove all their tools, but asked for her to keep recording until they could put up their own Cameras. Well, all the things stole were captured on video, which showed them talking about how much they’ll get in profits and the actual theft, which sealed their fates! My SIL knew Canada had same sentencing guidelines. After two years asking for extradition back to Canada, they still had to do their time in our federal prison. They had to pay a fine that added up to $100,000.00. Needless to say, they were blacklisted from the industry. Because of my SIL being able to ID them and had to testify in Cambodia and in Canada (at least their prison was only a couple hour drive away, but she got threats from the guys’ family and friends, and when she got married, her husband as well, and once she was starting to get threats warning her to be careful and to to kill herself. She documented everything including threats to her family on Twitter and Facebook. She removed/deactivated most of her social media, changed her last name to her husband’s, got a new number and moved to a newer part of the city, while pressing charges on her harassers who also got put on probation and a 10 year long RO, which one broke, which meant he spent as much time left on probation (eight years) in prison. She decided to work in the research area of her job, before getting married and pregnant, and data interpretation and logging. While on her paid maternity leave (1 year), she finished an business accounting degree. My nephew is now two. She did this for most of Covid for a couple of smaller companies locally, and now some friends of hers she worked on digs with opened up their own firm, offered her the CI/RO position and have a few bids, so she’s been ZOOM meetings/interviews. One person to apply was one of the arrested guys, my SIL replied in the email from her bosses email that the posting indicated federal background checks and he rescinded his application upon that email!
