I lost it at the part where the superintendent decided to "crack down" on snow days as if SHE controls the weather. That infallible logic...

The fence story made me smile listening to it, knowing exactly where it is heading. You don't get to 'sue for everything' but so many people think a minor accident always means big payoff!

This sounds like the last super attendant my school district had when I was just starting middle school. She even lied to the school board about road conditions when the state said it wasn't safe for buses to be driving. her policy was pretty much if you're not dead you're going to school. It was so bad that one day my mother said "You and your sisters aren't getting on that bus I'm calling the school and telling them you're sick"

The last school I worked at also refused to close when the *government* ordered all public schools (we're private) to close due to bad weather. A tree fell during *lunch break* on the field where students were playing as a direct result of the bad weather. There was no such drama afterwards though. They just cancelled school (but still asked all the teachers to go back) the next day even though the weather was already fine

The story with the snow storm reminded me of when I was in grade school/highschool in the winter and would listen to the radio to see if schools closed for the day. Every day in winter was a possible snow day, it was awesome. PS I love winter

13:26 As a high-school student in a backwater town in a big county in Southern Ontario, yah, road get crazy out here real fast Also as a daughter of a bus driver, if they say it isn’t safe. IT ISNT SAFE!!! My mom has driven in foggy, ice-stained roads before and almost went straight into a ditch bc of road conditions!!! Edit: one time when I was in grade 4 (I was 10) there was a HUGE windstorm (almost like the one in the story, except the fact that the schools and roads didn’t shut down as the storm was announced well after school started) and once I got of the bus, I was nearly knocked over by the shear force of the wind! Thankfully my older sister was behind me and kept me up. We ended up spending that night in my next-door neighbour’s basement (our family’s were friends) bc I didn’t even feel safe in my own home (trees aligned the separation of my family’s house my other neighbour’s driveway, barely even a meter from the house and I was scared one was gonna crash through the roof) The power was also out to we had no heating, which was another reason we stayed there, we brought some firewood and we all sat by the in-home fireplace and had played some cars games to pass the time while we got tired Good thing it was a Friday and it was over by morning

Get well soon! I live in the MidWest also, and our previous school superintendent was an avid golfer. He made darn sure that the school year was padded with extra snow days so his Spring would not be interfered with. Yeah, he would try to avoid calling snow days if they weren't necessary, but he was always reasonable.

If my child was in that bus, I would sue her at civil court.

Being an ex-school bus driver. I can say that any bus that gets sent out into a snow storm in Canada, can be refused by the bus driver to drive in those conditions based on Occupational Health & Safety standards and cannot be fired/written up for it

It is so immensely satisfying to be the good guy who succeeds a power trippy superior. I replaced a manager who was widely considered a prick, even by the customers, and he was ultimately fired after a huge incident(another juicy story lol). I was looking for training and was hired by the company as they can pay me less and I had connections. When I came on, the people looked at me with fear at first, even though they were much much older than me. But I was a newbie in this industry, so I regularly asked for help and feedback. Our HR department was super cool and helped me bond with my department. I learned a lot of things from those below my position, and eventually, they trusted me and actively challenged my decisions and policies(which I encouraged). Now we are super close, and even though there are tough times, my team always got my back.

Being fairly decent at financial management I have often found ways to buy any local homes that go on the market, fix up any issues and rent them out. I now have 8 houses and all my neighbors are hand selected by me.

As a school bus driver I can tell that in my school district that kind of snow day bs would last exactly one day or a bad snow storm, cause our drivers would just all collectively call in saying they can't safely make it to the lot. Not sure how big the transportation depot was in that last story but you try to fill over 100 bus routes with 15 conflict drivers and see how long it takes to get kids to school :P

I had something similar happened when I wore has a special needs teacher in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. We had a new superintendent from upper New York State. She was surprised we still had dirt roads! One day, she was at a conference for state principals five hours south of our school. Bad weather rolled in. She had the final authority on delays/closures. The school board begged her the night before to call it a snow day. After much prodding she reluctantly called a two hour delay. The weather got worse. I walked into the school just when the announcement came that we were closing two hours early. Two hour delay + two hour early dismissal = the kids at school for less than 4 hours. The line of furious parents waiting to speak to the superintendent was something of legend.

A similar snow day thing happened at my high school once. This was in Oregon year 2016. It was predicted to be a very nasty snowstorm, but my high school refused to cancel. About halfway through the day (about 1 pm when school lets out at around 3), announcements came on and parents were called so that kids can start leaving early. This was good for locals who lived within 10-30 mins of school and kids who had their own cars and licenses, but not for people who didn't have any of that. At the end of the day, only 1/3rd of the high schoolers were still there and I was among them. The nasty storm blew in. Snow and ice covered everything, including roads. Made commute far more dangerous The remaining 1/3rd population was slowly trickling out as their parents came to get them. At around 6-7 pm, all remaining students were moved into one building and we all fit into one room. So it was a mix of students ranging from kindergarteners to 12th-graders milling around. My dad picked me up at around 8 pm. Took 3 hours to get home, and there were still other kids waiting for their parents at school. Roads were snowy and there were cars littering the sides of hilly roads. Thankfully, my dad knows how to drive in snow and ice (used to live in Montana and he loves skiing) and had properly prepared the car for this weather. In the years that followed, if there was even a hint of snow, the school cancelled classes.

That super intendant is very similar to the principals at certain schools here. I have friends and family who are teachers. One principal stole all the money from the student funds to buy decor, rebuild the street sign, and build a fence specifically around teacher parking to control when they could come/go and would lock it regularly. She had the only code/key. She made all these rules that were illegal as they werent covered in contract. Shed refuse to pay the extra required. Demand extra free work, time, donations, etc. Id go into details but its years of just horrible act after act. What finally did it was a school fight. Normally you wait for security, as procedure, and to protect teachers. She didnt, dragged a kid off into the nurses office, pushed him over a chair, dragged him back up and choke slammed him against the wall and held him there. Another male teacher (retired military/cop), came in, and talked her down. It was like a hostage situation. Everyone was scared she was gonna hurt him, she was insane. She hadnt seen the nurse inside, or the other teacher/student being helped. They saw the whole thing. Kid reported it to mom, cameras verified, witnesses verified. The district kept it hush-hush, transferred her out to another school, and then shortly after she "retired". She always told everyone "I have enough money to live til I die and never work, but I do this out of CHARITY". She did it for the power trip. She literally had no qualifications for the position. All she did was come in, blow all the money, piss off all the staff, make teachers leave in droves, hired her own family for all the secretaries/new hire teachers, and then leave. What a waste.

He attempted to turn back the tide but at least in that case he was trying to prove the impossibility of the act rather than thinking he could DEMAND that a natural force stop doing what it does.
