The labor laws story reminds me of my old job. They tried to list all their employees as "salary exempt", which meant that they did not have to pay overtime. The thing is, they actually didn't pay employees enough to be considered exempt. They tried using the commissions we got as part of the salary, but they actually were considered a "bonus" on our paychecks. So in reality, they were only paying us minimum wage. On top of that, they usually understaffed most stores so we usually had to work 6 days a week, with 10 hour shifts. My record was a worked a YEAR straight open to close. The only days off I got was the major holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc..). Someone finally put 2 and 2 together and blew the whistle on them. They had to pay EVERYONE who was working, or had recently worked, for the company 2 years of back OT pay. I remember sitting in that meeting when they handed out the checks. The owner said "You may be tempted to smile or be happy about these checks, but this is NOT A HAPPY DAY". I looked at my check and it was a little over $30k!!! I was pretty damn happy about that. Some employees who drank heavily from the corporate kool-aid actually offered to sign the checks back over to the company. One guy said "You have treated us so well, I would love to give this back to you.".. WTF? If they treated us well, then they would have paid us correctly. From what I understand, the company had to take out a huge loan to do this, and they were never able to dig out. They ended up closing a year later. Banks came in without warning and shut the stores down. I ended up at a tech company, where my starting salary was way more than I was making after 10 years with the other company. So to whoever blew the whistle with that company, THANK YOU!

When I was first starting out, I learned the hard way about taxes. I screwed up and ended up owing the IRS about $200.00. This was in the 80s and I freaked out! I paid off my debt and went on with my life. However, because of that, I am extremely meticulous in showing the younger generations everything I know about the forms, how to fill them out, and anything I can think of before they actually have to start doing so. The other thing I make sure they know is everything regarding the different types of interest rates and how they work. Yes, all of this is very boring stuff but I love that a lot of these young folks are now financially stable adults teaching their kids the same things.

I love that the OP in the first story made their computer wallpaper and phone ringtone of Muttley. If you're Gen X and you've ever watch any of the Hanna Barbera cartoons he was on back in the day then you remember that laugh.

A really important thing to remember is Karen's don't actually care enough about you or anyone else to actually mean the mean, horrible shit they say. People who only care about themselves and don't actually know you (or even care to try and know you) are not worth you caring how they feel about you. They don't know you. They don't want to try and are not worth your mindspace. Watch them because they will screw with you if they can but just assume they will make up random awful things to hurt you and get their way. It's not actually about you so much as them.

If I found out my boss was committing tax fraud, I'd report him and not for the finder's fee. I'd take it, of course. But that's not the reason why I'd report him. I pay my taxes, he should pay his. I don't mind paying taxes. Freedom isn't free. But everyone else needs to pay their share.

When I started my own business years ago I contacted a local newspaper to run advertisements in. Long story short they divulged my ad to a competitor that had never run ads with them. They even placed there ad right across from mine. When I contacted the newspaper to complain they said “it’s just business”, so needless to say I no longer advertised with them, and since I wasn’t advertising the competitor didn’t either. For the next five years I told every other small business owner what they had do to me. After five years of this the newspaper called me and begged me to stop telling everyone what they’d done. I responded with “it’s just business “. Within six months of that phone conversation they went out of business cause no one would buy advertising with them which we all know is the life blood of any new media. The lesson here? Don’t fuck with an ethics major!

I'm the workplace rights guy. I'm not legally empowered in any capacity, but I make sure that all new people know their rights. And when a manager(we have two that are troublesome) tries to overstep? I make sure as hell they know what they are doing, make sure the employees involved know what is going on, and then remind them I have the relevant government agency phone numbers in my phone. Those two managers hate me, but it's worth it.

I gotta post this cuz I got no one to tell. My dad works as a demolition guy, and he helps this big corporate in doing so. But today, they were going to demolish a old t mobile. And note that this place went out of business two weeks ago. So, they were about to do it but then they found this storage with a whole bunch of things like iPhones, car chargers, and a whole bunch of other things they’ll sell. My dad was one of the last ones to choose, since he was recently hired, but we still got a lot of good things. Like around 50-60 car chargers which each cost around $20-$30 and iPad cases for a bunch of different iPads which cost around $30. But the big haul ? Two Nokia phones. But all in all, pretty cool !

5% pick up rate out of 40 calls so she only answered two calls. Who does that? She might be talking to friends or just chatting away to avoid other calls. You can deduct pay for a break depending on how long it is and going out every 15 minutes depending on how long the person works they might be working less time and spend more time on break I think deducting pay would be smart. Cuz she is taking longer than an hour and a half break longer than I believe 15 minutes you can't get paid for the breaks. When I smoke I go out every couple of hours and it takes me 8 minutes to finish smoking a cigarette. If she spends longer than 15 minutes on one cigarettes or something also going out every 15 minutes and you keep telling her not to do that and she can't do that then fire her.

Regarding the final tip. Sure, if you're leaving the company you may as well report your boss. However, if you are currently working there, I don't think the money you get would be worth potentially losing your job.

Funny thing about the last story, the owners literally could have just claimed the maintenance for the provided cars as a business expense on their taxes instead of illegally withholding tips. 🤦

I wish the CRA (basically the Canadian version of the IRS) gave a cut of assets seized to the people who tip them off. It sucks that they don't. They're all like jUsTiCe Is ItS oWn ReWaRd.
