I read one of those “pregnant lady worried about drowning her baby” things before, while I did laugh a lot at first, it ended up making me so sad to think that not only she hadn’t received any decent sex education, but that woman had not even one person in her life to explain to her that it couldn’t happen! No doctor, no mother, sister, friend, colleague or concerned neighbor could tell her, or make that woman feel like she could ask them! Now I just feel depressed whenever I think about it…

In times of cholera and the bubonic plague, ships had to stay in the harbour for a while to ensure they weren't carrying diseases before the crew was allowed off the ship. Makes sense, right? Fun fact: Lactose Intolerance is a condition that 60% of people suffer(?) from. The reason being that our body stops producing Lactase, the chemical needed to break down Lactose, once we reach a certain age. We were not meant to consume dairy products our entire lives. The condition Lactase Persistence, which allows the body to keep producing lactase, is heavily prevalent in many countries where dairy is a staple in cuisine. Thank you Brew
@derekstein6193
@derekstein6193 2 года назад
I believe the number is roughly 63% that are Lactose Intolerant, but that is based on data that is about a decade old, if I recall correctly. Lactase is actually an enzyme; calling it a chemical appears to misrepresent it as an inorganic compound instead of an organic one. The genetic mutation that allows for Lactase Persistence is believed to have originated in Scandinavia, most likely as an alternate milk source for infants and an extra food reserve in hard times. Eventually the population evolved a genetic mutation to keep producing Lactase long after infancy, instead of its normal cessation around the toddler stage of development. Lactose Intolerance is not the only dietary evolution cause by a localized genetic mutation. For instance, the majority of japanese citizens have a genetic mutation that allows them to break down particular chemical bonds in native seaweed (nori) that other humans cannot. This lets their bodies access various vitamins and minerals that other humans' bodies would just excrete along with fecal matter. Thank you for coming to my TED-Talk.
@a_d3mon
@a_d3mon 2 года назад
@@derekstein6193 All enzymes are chemicals, but not all chemicals are enzymes. If someone doesn't understand the difference they should go back to elementary/grade school... But yes that's a very valid point and I was not aware of where the mutation originated, just that it existed. Brew didn't go into a huge amount of depth as to the origins, just explained part of the reasons as to its existence and why it's significant regarding lactose intolerance... I should've put "about 60%" as that leaves more leeway than a blanket "60%"
@johnscaramis2515
@johnscaramis2515 2 года назад
Our body does not stop producing Lactase at a certain age by default. Sometimes it's a simple optimisation process: if you stop drinking milk, producing an enzyme to process milk is a waste of energy for the body. He simple stops producing it. On the other hand milk is a good source of energy, so as long as it is available, the body will use it and will not stop the production of lactase. H8wever that does not mean that happens with all people, causes for lactose intolerance vary.

The animal highway crossing things are actually quite common in parts of Canada, specifically intended for moose (since they tend to cause HORRIFIC accidents, one study estimated 13x more likely to be fatal to the driver than crashes with deer). But they had an issue that the wolves figured out to just wait at the crossing points and ambush the moose when they tried to cross. Also the water/words thing is pretty common, a japanese author named Masaru Emoto published a bunch of books and "studies" on it in the late 90s, and it's been floating through the alt health/new age movements ever since

23:10 fun fact. Humans are the only species (iirc) whose adult members can digest lactose (a phenomenon called "lactase persistence"), let alone drink milk from other species. Most mammals are lactose intolerant (ie don't have the enzyme that helps digest lactose) after infancy, there's simply no reason for the body to continue producing the enzyme that helps digest lactose. "Lactase persistence" (ie the opposite of lactose intolerance in adults) even in humans is a relatively recent thing. So really, in the sense, we few humans who can drink milk as adults are the weird ones

Just a little side note. People in the time period of Jesus still got old. The average lifespan of people from that time is just so low because of the high child mortality rates. And thats not even mentioning Flat-Earth-Debunk-Channels, which is a whole Thing by now. Sci Man Dan and Professor Dave always make me smile just like The Click.

As a software dev, it's literally impossible to build in anti-bias protections into AI, at least at this point in time, because bias doesn't follow strict logic you can build into an algorithm. And you can't build morals into an AI either for the same reason. So, training neural networks with more diverse data samples and hoping that bigotry gets drowned in the sheer volume of other variants is the only thing we can do really.
@Ninjacatmuffin
@Ninjacatmuffin 2 года назад
I'm commenting to second this. All the AI knows is how to follow data based on patterns and other things that it sees. You can't really program "morals" or anything into it because there's not a strict logic to it, as you mentioned

This time, I'll be the "aCtuAlLy" guy! People back in the days, people got much older than 30-40. It is a common misconception, which is supported by statistics, but read wrong. The average includes child death, and since it was a very common way to die the average age gets dragged down.

So children are not people. Got it!

@@normangray7869 I think they meant the newborn kids. Back in days, babies were dying very easily cuz they didn't get proper care, but if they survived a week it was way more likely that they will live, and if they lived like 6 years it was very likely that they'll get to be old. But many babies died just after the birth, and now medicine is more advanced that even if a baby is suspected to have many diseases or be missing some body parts, or even to be born dead, professionalists can get them to survive. Like; if there were 5 babies in a family back then, 3 of them would die in a week after birth (due to babies being so delicate), and two would survive to 60 years at least that's what I think

@@klem1182 it was going ok, but if you are "born DEAD" how the doctor can make you survive if you are already dead?
@rojalD

@@Ahonya666 if it's too late, you gotta call a spade a spade, but there are ways for modern medicine, to prevent many causes of still birth. Of cause there are still cases, but reduced greatly. A big factor, for scientist to grade a country's development is by looking at child deaths. The higher a country is developed, the lower the rate.

The water experiments where posotive and negative energy affect the water was done by Masaru Emoto. The thing is they weren't wrong, the positive water was way different from the negative water. The little detail they didn't mention was that the water didn't come from the same source and was clearly completely different to begin with, they wanted to prove a point so much they never even bothered with a control or repeatable and controllable experiments. The positive water came from clean drinking water, and the negative water came from a dirty creek. So basically all they proved was that dirty water was dirty. There are images everywhere of the different emotions affect on water crystals, but they are either just different shapes, or the negative emotions which came from "negative" water. As in already dirty water. And then published books and talked about everywhere someone would allow him to present his "research."

What I can say about the ladder scene is: the way the guy in the video did it was still safer than stepping onto the ladder. Even when folded, the ladder still was missing the dude's whole height, if he wasn't lifting that up. I had a security schooling for workplaces, and the person there said that you should always stand at least on the 3rd step from upwards on the ladder, in order to have a secure step on the ladder. So it's better to look stupid, and get the rag down using the ladder as a stick, than stepping all the way up onto the ladder, and risk loosing your balance.
