do not do this if they didn't lie to you but honestly insulting their "size" or skills or make up some weird shit they did will immediately make them stop. if you dont want to "admit" that you had sex then tell people that they asked for sex and when you said no they freaked out like an incel or something. the desire to look good in front of others will immediately crush their attempts. never underestimate the power of public image or social convention!

Oh goodness, those "but she's your mother" stories are so infuriating. My mom guilt-tripped my dad (a kind, gentle man) into keep in touch and visiting his abusive father until he died. Her excuse of course was, "he's still your father". I was a child myself so I didn't understand the situation, unfortunately. I was 8 when the abusive grandfather died. I will never forgive my mom for that. No one is obligated to keep in touch with an abusive person, not ever. Doesn't matter who that abusive person is!

Yep, my parents tried to guilt me into having a relationship with my father's mother. Nope, not happening. Obviously she didn't know I'm trans, but she thought "there should be open season on [those people]" (the [ ] is definitely against TOS, use your imagination, make it 5x worse and you've got the basic idea, and yes, open season mean's exactly what it sounds like). Apparently I "wasn't allowed to be mad because she doesn't know". Uh, even if I wasn't trans, I don't think you need to be part of a group to understand why genociding them is bad. I didn't go to her funeral and they still won't let that go.

The obligation to make amends should never be on the victim of abuse. No matter how much remaining family pressure you, never let them dictate how you live your life and whether or not you have contact. If they "but she's your mother" you, hit them with "and I was her child, and look what she did to me", or whatever the equivalents are for your situation.

I was in university taking anatomy and physiology classes. My niece was just two years old. She loved when I practiced my anatomy memorization with her. She knew several body parts, such as sternum. One day I took her to the store with me. I was looking for a specific product when my niece looked at the customer next to me, threw out her her arm, pointed at the lady, and loudly said Gluteus Maximus! The woman was stunned and I was nearly on the floor laughing. Niece waited to be praised for her correct identification. When the lady didn't praise her, she tried again. Nothing. frustrated, niece yells "BUTT!" and grins while awaiting her praise. I finally gathered myself enough to explain to the poor lady.

In med school, some of my classmates had kids that were included when practicing anatomy, naturally. One day between classes, one of them told us about how the day care teachers thought it odd when their child scratched their knee and said "my patella is hurt!" The 'end it' one with the fake scars reminds me of something I saw on tumblr once - this one person was CONSTANTLY being sent kys type messages, and having lost all patience with putting up with it one day, the person responded to whatever latest message with something short and sweet, I think it was something like 'you win'. Now, iirc, this person had no intention of LISTENING, just logging out and STAYING gone for a while to decompress from the constant harassment. And when they finally came back, they had a BEVVY of messages, starting with the usual 'kys lol' type messages, devolving into this anonymous person BEGGING and PLEADING with them to respond or post or SOMETHING because they couldn't handle knowing they might be the reason a person killed themselves. This caused the person to take ALL those sent asks, pile them up in a public post as images, and scream at them why on earth they'd so stubbornly and persistently demand somebody kill themselves, and indeed why say that at ALL, if they 'couldn't handle being the reason somebody killed themselves', which since then has led me to believe that the vast majority probably genuinely don't think anyone ever WOULD be bothered by that kind of bullying - that these people think 'kill yourself' has the same level of severity or weight as something like 'you're ugly' or 'I hate you'. But yeah. Shockingly, some people genuinely don't think KYS type bullying has any potential to actually cause the victim to... well. Off themselves, and are shocked when something ACTUALLY seems to happen.

On the "racist" story: Long ago (like over 50 yrs) I had a picture of my mom where the lighting was really awful and it looked like she was a light skinned black woman... She had black hair and dark brown eyes. Back then, racist remarks were common, especially in the work place. Whenever someone would make such a remark to me, I would casually say, "Don't you know that my mom is black"? They, of course, didn't believe it since I am whiter than white. But when I would show my mom's pic, they would get quiet, give me a lackluster apology, and slink off. I never told my mom because she was racist too and would have had a heart attack just imagining that someone thought she was black! I wish I still had that picture!

My moment of "traumatize them back" was when my mom called me over and over again to scream at me for being a traitor. Apparently I had betrayed her by being close with my dad when she abused me the majority of my life. She wouldn't stop yelling and crying and screaming about how awful I was and how my dad had brainwashed me (apparently being a good parent is brainwashing in her eyes) and after a while I just lost it on her. I recounted every instance of her degrading me. Every instance of her calling me names, hitting me, starving me, convincing me that I was obese (I was almost 20 pounds underweight) throwing me, overworking me then shaming me for not being perfect. I told her I wanted nothing to do with her anymore and to lose my number, and now she hardly reaches out because she knows I won't put up with her bullshit anymore. I like to imagine she's afraid to call me to ask for favors the same way she made me afraid to ask for basic human needs.

38:24 The whole "Blood is thicker than water" doesn't mean what most people think it does. The full saying is "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." The actual meaning is the bonds you choose are thicker than the bonds formed by the happenstance of birth.

I've seen this claim over and over, but never seen any proof. Where is this from? And if it's not true, why are you repeating it? You don't need to "disprove" an aphorism to rob it of rhetorical weight. If someone claims that "blood is thicker than water", all you have to say is "so what?". What does the consistency of blood have to do with interpersonal relationships? Just because a phrase is short and snappy does not make it true.

My mother is weird. She's a decently kind person who raised me and my brother after divorcing from my father and worked her ass off to provide for us. But after school, when me and my brother started earning our own money, she started demanding rent. "Okay, fair..." Then she started going on spending sprees, and needed financial help with important bills "Okay..." Then she would start lying about it "..." and then the amounts kept increasing... Then my father died, and the FIRST THING she asked was if I had his social security numbers so she could make a claim on widows insurance (she was already divorced for like 2 decades at this point) eventually, when I was asked to provide for HER MOTHER'S assisted living bills, bills that stretch into several THOUSAND dollars, casually asking "Well, maybe you still have grandpas inheritance lying around?", I lost my mind. She would always remind me and my brother about how "family means more than money" and so eventually I asked her "If money is so unimportant, why the fuck do you only reach out when you need some? Huh? Can you not live by yourself? You're a grown ass, early-retired single woman, who theoretically shouldn't have many expenses in her life, yet your bad financial situation is the fault of my brother not buying the right house so you could move in with him, and me not giving you 120% of my own paycheck every month? THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM?" I blocked her number, blocked her on social media, and haven't spoken to her in months, including missing her birthday, missing christmas and new years, and my birthday. She constantly makes bad financial decisions and I am NOT responsible for bailing her out of them.

The story about the little girl who got incredibly spoiled and entitled because she only has one eye made me pretty irked. I’m blind in one eye, have been since I was a few months old, and I can do ALL the things those people were saying she can’t. Sure, if you throw a ball at me I’m likely to get it in the face because I have no depth perception and I’m also incredibly clumsy for the same reason, but it’s not been a barrier to me doing things for myself in general. People like that give others with disabilities a bad name. My brother did used to call me Cyclops, though. So that bit made me laugh. 😂

I really love these "traumatised a bully back" stories. I had my own bullies at school, at one point it has been so bad that i cutted myself in class. After one amok incident in another part of Germany happened we got a therapist at our school and guess who was the first one sent to him..and it was the best that could happen to me, he was the only person at my school that never treated me like the problem and clearly coud see that the bullies were the ones that needed to be looked at. Saved the rest of my self esteem and basically helped me to fight them back. One year after the kid in Erfurt went amok we had a "prevention and memorial" class and i was fed up. The therapist made sure that i was the one that held the summary and oh boy it was beautiful 😄 I stood in front of 4 school classes, a handful parents, teachers, the group of police staff that held the prevention classes and the school director. Therapist right behind me. I had the opportunity to tell everything that happened to me, packed like it were just examples and not my own story. Like f.e. getting spit on, pushed down stairs, been called satanist for wearing black and been mocked for my choice of style (goth/metal look, this music saved my life and i till today want to show that i am different than 'normal' people), getting thrown at with sport items in class, humiliation, the one time a kid tried to burn my hair in class (i am ginger and he said smth about burning the witch..) and so on. I could see that everyone tried to look away or realised that i told my own story. The parents went pale, were shocked and some clearly had a "you are in trouble son" look in their eyes. The teachers looked really uncomfortable. The director looked angrier from minute to minute. It was so wholesome for me to see, but i struggled not to cry. The therapist positioned himself so i could look at his face and smiled, motivated me to go on. I closed with "if we were in the US and not in a country with strict gun laws, you all could have seen different consequences for your actions. Remember Columbine. Remember Erfurt. Ask yourself not "how did this happen", ask yourself "what made a person do something so extreme". I really hope that at least one of you uses their brain only once and consider that every action has a reaction. I wish, from the dept of my heart, that each one of you that becomes a parent at least tries to make a better job than the parents of bullies and shooters. And I "pray" that every kid you someday may have, will get the same type of "friendly, good and supporting" classmates like i had. I said everything with the biggest fake smile i could come up with. I know it was heavy but it worked. And it was such a relief for me. That room full of white faces, shame and the silence from the parents were so satisfying. I really loved the police staff, all of them went from shock at first to smiling at me and hand clapping. The aftermath was pure satisfaction. The director punished my classmates with extra classes after regular school ended and cleaning work in classrooms and outside. All teachers that never did anything were punished too. The sport teacher in particular was fired bc took part in bullying instead of helping. I was kind of untouchable for the rest of the time till graduation. In the school after that i had a boyfriend that was bigger than the other kids and metal musician with that "bad guy" look. Not one of them ever tried to do bully me again. I had enough self esteem to stand up for others they made fun of and everytime they tried to befriend me or said nice things just to look good in front of others, i responded with sarcasm and remembered them that they were shitty persons. It helped me a lot to overcome. I am scarred, still in therapy 17 years after school and my psyche is unstable, but this one person that helped me and listened laid the foundation of the confident person i am now. I work with troubled teens and my own trauma is a good connection to them. They usually trust me enough to speak up so i can help them survive their own ordeals and get stronger mentally. That was way more than i first wanted to write 😅🙈 But i think stories like mine needed to be shared, i see and hear so many things that are tragic, unnecessary and preventable. With social media and cameras in phones it has reached a different level nowadays. Parents, please teach your kids to be responsable adults that care for others. Empathy is something that should be valued more in all societies. Don't look away if someone is bullied. Sometimes one friendly word or one person that stands beside the "victim" can change their whole world.

I actually got pregnant at 17 from my youth pastor's brother. He is 7 years older than me. I announced that I was pregnant to some members of the congregation. One Sunday after morning service, my pastor followed me to the parking lot and told me to "stop lying about a man of god", amongst other incredibly insulting things. I was shunned by everyone. When my child was born, I got a DNA test, but definitely no apology from anyone there. I quit going to church after my child was a few months old. Even if they say they don't have the key anymore, better to change it and be certain. I'm sooo glad someone was willing to help OP get the cat back. I begged my dad to change the locks on our house after breaking up with my ex, not because I thought he was gonna steal my pets (though I would've been so upset if he stole any of my cats) and I knew we had motion cameras, but because during the breakup he threatened to end himself and when he got out of the psych ward (I called the police and they held him for 72 hours) I was afraid he might show up with a weapon since he liked to collect knives. His mom died from breast cancer when he was 2 years old (we where probably about 10ish at the time) but he would constantly use her as an excuse to start fights and bully other kids. He told my friend (who's parents had just divorced) that she was the reason they split up because they didn't want her. She started bawling her eyes out so I turned to him and told him "your mom is probably glad she's dead so she doesn't have to see how ugly you turned out". He tried to challenge me to a fight after class but he backed down when realised he would look pretty stupid fighting a girl half his size in front of the entire class.

i know this probably isn't the full story, but i also had to work for everything i got and my parents never bought me anything but still love my parents because they allowed me to help myself. the reason they're real shitstains is the fact that they didn't let anyone help her and weren't there for her, and it's not fair that she was the only one of the kids to suffer coz otherwise you can bring each other up like me and my siblings did as kids. (ps. english isn't my first language so apologies if i made some mistakes)
@dcornect53
@dcornect53 4 месяца назад
@@bertchiers1833 that's what I'm saying, it's one thing to make a kid earn what they get, but it's another thing for narcissistic or selfish parents to not want 1 of their kids to have anything ever (basically because they kind of want to punish the kid they don't like for simply existing). I find it usually happens to firstborn children, children with disabilities, children of a divorced or divorcing couple who are too old or aware to be weaponized against the other parent, or to stepchildren (mostly after the stepparent has another child with the kid's actual parent because they view the new child as better and more worthy of love for being theirs). It's also seen a lot in the forms of sabotaging the success of the targeted child and guilt-tripping the target child, along with a lot of other emotional and psychological abusive tactics as those forms of abuse do not leave visible scars at the hands of the abuser, but rather form complex trauma that impacts all areas of life of the child (and into adulthood) in most cases unless help is received, even being passed onto their children (becoming generational trauma). This complex trauma can also cause physical injury, mainly self-inflicted or inflicted by siblings or abusive partners, but may also cause psychosomatic symptoms such as weakened immune system, chronic pain, fatigue, high blood pressure, etc. It's a real problem that a lot of people don't realize, as it isn't seen as actual abuse under the law, it has been normalized (and even "justified") by older generations in quite a few ways (including in media), and the effects take a long time to manifest to a concerning extent (and by that time the victim of this abuse is usually blamed by both others and themselves as they have internalized their abuser's logic).
@dcornect53
@dcornect53 4 месяца назад
@@bertchiers1833 you get it ya. By not letting anyone else help, it can be lied about as "teaching the kid independence" but really it is not wanting ANYONE to acknowledge the kid as even being worthy of existing. It is purposeful alienation and isolation beyond independence and hard work, but yet still legally allowed, so it is less likely to be seen as abuse by someone who hasn't experienced a similar thing, and might even not be seen as being abused (neglect is abuse) by the kid or others who have experiences similar things due to both the legal standards of abuse, and the psychological conditioning that may be found in both victims and perpetrators of abuse for this to be seen as allowable (and sometimes even the right thing to do, which can perpetuate this same kind of abuse through generations and even through societies).

Hearing about that one eye child that used it to get things the way she wanted reminded me of a kid in my school that was deaf and used it to get what she wanted, she’d purposely “forget” her hearing aids to not have to do work, she’d touch other peoples things, trying to steal them, her family was insane as well, tried to run over my friends dog. Well she so happened to try and do the casual thing she usual did to everyone to me, except I’m autistic, I don’t read social cues, I don’t mask, I care for my comfort. I became the teachers enemy basically as I was a “bully” as I refused to let her steal my things, and became annoyed very verbally everytime she tried to do anything wrong. The teacher went from having us sit together, to having to make a rule that we weren’t allowed to be put near each other. It was definitely for that child’s comfort though, not mine, but I’m glad I was so socially unaware, that when another disabled person pulled things I didn’t go “oh they are disabled I can’t do anything back” and instead would go “you fight first, I fight back”

Some people who say "but she's your mother" aren't even people from happy homes who are oblivious to abusive parents existing. Some of them are actual kids of abusive parents with zero self awareness. My maternal grandmother is an abusive shitstain whom I can't even call a human being. She abused my mom, her sisters and my cousin terribly. My mom doesn't talk to her for more than 20 years now. And when I told my mom a story about my friend who was abused the same way she was and how he moved out of the house the day he turned 18 and doesn't speak to his mom for several years now my mom was like "But why?! She's still his mom, the person who gave him life! Who's gonna help her when she's old? He's selfish!". Oh, the irony.

This subreddit reminds me of something my Mother's therapist told her, which was passed down to me: "Every confrontational statement, jab, or snide comment made to you has a cost to be paid. You decide who foots the bill." As a chronic self-esteem trashcan, this was huge in helping me to stand up for myself. You don't have to be mean, but just a small comment can change the entire dynamic. An example from a couple months ago, I'm asexual and unfortunately have some radical right-leaning family members, one of whom was constantly pestering me about "finding a God fearing husband and settling down to have kids, and to leave college so I don't ruin my life." Le barf. I finally got sick of it and planned y retort. Like clockwork, she asked me again when I'd become a Christian mother, and my response was " Aunt, I LITTERALY DON'T GIVE A F*CK!" and left. I remember doing my social year and there was a seminary about mental health. one topic was bullying and we all were called out to tell our stories (if comfortable). my seat neighbour was trying to get the rest around her to agree that no matter how long you get bullied, if you have a strong mind it won't ever bother you. so I soon after raised my hand to tell the whole room about how I got bullied for around 9 years in school (out of 12) and how I tried to stay strong but it eventually got to me and just broke me. I was so close to ending my life several times because no one ever gave a shit. and instead, they just told me I'm emotionally strong. yeah, otherwise I'd be long gone. but only then they would've cared. afterwards. anyway, the whole room went silent for a few minutes while I just sat there, sipping on my water. sure enough, the person who was so sure of herself before, never said a word about the topic again during the seminary I've gained a lot of confidence since then, though my gender dysphoria often enough takes it back to 0 again. and still, there's a scar deep inside that still makes me passively suicidal. so no, feeling the effects of bullying isn't a sign of weakness. it means you're strong. you're still surviving

Note: I never had any thought about ending my life. I just... accepted the situation, I think. Result? In my 30s (= 15 years after the end of the bullying) I'm still totally unable to set up boundaries, don't know how to make friends, have never anything to say in the conversations, and DON'T EVEN KNOW WHEN I FEEL BAD OR WHEN I FEEL GOOD...

My experience with bullying is definitely related. I was very much a crybaby until I was in like 7th grade (6th and 7th grade for me were like night and day lol). But, when I was in elementary school, like mainly Kindergarten & 1st grade but to a lesser extent up to like 4th grade, I was bullied. So, when I was getting bullied in school by "friends," I was told that I needed to stop reacting so much, and that they were only bullying me to get a rise out of me, basically saying that it was my fault I was getting bullied. It eventually stopped but I didn't realize until way later that I was basically being victim-blamed for my bullying and that it was all BS. My experience with bullying definitely isn't as bad as yours, but I think it goes to show that people on the outside never really understand what's going on, and they'll always look for a reason to blame you for it.

It's a huge disservice to not push them to learn their own capabilities and problem solve. The thing about the name being misspelled really made me laugh for several reasons: I dated a guy in high school, and he told me the story of how his prior school's principal (maybe a teacher) told him that he was pronouncing his last name wrong. Even told the parents that it was being pronounced wrong. They never did resolve it before they moved. I also had a friend in the same high school whose given name was a common nickname of a common name. When we were set to graduate, there was a teacher or admin responsible for getting the correct info so our names would be correct on the diploma. They got upset and kept putting the full common name instead of my friends actual given name on papers we needed to sign and stuff before graduation. Even after my friend brought in his birth certificate, this person said his "nickname" can't be his given name. We were in a predominantly military families school (60% of us were military kids), so his dad, a high-ranking officer in the Air Force, had to come in and set the admin straight. It was fantastic, and I wish I'd been in the room to see it. Some people are weird about names.

As a disabled person who grew up having to take extra classes either other disabled kids to learn how to manage with our conditions better and make future challenges easier and I can assure you that disabled kids can be just as big of bullies as fully abled kids I remember one girl who was even worse than Ree and she even once tried to get a teacher fired because the teacher wouldn’t let her bully the other kids anymore and she had almost the whole staff wrapped around her finger and would threaten other students that if they didn’t do her bidding she would go to the office and say that they were billing her to get them suspended and she was completely mentally there she just had a physical disability so she knew exactly what she was doing and was an expert an manipulation and was just as mentally capable as any other student but because she had problems walking she figuratively walked all over everyone

There's this one girl in most of my friend's classes with minor autism and MY GOSH SHE IS BABIED. Said friend has pretty bad autism paired with ADHD and still has good grades, andndoes their work. The other girl does absolutely nothing, always wanders around the school during class, and is just a minor jerk at times. The teachers are always like "Oh but she has autism! It's not her fault!" She's literally told me she upplays it and in reality she has little difference from us with it. Also, my other friend forgot to do an assignment once and literally got SCREAMED at by the teacher who coodles the other girl the most.

The one story where the parents wanted their first born, that they never allowed them any happiness ever, to purchase those ridiculously overpriced gifts for the siblings, that story is the one I'm referring too. I grew up like that, myself. My father never wished to provide, anything, more than just the basics for, despite my mom's wishes to do so. He was the abuser in our household. Yet, when my siblings were born 13 and 15 years after I was, it became clear, they were getting spoiled with the things I never got. I have a horrible feeling, with the story you read, that the OP's parents had wished for such exuberantly, expensive gifts to be purchased for OP's siblings, had dark intentions behind it. The fact that the parents had not wanted their first born, to give any of the gifts, directly to their siblings, by themselves is very sus. I have a bad feeling, those kids would have never received anything if the OP had done so. I think the parents may have gotten behind on some bills, and wanted the expensive gifts so they could secretly, either be returned for the cash, or exchanged for a lot of smaller gifts, that the parents could then say we're from themselves, to their younger kids. Or, they may have just wanted to outright sell them on the Internet, for some quick cash, to cover the family's Christmas gifts or a vacation for them, or something. Then they probably would have lied and said their older sibling didn't get them anything, just to be extra cruel to OP. I grew up with one insane parent, the other one was an angel, to have put up with as much abuse as she had. I could totally put myself in that poster's shoes, and I could, so see that happening. I pray I'm wrong, but it was just a feeling I had, from growing up in that same kind of craziness.

I am sorry your parents failed you. The amount of "parents" in my friend group refered to by first name or simply "the donor" is staggering. Heck even my FIL calls his bio dad "the donor", and that man is in his 50s. The entire time listening to the story, all I could think was: If that was me, I would buy the gifts for the siblings, not tell the parents, show up on Christmas/at the birthday party hand delivering the gifts, just to tell the parents "Now I am punishing the right people". I get to be the cool older sibling AND be petty. Win-win!

I'm currently struggling with my health as it is and I'm trying my best to sleep well as possible but it's difficult to wake up early sometimes. He eventually asked my age and I said I was 17. This is when he doubles down and says "but you're going to be 18 soon, right?" I was taken aback but just answered "I guess, yeah." It wasn't until he left the store that my coworkers came up to me to ask if i was okay, I didn't know why until until they flat out said that he was hitting on me. The one about the guy being racist to natives got me laughing because I've had experienced something similar, on my mother's side of the family I'm indigenous but my fathers is whiter than white, and I got my dad's colouring. I was in a cab on my way home from getting groceries, and the cab driver (Which nobody liked) was chatting with me the ride home. He often liked to chat with me because I'm nice or something, but one day brought up some racist remarks towards Indigenous folk and talked to me like I would agree with him. So then I just said in a fake sad tone "Sir, I'm Indigenous on my mothers side, I thought you liked me" For the rest of the ride home he stumbled over his words to try and fix what he said but nothing helped, got home, got my groceries inside, and he awkwardly left. 😆

While she was doing was definitely not okay, I actually feel really bad for Ree. I was the disabled mainstream kid in my school, and there were times I was restricted by my parents are teachers from doing things that I was capable of because it was more convenient for them not to have to deal with me possibly making mistakes. It wasn't for me as much as it was for them. It sounds like she was not allowed to do anything. What a miserable existence. While I never intentionally took advantage of my condition, this reads is a desperate attempt to gain some control over her life. And to go from being mainstreamed to a special school... a lot of special education programs are understaffed and the teacher must cater to people of many different ability levels at the same time, leading to an incomplete education. Bullying is wrong, but l hope my fears are unfounded and she got the help she needed.

13:53 My siblings and I are mixed. My sister and brother look very Hispanic while I look white. The amount of times we would separate and they would be doing something and a white person whispers to me "They should go back to their country" (or some other racist remark) only for me to walk over, give them a hug, and be like "I love my big sister/little brother soooooo much!" is priceless. Especially because they know the reason I do this, so we just look at the racist with a knowing look and, if their face could drain color more, it would.
