My mom is a psychologist. Click is 100% correct that you do not need to forgive someone to move on. Actually, trying to force yourself to forgive someone can do damage to your mental health, as you may begin invalidating your own lived experiences and trauma.

A couple years ago, I tried to forgive a mental abuser & let them back in after keeping them out of my life for 8 or so years... @@Alleyhellcat4Ever forgiveness doesn't mean you have to repair the unrepairable, it doesn't mean you have to take them back into your life. In fact I think you must.

What I found through experience is that I personally find it more useful to try and understand WHY they did it, what made them tick. It doesn't mean I forgave them, but at least it gives me a sense of knowing what happened to me. Although in my parents' case that did end up in me realizing I can't really blame them for what they did bc they just didn't have the faculties to do better.

One of the most commonly thought of "suffering artists" is Vincent Van Gogh, and he made some of his most iconic works such as Stary Night while receiving mental healthcare, when his housing was stable and when his brother was able to help him out where he could. Getting help or starting psychiatric medications won't ruin your 'spark'. It'll help
@JDM-is-my-name
@JDM-is-my-name 3 месяца назад
The fact that so many people keep up the myth that Van Gogh was constantly struggling and mentally down, when in fact most of his most popular and beautiful works were made when he was STABLE and HAPPY even with his mental health not being good. You can be happy and thriving and being helped while still struggling, because life isn't one singular at all time. Everyone has ups and downs and no matter what, you'll make the best things when you are working on being stable and healthy

Ehh I feel like my best work has been in times where I have been slightly unstable or down. You tend to feel more, and therefore more emotion goes into the work. Maybe it's just the work I feel more attached to since it embodies more emotion. I don't miss those times, but I do kinda miss the creativity.

And sometimes it makes you feel weird about people being nice to other people. I always feel weird when I see parents and children getting along because I also grew up very isolated, so it's very alien to me. I remember being a teenager and one of the few times I was at a friend's house, he and his mom were joking around and horseplaying (I distinctly remember my friend pinging his mom's bra strap) and I was just sitting there, frozen, waiting for the situation to explode and it just... didn't. My mom always started shouting at the slightest dig (or something she perceived as a dig, which was basically everything) and also preferred to aim for the face. When I turned 18, my mom told me that she couldn't legally hit me anymore since it's now assault, though now she just denies having ever hit me. And the thing is, I think it's a genuine possibility that she doesn't remember. Not because she has memory issues but because she's proved to me time and time again that she just didn't care about me enough for anything in my life to be worth remembering to her. Unfortunately for her, I'm just as stubborn as she is and she never succeeded in breaking me.

Yea, my mom is like a fake nice or like a 50/50 love idk it's weird... I guess a small story time Ok, so when I was younger, I came out as a trans girl (mtf) around when I was 14, and I had a Spur of the moment interest in telling my mom that I'm a girl. I envisioned all these good stories. And I ended up doing it... And it's like, really, fake supportive. As a basically what they said was yeah. I support you as my son. And I love you as my son. And I was like, well? Why can't you love me as your child?... It hurts, I don't like that I have to see them 5 times a week. I'm always on Edge... My friends tell me that I act like an adult nowadays. I wonder if that's why... Did something change when my hopes and dreams were shattered? Personally, idk, but I'm fine I'm still here, aren't I?

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was a kid. Despite knowing this, my parents did NOTHING to help. Couldn't focus, didn't understand anything, couldn't clean my room. Cleaning my room and doing homework. I needed help but no one would explain anything to me. I was expected to just know. Now I'm packing, trying to clean, and trying to focus... despite getting on meds and just got a therapist, I didn't know how bad the anxiety is. I'm all alone trying to pack and I'm in misery. Doesn't help my moms blood curling screaming to tell me to clean in my head Doesn't help.

I'm so sorry. I hope healing will find you soon ❤. One thing that has helped me is getting a bunch of different containers, and letting my adhd obsess over sorting things into little, smaller things. Like sorting all of my medical stuff, or all of my art stuff, or clothes by color, which helps overall in the end. But if you have to pack up your whole life, set aside the things you absolutely need day to day. Then just dump everything into boxes. It doesn't need to be sorted, as long as stuff isn't spilling into other stuff. That's the only stuff that needs to be packed carefully, as well as the fragile stuff, but you can also use clothing to keep that stuff safe, and knock it out faster. You don't have to pack in any specific way. Just do whatever makes it easy for you ❤

I hear you and empathise - ADHD and Autism as a kid, plus an emotionally abusive mother. Huge pressure to do well at school (educational achievement seemed to be the only value I had to my mother) but yeah, parental 'support' was simply ridiculous and relentless criticism of every other part if my life. All I can say is (as am now years away from that situation) it does get better - therapy gave me a lot of tools to get my own life back, and yeah when those moments of crippling anxiety and low self worth hit I have some things I can down/think to get me out of it.

AuDHD here too to say- Breathe. The anxiety is horrible. Your brain is probably saying all the steps and its overwhelming because you can't keep up. It boils down to surfaces, containers, and floor. Put on something for you to listen to, a podcast or audiobook or even click videos in the corner. And work on one of those areas at a time. You will need lots of breaks, it will take more time, thats okay. Thats normal. You'll get faster as your brain gets used to how it works best for you. And if it feels painful to do that thing at that time? Don't force yourself, thats how you get into burnout/stay in burnout. You'll probably have to cut down on a lot of things to reset and relearn how to do everything. Google will be your best friend. No shame in googling all your 'stupid' questions. Breathe, lay down with some weight on top of you, you got this

I never realized how real Click’s tangent about creeps just being normal people during the day was until recently. A family friend of ours who my parents trusted so much they considered making it so he had to take care of us if something happened to them was recently arrested for making CP. It’s crazy to think about how someone you knew and loved can end up being such an awful person. We knew he was kind of going off the deep end a few years ago but apparently, he just got worse and worse from there.

Ted Bundy had a ton of people who were certain the police were completely off base. Because they were part of his “other life” where he was a wonderful person who even volunteered at a suicide/emergency help hotline. Then the prosecution showed the bite impression evidence, and he turned towards the people sitting beside him and just kind of shrugged, like “Oops!” Though there are certainly exceptions, most “monsters” do a very good job of hiding what they really are. If they didn’t they’d have a much smaller potential victim pool.

3:50 Both my niece and her roommate went through similar abuse like that, which has actually made them fantastic roommates for each other because they _understand._ Like if one of them accidentally slams one of the kitchen cabinets, they call out "Sorry, accident!!" And just in general they know which triggers affect each other, so they nip those misconceptions/misunderstandings in the bud before they can even start. It's fucking terrible that both of them went through the abuse, but I'm happy they were able to find each other in order to nurture the exact kind of living environment they both need in order to heal along with their therapists.

Me and my brother are now roommates, and we went through an upbringing like that. It breaks my heart whenever I'm laughing about something, and he calls out in a quiet voice to check if I'm crying. But also, now that it's just us, he can actually be _allowed_ now to express when he's close to/having a meltdown (autism), _without_ it being treated as inherently outrageous and triggering an unsafe environment. So, sighing in frustration, putting things down heavily. I still really struggle with not instantly having my anxiety triggered, but at the same time I'm so glad he feels safe enough to express negative emotions. It's a pretty tricky balance 😅

I said I feel like they're going to resent me for telling them. They went silent and then talked about other things, meanwhile I'm thirdwheeling the next 20 minutes of our walk, imagining I'm alone and not a human to make it feel less weird for me. I was brought back in with an uncomfortable question about hunger because of sb they actually care about having some problems. I tried not to respond and to maybe let them forget I was even there, but they pressed me once more so I had to tell them te truth: Yes, I have been so hungry I felt dizzy multiple times before. Cool, cool. Cnversation continued without me. I don't know anymore whether I'm just bitter or still getting emotionally neglected. It's just how things have been most of my life. I dont know when I am in the wrong for not having emotional support and when the others goofed up. Guess I^ll have to stomach this alone for some more time.

@Azooi 3 месяца назад
@@LibraryofAcousticMagic3240 it sounds like you do indeed need more emotional support than you're getting, but I also want you to know that people are imperfect and will not always respond in the most fitting way even if their intentions are good. In an ideal world, your friends would have responded reassuringly when you said you feel like they would resent you for opening up, but it's not always a response that comes naturally. They probably thought they were being considerate by changing the subject, giving you space to decide when/if to open up. The topic of another friend who is also going through some troubles could even be their way of trying to signal that they have talked about tough topics with others and don't resent them for it. I know it's difficult, especially so when your brain is programmed to interpret everything in the most negative way possible, but it really helps to try to find the kindest possible explanation for someone's behaviour, rather than always assuming ill intent (e.g. "they hate me", "they don't care about me"). It won't always be true, but people are generally more kind and caring than you think, especially when you're going through a rough time. You can also test the waters a bit by talking about your current emotions, such as "you changing the subject made me feel left out of the conversation" and if they're willing to listen to that, it'll be easier to trust them with your heavier emotions. Just try and not phrase it in an accusing manner ("why did you change the subject? You made me feel neglected"), I know it's tricky to communicate about these kinds of things, so take small steps. I hope you'll find the support you need and that whatever is making you feel bad will get better soon

Real coping device for acute and recovering anxiety: Just a reminder that eating/ sucking on sour candy when anxiety flares up will help ease (or even stop) the symptoms of anxiety! It is actually scientifically proven and used by therapists! The sourness causes your mouth to produce more saliva, and in doing so your nervous system goes "Wait a minute. We have saliva. There isn't any saliva in the flight or fight mode. I guess we better be on in calm mode now?". Chewing gum can also help, as long as it helps make saliva. Salty foods aren't good for this tho, and spicy can be iffy since too much spicy can actual make the panic response worse due to sensing pain.
@tealkerberus748
@tealkerberus748 3 месяца назад
Just remember that acid in your mouth softens your dental enamel, and sugar feeds the bacteria that create cavities. Once you've dealt with the immediate crisis it's good to firstly alkalise your saliva by mouthwashing with bicarb soda or something like it to re-harden the enamel, and then brush your teeth to get rid of the sticky sugary film left on your teeth from the candy. Damaged teeth are expensive to fix!

The internet tells you that journaling helps with mental illness but movies tell you that the journal will be found and read. It really is a situation of pick your poison. Personally, I admire you for at least taking the chance that it could work out. My socially anxious butt waited for way to long to start a diary and it was only when I was convinced of 2 things: My housemates didn't care about me enough to read up on me and that apparently, my handwriting was real ugly. 2:14 Uncle Iroh once said that firebending doesn't come from anger. It comes from breath. Well, to whoever needs to hear this, art doesn't come from the [insert mental health issue] (in my case it's BPD & Depression) it comes from the ability to convey feelings through your chosen art form. For a moment, when Zuko stoped being angry, he lost his bending. That's because his anger was what he had been channeling. Same goes for art/creativity. But then he adjusted. He learnt firebend, even better than before, without the anger. You can learn to create without being a "tortured artist". In the same way that it is healthier to go workout when you're angry than it is to punch a wall, it's also healthier to take negative emotions and put them into art rather thank hurting/ neglecting yourself or others about it. But remember. The was a time before the bad things. There will be a time after. You are not alone. There is no shame in needing mental health support, or medication. It will not change who you are fundamentally. You are enough. You are important. You are not alone.

When you think I am normal, or everyone goes through the same stuff as you do, or I'm just bad, it isn't the disease you're lacking it is perspective. There's nothing wrong in asking for advice or for help. The people who shame you for it have a stick so far up into their butt that they can see it through their mouth. However I did not understand the difference between being prayed FOR and prayed OVER. Only a few people did that, but it means they put their hands on your head or shoulders and pray out loud. I’m very big on personal space, so the first couple times my automatic response was to step back and then they were confused. Be it a cat, a dog, a rodent, bird, or a snek, you will find an animal that you can care for that will care for you. ❤ Hell, even goldfish recognize their owners! It's an eternal struggle with one internal voice saying "get your effing act together" and the other one saying "there's no point. Just give up". Fortunately, in my case, the first voice usually wins. But that's also how I might get in trouble, like ignoring obvious pain signs in my body and taking it to the extreme.

The bit about people hating themselves but having the confidence to "effortlessly surpass god" at 37:58 reminded me of something my late brother told me, not too long before he died - he said "You rely a lot on self-deprecating jokes. Go easy on those, it's too easy to start believing them." It seemed like a rare lucid moment, in his last months, so it's stuck with me. I think he's right, too.

10:23 Dopamine does actually make colors appear brighter and more colorful, especially noticable when you are depressed and little dopamine is released. Source: My nicotine habit that helped partially mitigate my depression before I got antidepressants. 19:39 I only have thirteen tabs open as well. One thousand, six hundred, and thirteen to be exact. In this window. 2263 if I count all the windows. Which is significantly less than before I closed a few windows a week or so ago, when it was more like 5000-6000+. 31:33 Well, that's just me every three to five months.

that passive aggressive/angrily folding a sock at you thing is far too real. I have had to explain a lot of the behaviors I'm working on to both my partner and our kiddo because from the outside it's like "why do you always think I'm mad *at you* specifically?" but hey, I internalized everything being my fault growing up so I just came to expect it!

10:13 "It feels like the colours in the world get brighter." -- Depression frequently causes sensations to become less intense, for example colours seem pale or dull, food tastes bland, touch is dim and distant, etc. It can lead to the feeling you do not exist and/or the world does not exist because you are deprived of physical sensation.

I actually haven't even stood on a scale on my own initiative in ages because it's just not useful information for me, as the struggle I deal with is hitting that balance of doing enough core strength exercise without doing too much to the point my damaged spine starts to break.

14:23 This little bit made me realize something very crucial in my life, and that is how I lately finally started to heal. I've been abused by an ex best friend, who made me more quiet, shy and non-confrontational (Probably to be more controlling). I blocked them and never spoke to them long ago, but that personality change stayed for years. In the beginning of this year though, I've seen a change in me. I smile in pictures again, I openly talk about my issues, I enjoy being out with friends. I finally feel alive again, and that honestly makes me happy. Thank you for making me realize it, I have no idea why I didn't connect the past to it. And to everyone else who might have experienced the same, take as much time as you need to heal, it will get better, it will be okay

14:42 "You can heal without forgiving someone" Yes, thank you, sincerely. ❣ You can not forgive someone who will not apologise. The attitude that it's a moral high ground or doing "the right thing" to forgive ANY AND EVERY awful act or crime against you, even when the perpetrator is not asking for it, is mentally harming IMO. It's even worse when added that if you don't, you're a hateful person who will never find peace, which is absolutely untrue and seems to be a very American idea, or a Phil McGraw one. You will find peace by working through what happened, with or without help, forgiveness has nothing to do with it, it's about your healing, not the perpetrator.
