Our country has religiously taxed the poor. Increasing VAT from 14% to 15%, increasing the tax rates of individuals vs decreasing corporate tax from 28% to 27%. One thing that has become clear during the elections is that our politicians campaign off of the backs of the poor but when it matters most, it's the interest of the markets and those who control/influence the markets that are protected. We literally exist for the advancement of the rich. That's all we seem to be.

Even if that’s the case, they too would still struggle to pay the R200. This is something that any Government should think about before implementing a blanket approach system. If they did the same thing for taxes you would probably be complaining because from your comment, I take it that this R200 doesn’t affect you. It is their responsibility to come up with a system that will accommodate everyone, not to be lazy and just implement even though “some” residents disagreed with this initiative.

Their argument is so weird, maintanance charges are always included in the price, if you order from checkers you pay for delivery to your house but you don't pay for delivery of the product to the checkers, that's up to the product makers to do within the costs of their products. if they do need to increase costs they should be an increase to cost per kW not separately, then they use some of that money to cover maintenance, like every other commercial entity, if non pre-paid people are paying this surcharge it should be removed from them too.

If you want lower electricity prices, either the government monopolises it (i.e. no competition) and they do it properly (i.e. without corruption and mismanagement as was the case 15+ years ago), or I.P.P.'s are allowed to compete (i.e. no monopolies) which would bring prices down to market prices. Which position are you arguing for? It seems you are advocating for the third option where the rich subsidise corrupt, badly run, and therefore overpriced electricity? Am I missing something here?

It's saddening to note that our politicians across political lines don't understand mathematics or they are colluding with the monopolies. How can they allow such massive increase in electricity units just to accommodate IPP generated energy. The repercussions for this massive increase will be dire on the inflation. This just seems like a scheme to recoup the Metro's shortfall from those that do not pay for thier electricity. The prepaid electricity rate is generally higher that the credit rate. The Mayor's explanation sounds dodgy and needs fact checking with the regulator or electricity experts. The unit rate for credit meters is lower vs prepaid. If you factor in the amp charge, the prepaid and credit meter rates are comparable to a point if you normalise the amp charge to a rate per kWh e.g. if your bill was R 1000 (including amp charge) and you consumed 500kWh then you would have effectively paid R2 per kWh on credit which is cheaper than the R2.40 per kWh for prepaid users. So the model effectively punishes the credit user if they save electricity but it works out cheaper the more they consume (to a point) so in this instance I cant see how prepaid customers are being subsided unless they are refering to those that have bridged their meters. I think our politicians and their technocrats are trying to sell us nonsense in this case. Where's OUTA?

Yet another reason politicians should get smaller salaries. They implement these things cause it doesnt effect them. Its not only the poor. What about the middle class? Starting with a salary of R7000, already struggling and putting aside R500 for electricity. Thats a almost 50% increase. In your previous video you asked if ministers and mp's should clean their own mansions and pool's if they lose this benefits? They can clearly pay for it themselves with salaries over R200k and R100k. They got accommodation and transport for free already. These two items are the biggest expenses on a normal south africans income. So they need to pay for far more then just own cleaning services and pool teams. They need to understand what they are asking from us.

Seems like you're inciting violence here? Careful. The easy solution is to make everything prepaid. User pays regardless of your economic circumstances. The rich use more power, so they will automatically pay the lions share. To use a progressive tax system, which is arguably not fair either, to justify a progressive power charge is not a good example. Having a low, flat rate, income tax system with minimum threshold and doubling VAT on luxury ( non-basic) items could benefit the poor.
