Steroids issue aside, this is the most 90s documentary I’ve ever seen. This editing is like a beautiful time capsule into straight-to-VHS sports featurettes.
you probably dont care but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost the account password. I love any help you can give me.
@Augustine Jay Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I was 9 years old during the summer of ‘98 and it was a summer I’ll never forget. Life goes quick and people come & go but I’ll always cherish that particular summer and the great memories and the time I spent with people that I wish were still around today. The ballgames with my father, playing MLB The Show with cousins, pretending to be Big Mac while playing whiffle ball with my neighborhood friends, and staying up late with my sister in order to steal the TV remote, flip to ESPN, and see who took the homer in lead... These were great times with some great people who shaped my personality for the rest of my life. Say what you want about steroids but these two were a galvanizer for many people. That magical summer brought a lot of joy & optimism to this world and I just want to thank them for being a part of my childhood. This is what sports is about.
I was 9 as well and this summer made me fall in love with baseball again, for awhile at least, I don't care about the steroid use because everyone was on em. This was such a magical time and I'm so thankful I was alive to see it and can still remember the feeling I had watching these guys race for it..
Everything about Griffey Jr. was awesome. His swag, swing, athleticism. Anyone remember “Hi this is Ken Griffey Junior. Let’s play Major League Baseball.” Also him and his dad hitting back to back HRs when they played for Seattle at THE SAME TIME! Just legendary lore.
Griffey became a crybaby when he went to Cincinnati,,Safeco Field was easier to hit home runs that Riverfront,,he wanted the fences to be brought in,,lol
@@bjacko5019 your full of crap he was just frustrated over injuries one thing we know Griffey never cheated if he had his body would have healed faster like McGwires did or so MCGwire claimed he juiced just for health reasons which I don’t by it.
i dont blame bonds. mcgwire and sosa werent in the same league as bonds. he saw two mediocre players become great with steroid. what happens if a great player began using?
Danny Burke True story: I once body guarded for Chipper back in his hay day...when he was still married to his first wife...just shadowed him for a whole day of meet and greets...he was so hungover but he handled it like a champ! I was surprised how normal he was...wasn’t stuck up...just that guy you always liked hanging out with!
I barehanded a foul ball off of Ken Griffey Jr. in a game with my parents, brother, and fiancé (now married 25 years)...still have the ball on my desk.
For those too young to remember, these two guys saved baseball. the strike of 1994 and the subsequent cancellation of the World Series, set the stage for the terminal decline of baseball. But Lo and Behold, a few years later these two guys packed the ball parks. They had us watching the evening news (!) to see if either "Went Yard". Both men were class acts, cheering each other on. We were all amazed to see it happen. We all saw Maris in sight. Should Sosa and McGwire be in the Hall?? We will always debate it. But I will say this, we all owe them a debt for saving the game we love.
Man, greatest save of baseball ever. Watching both players everyday saved the greatest game. Steroids etc nobody as a fan of baseball can take that excitement away from us in 98. Thank you to both men
I remember this time pretty clearly. I remember the whole Andro thing and how he just said matter of factly that he bought it over the counter and it’s not illegalI. He was right. It wasn’t banned or anything in MLB. This season was special. It was about more than baseball. McGwire paid the ultimate respect to Maris’ family which even brought Roger Maris to the forefront for what he accomplished and what he had to deal with. I mean is Maris the only 2x MVP that’s not in the Hall of Fame? Not counting Bonds. It’s ridiculous. McGwire was humble and Sosa was fun. The entire U.S. was pulling for them. I remember where I was watching it on TV when he broke the record. Even the next year he hit 65 and Sosa hit 63. Even though it was broken by Bonds in 2001 rather impressively, it wasn’t the same. Not the same at all.
This was an awesome summer I remember turning on espn every am to watch the highlights. This was when baseball was awesome. Everyone loved it when it was happening and kinda knew what was going on. Then everyone turned on mark when he came out and said it.
I loved Mac’s graciousness with the Maris family. Makes your eyes wet. He didn’t have to give them anything but he did, and they really appreciated that.
He disgraced Roger Maris & his family knowing he cheated to fraudulently break a record which he no longer owns in my book, & Barry Bonds doesn’t either. Cheating is Cheating there is no difference in cheating Steroid guys, Houston Astros, same offense cheating just did it in another way. It’s called a illegal competitive advantage.
@@joeclayton2121 Yes, now that you mentioned it, and in 2005, refuses to answer questions about Steroids use, instead saying, iam not here to talk about the past!!!!
These two guys provided us with some of the most exciting baseball moments ever. Try and match the feeling baseball fans had watching this. I loved it and still do.
Id like to see any average joe on steroids hit 70 homeruns off any major league pitcher my opinion if it did anything it made them healthy ballplayers mark hit 49 homeruns his rookie year skinny kid talents talent

One of if not the most majestic and most favorable memory as a 9 almost 10 year old little kid back in 1998 what an amazing and awesome year '98 was as my Tennessee Vols also won the national championship that same year
You're awesome for posting this. I used to have this on vhs, and I don't think they have it on dvd. I've been wanting to see it again for a while, so thank you!
Bro I just made that comment that the nineties were my favorite decade.carefree like a mfr back then.we weren't worried about kids shooting up schools, kids od'ing off fentanyl.the biggest threat was Halloween candy and pins put in the candy.
Philip Lopiano First of all I made a simple comment that wasn’t socially politically motivated. Second of all I disagree with you a lot. There were just as many horrible things to worry about in the 90’s as there are today. You’re looking at it through nostalgic lenses. In fact I argue that the world (for most people) has never been better than it is.
@@canag0d I disagree 100 percent and was just making a comment, dont care if you agree or comment or whatever. Enjoy your great world now with no movement and freedom.how that can be better than the nineties is beyond me but to each his own.lol
Philip Lopiano Lol good point. The 90’s were lucky and didn’t have a pandemic. So that means that since 2020’s have, the world is worse? 1917 Spanish flu bro... Was the world better than? How about rapists and pedophiles who could hide in 1990 because no internet... How about if a pandemic hit in 1990 and how much more fucked we’d be then than we are now? No I made a comment about how the 90’s were great. But it was far from perfect bro.
@@stingrey1571 It's a shame that Bonds felt that way. He was a great player without the HGH. Arguably better when he was less bulky because he could steal bases and field more efficiently while still hitting for power and getting on base when needed.
@@larrylindgren9484 they meant brought it back to relevance and its place in the big 4 American sports. Attendance and revenues were slumping. So it wouldn't have died but it very well could have been a shell of its former self in the public's consciousness.
There have been many comebacks throughout history: Jesus was dead, but then came back as an all-powerful God zombie; Ryan O'Neal had his ups and downs, but is now back and better than ever. Well, my comeback is almost complete, and I can say that when it is complete, it will shake the pillars of this land ortown. My story is the story of a raging Christ figure who tore himself off the cross and looked at the Romans, with blood in his eyes, and said, My turn now, cocksuckers
MCGwire is my favorite player of all time. Yeah he and many others (many who are in the hall of fame) took performance enhancers. The generation of players before them were on amphetamines. He hit 49 his first year in the league, and was a monster before the steroids. What he did in 98, and his personality, respect for others, and love for the game make him an all time great.
The truth is, YES THEY CHEATED, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT. Guess what else they did? They brought EXCITEMENT AND EYES TO THE GAME THE LIKES OF WHICH WE HAVEN’T SEEM BEFORE OR SINCE!!! I grew up in Boston and even now 24 years later I remember Big Mac’s 1999 All Star game HOME RUN DERBY PERFORMANCE LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY!!! Don’t get me wrong knowing what we know now I have EVEN MORE RESPECT for guys like Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson who were able to DO IT NATURALLY but to act as though what guys like Big Mac and Sosa did with THE JUICE wasn’t impressive or didn’t help the game is A LIE!!
The players took greenies which basically was speed, there not enhancers of anything, doesn't make you stronger, faster, recover from injury quicker, increase your testosterone , point I'm getting at is don't compare Mark McGuire who was jacked on PEDs to players who took speed, there's no comparison, not even close and for you to even bring this up shows that you are clueless
Derek Roberts it was a story he wrote while covering the cowboys in the 90s that he made up. As for him being a dunce. He never uses any facts, he just cites non existent factors like clutch genes, and it factors. He’s the sjw of the sports world.
@@drewbreesisontrtsoistombra1813 Yeah but Troy Aikman has 2 daughters?? Idk if he turned g@y etc though. However, I'd imagine when he played he was married...well, he has 2 daughters. So why would skip say that? Isn't he a cowboy fan? P.S..I.thought Romo had a good year or 2 left. Him with Zeke and 1 on 1 coverage? The same receivers they said wouldn't get open for Dak...Romo found a way to get them open. My 2 cents. I guess Romo was equivalent to your Troy Aikman in the 90s? Stephen Race Smith lol... SRS. Always brings race into every segment. Always thought skip...tbh I just watched him on first take and now with shannon.
Derek Roberts I agree Stephen Anus Smith is a clown as well. Shannon Sharpe is another dope too, but skip is the worst of the bunch. It’s like watching the special ed debate team. As for why he made up that aikman was gay. I think he did that for notoriety. It was the only way people would read his nonsense. Skip said he heard it from players, but he never gave a name of any source, most likely because he made that up too. What player would confide in that doofus.
I remember Omar, it broke my heart when they traded him to Cleveland. They had some punk kid on the bench to replace him named Alex Rodriguez. Whatever happened to that kid?
Scott Mi ..... uh, yeah, fuckface. not sure if you know this but arods pretty hated, punk isnt a good term, and sarcasm is hard to read in youtube comments, especially when you’re not good at it. piss off
Also, Griffey hit 50+ hr several times, not just one or two lucky seasons. he was always a monster, and he almost always faded late in season due to exhaustion. It was common for Griffey JR. to be at 30 HR at all star time, he just didn't juice so his endurance faded late season and he always faded off.
Exhaustion and injuries prevented him from seeing his full potential (both of which are helped by the “supplements” most of the other power hitters were taking), he had the best swing in baseball it was more technique than power, it was incredible. Dude was pure talent. And he’s still has a neck, not just a head on a tree trunk
@@jps101574 Because Ruth did not play 162 game season, nor did Maris. In fact Maris only played more than 140 games 4 times during his 12 year career. Until 1961 the league only consisted of 16 teams condensed mostly on the East Coast. So schedule was arguably a little easier as well. Regardless of that, neither of those guys played the field with such energy sacrificing their bodies in the field. Griffey was a 10x gold glove center fielder. Besides Willie Mays, name me another pure home run hitter who also happened to be a 5 tool player almost their whole career? I'll wait... And that is why Jr. was such a special player.
@@nicholasgonzalez6104 Just let everybody use steroids, make it an even playing field. If you're not juicing then you just aren't driven enough to win.
Mark McGwire had 70 and Sammy Sosa had 66, both players crushed the season home run record of 61 hit by Roger Maris in 1961. A race that made both McGwire and Sosa "Sportsmen of the Year" by Sports Illustrated in 1998.
Why didn't you hit 70+ homers then.? Ahhh that's right talent.... I played college baseball, truth is peds have been part of the game since the mid to late 70s. @@draeco6875 there is absolutely no concrete evidence saying that Griffey was clean throughout this, but also no evidence saying he was dirty. Baseball needed this season after the strike, and it just so happens you have 3 guys emerge to have a shoot out all season long and the record gets broken. This is exactly what baseball needed.
@@lancebaker1374 do you have that same reaction for guys doing speed every decade leading up to this? How about holding bud Selig responsible for allowing it... Even without drugs that his can still hit homeruns so relax man
Sammy Sosa signing Beanie Babies - the only way that could be more 1998 would be if he was sitting on inflatable furniture and Backstreet Boys was playing in the background.
McGuire and Sosa SAVED Baseball that year - steroids or not - 1998 became the most entertaining season in MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL history. Thank you, Mark and thank you, Sammy !
@Angry Grizzly Thank you for your utterly useless retort. If you are looking to deny the rampant steroid use by McGuire during that time, you better educate yourself, as he admitted it himself publicly. Check google. Also, I am sure Sosa was guilty of it, as well, however, he never admitted to it. Once again, it doesn't matter to me as it made watching Baseball that much more exciting that year - juiced balls and juiced players.
Henry Aaron is still number one on my book. He played 23 seasons and rarely missed games due to injury. He never even had a 50 HR season. He had 8 seasons of 40 or more, first one at 23, last one at 39. Interestingly, he had 4 44 HR seasons. Lifetime .305 hitter. 180 pounds as a rookie, 180 pounds when he retired.
dawoool i doubt Henry Hank Aaron was an 180lbs as a rookie and retired 23 years later at that same weight and i'm sure Aaron took and recieved some kind of treatments and shots to keep him going strong for 23 years playing in over 162 baseball games a season for that long of time
@@elhombrenegro4999 are you saying that Hank Aaron did things to himself such as the shots you mention that he was doing pretty much the same thing as the Ped users and they were all on the same level? First comment during the Coronavirus outbreak of 2020. When we had no sports at all watching this brought back the memory of how baseball was from 94-98 after the strike baseball was in ruins. These two no matter what they did to accomplish that it saved baseball and that’s what I remember them for...
pitching against roided up cheaters makes what Greg Maddux achieved even MORE awesome..and yes some pitchers juiced but not greg..he won those games and cy youngs with wicked control and 75 mph breaking balls and 80 mph sliders...not 103 mph fastballs
Greg Maddux was a control GOD. Roided or not, you can't hit what you can't see. Now we got only 2 hopes for a natural 60 HR season. Giancarlo Stanton and Joey Gallo. I won't accept people saying Gallo isn't legit. Why? He plays HR derby in every single game. His whole game plan is all or nothing, and his team has accepted that. He's a guy who hits .200 with 40 of 80 hits being HR in 2 different seasons. The only thing keeping him on the field is the fact that he knows the K-zone so well that he walks 100 times too . He might be the first person in MLB history to end his career with more HR than singles. Right now he just hit his 100th HR vs 93 career singles. AKA -- when he hits singles, it's a mistake. If that man ever gets his average up to say .260 or .270 -- that would give him 120 or more hits, and 60+ HR the way he plays. Think of the HR as a 3-point shot in NBA. Before 2010 or so, the 3-pointer wasn't used as a primary weapon. It was only after the Warriors and Rockets put in the work and based their games around it, that the shot was used as a first option in each game., Gallo is going to hit 60 HR legit someday. It's the Rocket's 3pt shot mentality -- he's trained himself to take and make 3 pointers as a first option. He's going up to the plate, not to hit the ball where it's pitched, but to hit the ball into the stands as a first choice.
@@CSaw92 That was the single awesomest performance in ASG history. It cost him big time, too, because he injured his shoulder, got rocked in his next start, and went on the DL. Had it not been for his overdoing it in the ASG, he'd have won 26-27 games with an ERA of 1.70.
It's pretty obvious that he was juicing but I was 6'3" 170 lbs when I was 22. Then 10 years in the Army and I was 245 lbs. It's not out of the ordinary for men to thicken up as they age. Yes, he took it to the extreme but that isn't necessarily a give away. He was still a pretty big kid then and hit 49 as a rookie. Barry Bonds on the other hand, was an actual skinny dude and looked like the Hulk by 73...
The truth ?? MLB and the Government knew about the roids shit. Baseball business was suffering from the 1994 strike. The game needed some boost. These fellas did the job they were assigned, got Baseball Business back, and the were betrayed by the MLB and the Government..
Admitted?? horseshit! He blamed baseball. He said it was the "steroid-era". Garbage!! if that was true, EVERYONE in baseball, including pitchers, would have been doing it. They weren't good enough to hit home runs WITHOUT juicing, that's why they did it. Plain and simple.
Haha oh well. Never accused, never caught. Hall of famer with the highest percentile. He wouldn't have gotten in if they even thought he was juicing. Im not saying that you don't have a point, but until it comes out, it's sheer speculation.
Regrdless, I don't care whether or not Griffey did, but Jim Thome was my idol growing up. I plan on making the ride up to Cooperstown when he is inducted into the HOF.
Had Griff JR not been injured the few times he was, he would've not only broken the single season record for most HR's, but would've also probably been the all time HR king while being clean his entire career!
Has Mac not juiced up he'd have not even been close. He was a terrible hitter. Swing hard and pray the pitcher hit his bat. He'd fit right in with the clowns of baseball today. Strikeout 15 times in a row? So what I hit a homerun on the 16th time. Exciting.
