Racing like it's 2022. Have yet to ride a tubeless setup that corners as well as a nice set of 25mm vittoria or veloflex tubulars. Those Donnelly tubs are tubeless and will have quite stiff sidewalls. Need to run much lower pressure than 90 psi to get the proper flex and cornering feel. Almost impossible to pinch flat one of these on a crit course.

How's there a minimum tire pressure with tubs?! I'm running tubs on my race wheels and I use pressures just as low as what I'd run tubeless or with inner tubes. There's no harm in that and they roll great! It's almost impossible to pinch flat a tub. In CX the guys run them at like 20psi and hammer over ruts and stuff without flatting them. In fact, one of the greatest things about tubs is that for the same level of perceived comfort you can run higher pressures. I'd even argue that if you compare the exact same tire width and set them up for the same level of comfort, tubs still roll and corner better. They might be less aero. But all comparisons between tire systems ignore the feel and just compare tire systems at the same pressure regardless of the difference in feel and construction.

I gave him my bike since we're the same size (Ciocc compact alum/carbon/ SRAM Red mechanical/TRP R960 rim brakes). He swapped in his own saddle/bars/stem/pedals and off he went to the races (P12). Electronic shifting is being pushed by the bike companies so it's what's being used by pros. But since the general consumer will not be willing to buy them because of the price and we now how's the bike market has been going lately, I'm pretty sure bike companies wouldn't be able to sustain that push. (Unless they find a way to make electronic shifting significantly cheaper)

@Shellewell
@Shellewell Месяц назад
Personally I built up a used 2018 Giant Propel frame with 105 R7000 in 2020 on a much smaller budget with a pair of 50mm Prime carbon wheels (RIP Wiggle). Spent just under £2000/$2500 all-in and my god is it fast. Would absolutely recommend that frameset.Only change I would make is to put in disc brakes so the wheel rim isn't a wear item, but such are the trade-offs of hunting ebay for the right opportunity. I definitely think most modern framesets are very good, and it can be splitting hairs for meaningful differences between frames which can have a huge price difference. You are better saving the money by getting a good condition used frameset without the huge name of the SL7 (what about a used TCR if you are looking lightweight?) and spending the money you save on wheels? I assure you, the bike won't be the limiting factor unless you're planning on TTing with it.

Mechanical shifting?! In 1990 we used to ride some crits here in Germany with a one-geared track bike, but with rim brakes. On a flat race course like the one shown in the video, you don't need gears. As the bottom bracket is slightly higher on track frames than on road frames, it is easier to pedal through bends and accelerate out of bends earlier.

@@NorCalCycling I have one of each, I think I like the rim brakes slightly more. Hard to say what you mean by "overall", but the rim brake bike (Tarmac SL) is a lot cheaper and lighter - like, over a pound lighter - than the disc (Emonda SL). I know weight doesn't make the biggest difference in speed but you can definitely feel the difference in just ride feel. Most of the time the bottle neck in stopping distance for both isn't really the brakes at all, it's the tires. Like with both of them I never just grab the brakes as hard as I can because I'd skid all over the place, so having more braking power doesn't really matter. You can fit bigger tires with the discs to help with this, but they also make rim brakes with more clearance, I'm just not running them. The rim brakes are just easier to work on, cheaper to maintenance, and lighter. Idk, it seems situation-dependent at best if discs are better, I'm kind of disappointed more bike reviewer/influencers/whatever are so one-sided on it, I think it'd be really nice for there to be more high-end rim-brake options because I think there's still a lot of people who would find them a better option. Even Poggi was using them in the mountains when he had the choice. Could be an interesting video topic for you in the future.

@@NorCalCycling I will say I like not having to worry about rim wear in mucky conditions and that I can choose what size disc to use/switch it up front and back so there's definitely some reasons to go disc. I'm definitely not arguing they should just go away, just that there should be more options.

Rim brakes are bad then right? Apart from that crash you had a few years ago Jeff. If you were on rim brakes that crash didn't happen. There's positives and minuses to both.

I ride both. Hydro Discs are terrible when you grab at the brakes in a panic, which we all do when something happens in front of us. Look at the crash in the Tour de basque that took everyone out. Hydro discs really didn't help there everyone slid out or had to go straight on and end up in the concrete ditch. I love the vids man. Made me a better rider. I just don't get the thing where we have to be for rim of disc. Rims in the dry are far better when you grab them. Discs are just a little bit too good when grab them both in a panic.

sometimes I feel bad for only using lube on my chain instead of wax cause if I crash other people get grease lightning tattoo's

If a crit racer why not purchase own bike instead of having to rely on a team? Wouldn't have to "beg" local bike shop.
