RACING THE 5K USA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP || race analysis and voiceover

I got into USAs last minute when a couple people scratched the 5k, and I decided to race it. A national championship is always a great opportunity to gain race experience and compete against the best in the country. I knew that I wasn't in peak form going in, but I wanted to test myself against a loaded field. I'm by no means satisfied with the result, but I am proud of myself for toeing the line even when I was scared. I'm hoping that the next time around I will be less timid when the big move is made.

It was really fun seeing you run on national TV again. My analysis: you were less than four seconds behind the reigning NCAA 5K champion (Tuohy) who set national records in high school; 23 seconds behind Schweizer who ran in two distance events in the Olympics and whose PR is 14:26; 3 seconds AHEAD of Purrier-St. Pierre who was 11th in Doha. The heat made the times irrelevant but by comparison with the others I think you did well. Think where you will be next year at this time when it will be only one year until the Olympics.

I watched this race. It was really a "Who's Who" for the 5K. You had a Great race and do not be so hard on yourself. This was an all star event. Look who you ran side by side with most of the race and she is one of the best too. Heat and Humidity has always been a game changer on race day. Sometimes it works for you, sometimes it gets to you. You did great and your comeback is on track.

Thanks for the video and voiceover Allie. Fascinating to hear your thoughts. I like the tinkle of optimism shining through the disappointment at the end there. Can't wait to see you put yourself out there and take those risks you were talking about. Ask yourself what's the worst thing that could happen? You burn up but learn a lot more than you would from hanging back :)

Allie, I've been watching you and Spencer for a while now getting training pointers for my son. Please let me say this. You are an awesome runner. Your training is top notch. With this being said, Stop being so scared or so nervous before a race to the point it hampers your performance.You are ready!! Also, when you are racing, stop worrying about other racer's strategy. Don't allow the other runners to force their strategy on you. Run your race at your pace. If they pass you at the end, so be it. Leave it all on the table. Make them earn it. Make them beat your best. Good luck. Thanks for all the videos.

Know you're disappointed about the outcome because you felt you could have done better tactically. Even so, track races (and any races) always have that element. Even the fittest, fastest folks can make mistakes in a race, and that's why racing is so fun to run and to watch! Nevertheless, seems you did pretty awesome for a last-minute race against top-flight competition you were not planning to be in. Congrats! Really ticked I couldn't catch the Women's 5K on the telly-it was not aired for some reason as far as I can tell. Keep being awesome!

Even getting invited to compete at nationals is a big honor. Definitely a tactical race. You finished just behind NC State phenom Kaetlyn Touhy, who also got stuck at the back of the pack in this weird race (not something she's used to at all). But, you hung in there and finished strong and should be proud of yourself for competing at such a high level when you're clearly still buidling back up and weren't fully prepared for racing at that level. Glad you counted it as a positive, learning experience instead of getting down on yourself. Go, go, Allie O!

Wonderful voice over and recap. Nick Symmonds would have told you to change your position for the tactical race. Otherwise if you’re stuck in the back when the big move is made, just recall in your mind how Dave wottle won his 800m gold, going from last to first by keeping his head down and just moving up. Anyway, I’m sure you know all that. It was great to see you racing at the elite level again :)

1:57 not sure if Spencer was legit recognizing the disc, but Nate Sexton Firebirds are pretty valuable, in disc golf terms. There's usually a rush to buy the first runs every year. Also, it's very likely the disc's owner was out there in the field somewhere practicing his throws, and this one went wayward.

Hi Allie! Love the analysis of your race and super stoked you put yourself out there when you were not at all close to being ready for the championships!! This was, as you mentioned, great experience for you moving forward and you’ll be able to use this in the future for sure. I understand that you are disappointed by how you raced and if I may may suggest that you give yourself even more credit and try to be less disappointed in the final product of your race. From what I gather (from watching your videos) you had the 5 km race on the roads planned and then last minute went to Portland, tan 15:24 or 15:26 in terrible weather and then last minute jumped into nationals which turned out to be super slow with a massive increase in pace after a fartlek style first 3k. Looking at your splits you went 3:03 and 2:58 for your last 2k when you did not even practice that shift of gears and truly are just putting in consistent (but nothing really geared towards a racing season)! If you could try to let go of the disappointment, see the totality of your race experience and understand that what you accomplished in such a short time you’d find that it’s so much more impressive than what you are suggesting it was. You’re amazing, super talented, and with a full prep things would be very very different! Allie O you are a gift to the track world and I look forward to what’s to come . . . have fun, enjoy the heck out of your running as well as your friends and family!

Even though I'm still in highschool, I struggle with a lot of the same things during races. I always second guess myself, and as the paces hit during workouts that predict my race times predict really good things, but as soon as I get to the races I get so nervous. Although I really so love a tactical race, I'm a good sit and kicker, at the start of the bell lap I start opening up my stride and then with 200m to go I completely sprint and give it all that I've got - I can make up a lot of time and usually make a pretty big gap between myself and the person behind me.

Love your analysis and enjoyed watching you race very much. And against the best runners in the US, in a championship race, without a proper buildup in brutal heat. I say, well done. One thing I'm wondering about is that you ran seven miles at a decent clip the day before the race. I believe you said on one of your videos that this is something you always do. When I was running (years ago) I was forced to miss three days of training due to a job commitment. At the last minute I entered a 10k road race that weekend. I was worried that I had lost fitness, but instead, I felt fantastic and ran by far my best PR. I was just wondering.... you can guess the rest of this.

Yeah that’s a reasonable idea! 7 miles is my usual, but maybe I’ll try doing less!

@@allie_ostrander It might be worth a test -- an experiment -- prior to a low key event. Best of luck.

@@allie_ostrander exactly what I thought : but being a sprinter to 800m runner running a 5k's I would take the day before off or an easy 2-4 miles . But l have alot of speed compared to Endurance : but you did need more racing to get into racing shape . You obviously will improve in the next few years so I wouldn't worry about it : a good baseline to get under 15.

That was a strange race, I kind of figured it would tactical race but now that slow, lol. You did well for saying it was only your second 5k of the season. But, that tactical racing is not going to work against those Ethiopian and Kenyan girls at worlds.

You still did very well! Gained alot of knowledge and performed better then your rank going in, thats still a win :)

First thing I want to say is congratulations on your Freihofer win. I was wondering why the 5k? I thought you were a steeple chase runner?

I’m just taking a year off the steeplechase because it’s hard on the body

while watching this race i was thinking, its best to get to the front by the 3k mark bc it will pick up from there -- important to recognize or anticipate when moves might be made
@rainbowmonkMC
@rainbowmonkMC 2 года назад
so tactically, if u feel like you dont have the gear shift, then making sure you hit the front before the move happens thrn you dont have to gear up so intensely

Yeah, that’s definitely something I learned from the race!

There are minimum speed requirements on highways, there should be something like that in races. Like anyone slower than x seconds per lap (depending on distance) is automatically disqualified 😅 I’m just surprised to see how much group mindset there is in a race, not so much individual tactics

That's honestly a very interesting concept for a race!

Don't know how I missed this but then again....guess I didn't. Maybe there will be a 4 legged Pacer in the future. It looked like fun with the last lap and finish, something to build upon.

Heat did not help that befuddling pace the first few ks. Main thing is you partook in the action and can make necessary adjustments...you have time & talent on your side😉
