Yo everybody, this is my buddy Khatz and I are talking about "Racism in Japan", which we honestly don't give a fuck about. Any time we have had a misunderstanding or encountered something that seems along the lines of "racism", we usually can deal with it fairly easily. We have both experienced racism towards not being able to "get an apartment" and being "stopped by racial profiling " cops, each time has not been a as a big deal as people on the internet make it out to be (at least in our opinions, which of course are the most valid on the world wide web...bitches).
Guys, seriously, this country is great, any time you think there is "RACISM" going on, take a step back, learn Japanese fluently, live here for a couple years, be integrated into the culture before assuming "RACISM"....also stop being such little bitches.
みな、この国が大好きだ、素晴らしくにだよ。日本は最高!

I went to Japan, by myself, with only a few simple words. I was sitting in a restaurant , and a Japanese family started waving me over. I told the waiter I would go sit with them. I spent my dinner plus an hour afterward with them, The father translating for me, his wife and their daughter. After we were done, they gave me their phone number and said to call if I had any problems. Ive never even had this happen in my home country. You can find assholes anywhere, but not everyone is an asshole

Yup, well, the thing that seperates Khatz from other dudes is that he is fluent so when any shit happens he can explain it clearly to whoever it concerns.

I dislike certain things about all cultures including my own but at the end of the day you are completely right. Foreigners who want to embrace Japanese culture can do so but it doesn't mean they will embrace you back.

Thank you! This video couldn't have been more perfect(unless it was longer). I actually did want to see Khatz's and Sams opinion and experiences on this subject because many people try to blow up the situation and make it seem like its Nazi Germany all over again. Sam, we need more Khatz!!! Anyways, Sam and Khatz have to be the best combination on RU-vid! MORE, MORE! 5/5

the one thing i'd disagree with is about the word "gaijin". it does feel kind of xenophobic to refer to people that way because in my country, and in my circles of people, we never stress that someone is foreign. stressing someone's race or national origin , or just the fact they aren't from here, can be pretty rude, makes them feel like not part of the group or like they can't enjoy the culture.

Sam and Khatz are pretty chill americans and I agree what they're saying here. But they know the language and culture, thats why they assimilated pretty quickly.

i see you updated your info. well to answer your question, i'm a japanese citizen studying sociology in the states. my research is on a comparative analysis of racism in japan vs usa. a cohort of mine sent me your vid. i apologize if i came off a bit critical, i understand this is your opinion (i mean, it's youtube afterall, not some acadmic journal). i'm not here to argue, but as an foreigner living in japan, i just hope you look into things past its face value when offering advice to others.

Good video man. The crap thing is, most people have been racist at one point in their life. I think it's a life learning experience for someone that has never been racially abused to go to a foreign country and experience it. Then it makes them think twice the next time they are going to abuse someone else. And yeah, I agree that racism isn't as strong here as it is in other countries. I did get a big racial slap once. But "no ginger!" hey.

I'm from Holland(I'm half Dutch and half Vietnamese), don't speak a word Japanese(except sumimasen and arigato) and when I was Japan I didn't experience any form of racism. Actually we experienced the total opposite: we met a lot of Japanese who were very interested in our backgrounds. The Japanese were so polite, some gave us free food to try out, others gave us umbrellas when it started to rain. It might have been because we were in Tokyo instead of some small village, but still. continued

Had fun at some of the comments! XD I'm gonna do that the next time I'm there "Why is mine smaller than the rest? Is it cuz I'm a gaijin? >:[" Hehe! Though one minor correction: Japans economy is in SHIT at the moment, even compared to many other countries.

I think xenophobia rather than racism is the issue for Japan. The fact that roughly 99% of the people living in Japan are Japanese says something about how the 鎖国 policy of the Edo Period has not been fully abolished.

continued... Compared to those polite people practically everybody from elsewhere over the world is noisy and rude. So I can understand why they have a no-gaijin policy in some of their peaceful and quiet onsens. And even if that's racism, that would be my preferred racism to encounter: not able to soak into hot water instead of being beaten to death like in other places on the world. Japan is a wonderful country and I can't wait to visit it again.
@vmbo
@vmbo 15 лет назад
I think there are a lot of benefits of being a foreigner in Japan. You can get away with pretty much everything, because they don't expect you to behave like a perfect Japanese citizen with all their small unwritten rules/uses. You could always get away with: *oops, I didn't know that, I'm just a dumb gaijin and didn't mean to do any harm :D*. While if you were a fullblood Japanese, they probably would expect you to act properly like any other Japanese.

I also think the 'racism' some experience is caused a lot of times by shyness/emotional insecurity because a lot of Japanese people simply don't speak English and thus don't know how to deal with foreigners. So with these policies they save their face because they can't embarrass themselves or their costumers.

I have to agree with Channei here. The Japanese can be very xenophobic and ethnocentric. As far as racism, because the numbers of racially different peoples in Japan is so small in percentage terms, they've never really had to confront potential racist issues similar multicultural societies like the US. If the African population in Japan shot up to 5 or 10%, they might not be quite as "accepting". Great video though. I agree, don't "look" for trouble. Accept Japan & enjoy what it has to offer.

I think people are taking their american mentality and applying that to what they see in japan. You dont have the same rights and freedoms that one has in the states or other western nations. and like they're saying sometimes people go out of their way to find racism . . . go there with an open mind, and if something doesnt go the way you think it should've went, just live your life, dont dwell on it for to long you'll miss the really good stuff thats around you

Dude - you misunderstand me - I have found Japanese people to very accepting - the point is that because of its geography and other factors - it is somewhat removed from the rest of the world. The issue they face is more of "otherness" rather than "race" . I am saying the question to ask is whether or not there is xenophobia rather than racism.

I like how laid back you guys are, but you know, it is a lot of racism. Let`s take what you were saying after they refused to give you an apartment. They said, 申し訳ありません blah blah, all they are doing is giving you 建て前 bullshit. I don`t mind the word 外人, and most Japanese do not mean any harm by it, but that doesn`t make it correct.

I would have done the same thing if I had the knowledge behind it. Speaking in regards about Daibito But we are so scary to them and, yes, they think they are better than us. But they are not a real threat, so say something smart ass and walk away, I guess or take the fuckers to court and expose them to the rest of the world . And yes the way they do things are backward ass. LOL. I love the safe aspect with my kids concern. Yes, behave lets not screw up the awesome thing we have here.
