As an operator for over 30 years I have to say "Very good tips" I would like to add something for you to ponder on. You call "Down on the Hook". I call and would much prefer to hear "Hook Down". My reason is threefold. • First is knowing movement before direction allows me to know which lever then which way I am pushing it. The other way the brain can't start processing till signal is complete. • Second is it gets rid of "On The" unnecessary jargon same as use of Mate, Cuz or Del. All I want to hear is clear precise signals, keep the gossip for a quite time. • Finally as you mention in pressing radio late, if partial signal is received you have better chance of being confident you got the signal intended "ew" (Slew), "ook" (Hook) or "ib" (Jib) followed by direction works better than the other way. Eliminating operator from asking for a repeat. Just my thoughts, once again good work.
Thanks for your comment its nice to know someonce else has thought deeply about this.Your first reason i can agree with as long as they push the button in first before speaking so you get the whole message ive actually thought that before but it left my mind when doing the video.The second reason yes you could get rid of the "on the". The name calling "Mate", "Cuz" or Name actually have a soothing affect, scientists have done studies that if you address a person who is stressed out or angry by there name often it calms them down 80% quicker than without.Also adding in words before the actual commands makes the operator smoother for this reason, have you ever had a rigger who just blurts the commands out in a instant "STOP!!" out of know were everytime with no warning? it puts me on edge because the second i hear the radio click over my brains tells me to stop pulling the lever and makes me hesistate in my operations always thinking at any point i have to stop because hes gives me no warning, it takes all the smoothness out of the operation. I find if you wean him into the next command or into the stop by added some words before the actual command itself the overall operations are alot smoother.Third reason yes thanks bundy maybe i could send you drafts before adding a new video
Always remember the British Army Acronym C.L.A.P for radio procedure and you won't go wrong.Clear,Loud,As an order,With pauses. Also when slewing the crane i find "prepare to stop" followed by "stop" keeps the load smooth and the operator can bring the slew and load to a controlled stop. When lowering the load to grade inform the operator distance in half a metre incriments when your about 3 metres off the floor this puts a lot of confidence in the crane op.
Good tips and very relevant info. A great job you are doing because every lift, crane, operator and site is different. You never stop learning in that industry. A good dogman is a lazy one...that is he is smart enough to think it through prior, which really means the best approach to a lift is the easiest method, never ignore any part involved to always ensure safe and secure factors.

I've been around the block and seeing ya vid and then reading tHe comments, well it just gives me the warm and fuzzys, I deal with smaller residential builds where a proper understanding of English is rare let alone rigging skills. I have a standard speall I conduct to the radio guy each time which I elect based displayed intelligence among the available crew within the 20min setup. If I had to say what was the one thing most seem to struggle with, it would be speaking before hitting the button, I think that's where my warm and fuzzys climaxed in your vid. Cool video, well done
handsignal, whistle or two way radios...most operators would want the two way for obvious reasons ( accuracy and Ive heard some weird whistles esp slew rights and seen some very unusual hand signals...like I hate the closed fist for stop) so if there are radios always use them (Keep in mind sun in the eyes or closed crane cabin) and alway manage your batteries and havea back up on charge. I have a acme thunderer whistle handy and hanging around my neck ( the smaller ones are better heard over jack hammering and concrete vibrators) Just a few tips from a Trainer, Assessor, All Cranes Operator, Rigger Dogman etc... since 1978.
Bro i'm still loving your vids and coming back. Big question, how do you wear your radio when you are in and out of harnesses and up and down ladders and on and off roofs? Walking all over the place. Actually just read the other comment, re scientific research does claim your favourite word is hearing your first name. I think on site its totally irrelevant. More so I'm inclined to confirm if the operator is ready by giving a mic click (lets him put ddown his mag, book, water or get him ready, a bit like a conductor tapping his stick. If I heard someone call me Cuz I'd let him know asap and to mate too. Its not a quality you need to have to establish a repaul with communication. Up hook or hook up doesnt matter to a c o its not a piano in C minor. More so take the weight...as he can see it and if not and in the blind he can feel it and see the weight guage. Up steady, you've got it... steady on the hook, let me just check it underneath ( an operator also if blind would like toknow whats on the hòok e.g. empty brick cage, kibble, long reobar, panels, ply. A cage can weigh 200kg a kibble full 2,400 kg
not true and from it... when you engage the microphone the operztor will here you are on air and be prepared for your call, it maybe "keep coming" or keep slewing left on your way down. Not stop then another one movement at a time.
