RADIO MASTER TX16S | GIMBAL DEFECT? CHECK YOU CALIBRATE CORRECTLY.

I found a hardware /software issue on the radio master tx16s in relation to how you calibrate.
This is a mild mechanical defect that results in a non equal ratio when moving the sticks.
Long and short..
If you calibrate by moving your gimbals to the opposing corners.. you will induce a display error within opentx.
This is because the corners actually deliver 1% to 2% more range than the mid points of the gimbal.
Net result.. you will end up with an async calibration.
To avoid the issue - only move pure vertical and pure horizontal while calibrating your sticks.
Curiously the issue only ever occurs in one direction on all the gimbals I have tested.

Just came accross this video i had taken radio apart and was going to take hall gimble out and dremel the stopper on gimble so throttle pitch would go to 100% and i would have 0 degree at true center stick marker lines. Then i thought got to be easier way AHA AHA found this video thank you so much you saved me a lot of work

Hello, this is not a defect. Please calibrate your radio when its new. We recommend all users calibrate their radios as instructed in Chapter 3 Page 20 under the "First Boot" instructions. Also please calibrate the radio again if you adjust spring tension or open the case to perform any modifications or adjustments etc

Out of interest.. The manual while telling you to calibrate does not actually specifically say not to go to the corners during calibration. You will find many many users will move to all corners when calibrating.

I have done this calibration 20-30 times but my sticks in full corner deflection read 95. Side to side they read 100 but corners are 95-97. This does not happen on my jumper T16 radio gimbals. I would definitely say it’s some type of defect.

Hello Radiomaster, I’ve encountered a similar problem, but it was much more exaggerated. Only with the ailerons, I would get 68% in one direction, 92% in the other, and 100% in the corners. My weight was set to 100, and I didn’t have the problem before adding some mixes. It occurred while adding mixes, and stayed after deleting my mixes. Will try to recalibrate, but concerned it could happen in flight.

Hey, thanks for this. I was going crazy using my timer (set to start when I moved my throttle) and trying to reset it. It would reset but then start counting immediately with my throttle all the way down. This has taken care of the problem (and probably another one I was having). Thanks again!

Interesting, but the least of my worries with hall effect gimbals. I have a condition where the 'input' signal is different every time I switch on. Move the stick and the endpoints change. I liked potentiometers much better.

@sascha7133

@@RTRCTV Hi Rob, I have an estimated guess what happens there: If you move the gimbal in one direction it moves a small magnet and this movement is seen by the Hall effect sensor of the other axis as well. Just a little bit. I had issues with small movements around the center in case of presence big pieces of steel. One example situation is flying while leaning on the car. Had these effects with compass based head trackers as well. Could solve this just with increasing distance to the car. Some Hall effect gimbals are more prone to disturbances of external magnetic fields than others.
@RTRCTV
@RTRCTV 4 года назад
Guess it's possible. Other option is that the Gimbals are not 100% spherical.. But slightly more oval in size. This could just be a small error in the moulding. Probably only a micrometer out!

Thanks for the tip. The problem with most of us, especially me, is that we don’t tend to read the manual and when something doesn’t behave the way we are accustomed to, we assume that there’s something wrong with the software or hardware! I do have a question, and that is, how do you remove the joysticks? Mine seem to screwed on so tight that I’m afraid that if I put too much torque that I will damage the gimbals!
@RTRCTV
@RTRCTV 4 года назад
Hey.. No issue. My video resulted in the manual being updated to show the tight way :) Gimbals stick ends just unscrew. No idea why yours are so tight!
@samavella8831
@samavella8831 4 года назад
Rob Thomson FPV Thanks for getting back to me. I managed to unscrew the sticks very carefully and steady with pliers! I did find that the steak threads are not the same size as those for the Jumper T16. They seem to be thicker, so people have to be careful when they order replacement ones.
@EliteFpv
@EliteFpv 4 года назад
There is an Allen screw that locks the stick on shaft. First loosed the Allen screw in the top of the sick then the stick will twist freely Vw/ccw to adjust height then once you reach desired height, tighten Allen screw back up to lock in place.

Damn was really hoping for a solution to my problem but this isnt it.. my calibration drifts off over a short amount of time.. within hours of calibration the centerpoints go from 1500 to either 1560/1440 or there about and it makes my quad dip hard whenever i let go of the stick.. not sure if anyone else had this issue but im going crazy trying to get this solved

Running edgetx on mine and I simply can't get the sliders to calibrate at least one of the sliders on each side of radio is ALWAYS off center. I have same issue with sticks not going 100 -100 as well. This is a brand new radio and I may be asking for a refund. Go back to my trusty Qx7.

Manual has been updated to reflect the info provided in the video.. So positive all round.

Reason for this problem.... We are being told that these are high quality stick and gimbals... In reality they are very inexpensively made. They are not as precision as they could be... Proof of this is in the very inexpensive cost of this radio ... Period! In concept for the money this is a good value for dollar spent...to bring this radio up to high quality it would cost us another $150.00 to $200. bucks. Just to start to get close to what it could be. For the money I like it. Oh and calibrate the gimbals according to manufactures directions.
@raknin
@raknin 4 года назад
This is not a problem. The problem is that you do not do the calibration according to right procedure. Thats all.
@RTRCTV
@RTRCTV 4 года назад
Totally.. its a procedure to do right. However.... The same issue does not exist on frsky radios; jumper t16 etc... End of day.. there is a minor mechanical defect in the alignments - but easy to resolve via calibration.

Not really. There is clearly an issue. The issue occurs of you do not follow a very specific and slightly non standard calibration routine. I will take the fact that radiomaster are updating their manual to reflect my findings that the issue exists.
