Hey everyone! Here is another great video from Chicagoland of action on the BNSF Racetrack in Naperville and in West Chicago, the junction of the former Chicago & North Western mainline and the Elgin, Joliet, and Eastern mainline. This junction is now operated by Union Pacific and Canadian National. In addition, this was the first time I visited both places, and they certainly did not disappoint.
The day starts of in Naperville where we see a local and a BNSF freight train with eight units, six of them CSX, shortly after followed by the eastbound Illinois Zephyr on its way to Chicago from Galesburg. Unfortunately, there was track maintenance for BNSF that morning, and the only trains that would run during the maintenance were the Metra trains to and from Chicago. So, I decided to go to West Chicago for a bit.
West Chicago pretty great, as you will see, there was an abundance of freight trains from Union Pacific, a few Metra trains, and a Canadian National oil train. However, I did want to return to Naperville to see at least one Amtrak train. With much luck, I not only saw one Amtrak train (the westbound California Zephyr), but four Amtrak trains (both Southwest Chiefs and the eastbound California Zephyr), as well as the Amtrak Phase III Heritage Unit, a BNSF Warbonnet, and the Norfolk Southern Bar Code Unit. Traffic for BNSF did indeed pick up in the afternoon and I was able to see a great number of trains in Naperville after all.
Over all, it was an exciting day of railfanning and an unforgettable first time in both places. Hope you enjoy the video!
