The old wheel operated level crossing at Clonsilla station in Dublin, Ireland. Irish Rail 22000 class DMU intercity train number 22344 heads westbound through the crossing on it's way to Sligo. Thank you for watching. Please comment, like and subscribe 👍

I wonder how many others noticed the worker manually cranking the gates closed and open through the window in the upper left. I wonder how many didn't even realize it was a manual crossing.

Interlocking gates were common in Melbourne. One fascinating one mathematically was at Cheltenham where Charman road crossed at an approx 30 degree angle and the gates were different lengths and they fitted perfectly open or closed. If one gate was too long they would hit in the middle. At the time I was studing the maths of parallel lines and the interplay between all the angles and this was a fascinating real world example of geometry.

@@countrabricksbuildcraze8916 I don’t live in Cheltenham so I didn’t see the gates go. The Wiki says 1972. I used to go to Cheltenham to attend coaching classes arranged by the Freemasons. I also caught the bus to Southland or it was a 20 minute walk.
@darylcheshire1618
@darylcheshire1618 2 года назад
Another fascinating story of railway gates in Melbourne is the Upfield Line which between Brunswick and Coburg had a lot of roads that crossed the tracks close together and all with wooden gates. The thing was the line was slated for closure by a sucession of governments so no money was spent on upgrading the crossings until relatively recently. Some crossings were closed but the gates are statically preserved together with their little cabins. Now the line has had the level crossing removals applied and some of the railway is elevated.

I lived in Bon beach around 1975 . Does anyone remember the clock traffic lights on the way to Frankston. It was a clock that went around from red to green , to yellow. It was so long ago I don't remember the gates at Cheltenham. But I do remember the red trains that the doors open outwards on the way to Montmorency.
@darylcheshire1618
@darylcheshire1618 2 года назад
@@c.a.marsupial.1282 I remember the clock traffic lights at Aspendale. They are preserved in Bicentennial Park at Chelsea. The trains with outward opening doors were called dogboxes or doggies. They were on other lines so I never travelled on any except the Electrail preserved set. I was intriqued by the train whistle which was a tube type whistle. It also had the same air horn of the Taits.

A fascinating arrangement, with the signalman faintly visible up in the box turning a huge crank to operate the gates. How old is it? The hand crank, and the shafts and linkages it must require all smack of 19th Century tech, but the box, the gates, and the need for gates at a RR crossing seem more like something from the Thirties. Plus, in the 19th Century, the signalman would have had to come out and wave a red flag rather than stay dry in his box and turn a crank.

Was going to say this makes way more sense than the vertical gates we have in Aus (and the UK too), as it actually prevents tresspassing onto the tracks as well as protecting traffic. Also helps that the train driver can clearly see if the gates have failed and are open too - prob too late to stop but at least they can start to brake and lean on the horn to warn people.

Wish we had barriers like that back in August 2020 when a man driving a pickup truck at night in Oxnard, California mistakenly turned onto railroad tracks at a grade crossing. The vehicle got stuck and was hit by a passenger train. Fortunately the truck driver escaped in time and survived.

@@irelandbloke It sounds to me like they mean the driver turned onto the tracks while the road was open then got stuck in the track ballast or something. Presumably the driver mistook it for a crossroads somehow, I guess the driver was unfamiliar with the area. Especially considering this apparently happened at night it is conceivable the driver was too focused on looking for their turn and missed the signs indicating that it was a rail crossing not the road intersection they were expecting.

Love the old world gates and great to see survivors. Around here, all we have are those dreadful continental barriers. A set of similar gates were removed around here as it was said they could not fabricate a part for the mechanism- and they were listed gates too! Here's me thinking, they can construct three bridges over the Firth of Forth and send men to the moon. Must be some mechanisms in the old style gates!

@OntarioTrafficMan
@OntarioTrafficMan 2 года назад
