About this Channel:
This channel chronicles my journey as a sheep farmer from the very beginning. My primary occupation is in business management. In 2020, I discovered the principles of regenerative agriculture and embarked on a journey with the end goal of building a profitable small farm on 23 acres by 2027. Thank you for joining the journey!

I’m in Louisiana. Cajun Milk Cows. I raise miniature milk cows on 26 acres, pasture only with rotational grazing.

Does the full tour go over what kind of forage she’s grazing in the south? I’m in alabama so very interested in hearing what varieties of warm grasses her sheep will actually eat

Great interview! We run about 300-340 hair sheep in Oklahoma. We moved from cattle to sheep because they are so much more profitable and easier to take care of.

We will be moving back to Louisiana in a little over a year. We plan to raise Gulf Coast sheep for breeding stock and for meat. They have a mild flavor meat and are extremely parasite and hoof disease resistant. They can be used to introduce these traits in other breeds. Also another benefit to the breed is that they can be sheared for wool, but don't need to be. They will shed every year.

I just finished the 1 hour video. So much info. Great interview, but if I can add some constructive feedback, a good noise canceling mic will make a huge difference in the quality of videos like that. I have an auditory processing disorder and the constant crying of the kid, squeaky chair, people talking in the background made it very difficult to hear Roberta. I have 6 kids so the little one crying didn't bother me but it was very distracting

Sheep are nice, I love to eat lamb, but goats are bringing a better $$ at market. I think I will stick to goat as my money maker, but I would like to raise a few sheep for my own use. And I agree, can't do this with out a good LGD!

Anyone got any more info on the hoof rot. I’d be kickin it with our sheep if I could get a handle on it. I know it’s a problem for a lot of producers but there isn’t much info out there.

The Rams should not be kept separate but should graze with the Bulls. If the Bulls are being introduced to the Herd for two months move the Rams with them. The Bulls will scare off most Coyotes. That way the Rams are either protected by Bulls or during mating season with the flock by Livestock Guardian Dogs. Before lambing season walk the perimeter of your property and urine on the fence posts and let off fireworks or a shotgun shell or two. Yes, collect your human urine and mark your fence posts; this is something Coyotes understand.

That was a very informative and interesting video (I did watch the one hour video). Thank you for that. I do have one question. In cold weather situations where you might prefer to pen the sheep at night from time to time, are there best practices for preventing foot rot and other hoof issues from spreading in the herd?
@theShepherdess
@theShepherdess 10 месяцев назад
Great question! Keeping the pen floor dry with junk hay works for me!
