Just thought I'd share this. I raised rabbits for meat and show for over 20 years. We also had chickens, ducks, geese and tried pheasants. Those were more work than they were worth. One time a feather from one of the birds ended up in one of the buck cages. I never saw an animal, especially a rabbit, have that much fun with a feather. That buck drug it around, threw it over his head, tossed it every which way. He'd shake it so it slapped his sides, raked it across the cage wires making that flapping sound of a card on a bike tire spokes. He did this for hours on days until the feather disintegrated. I gave him another of the same color/size. Nope. It was something about that specific feather. Cheers.

Yes rabbits can be comical too! I had a white doe named Snowball who would stick her head in an empty water can & hop around until it fell off. Sometimes she would stick her head in again & do the same thing over, even jumping up onto her bedding box with it still on her head! 😂😂😂 (For those of you who might think it was just because the water was gone, not so, she would sometimes purposefully dump the water out so she could parade around!)

Oh and my elop babies I did not have foster possibly at the time. My doe had a hard time with 7! Her second litter she had 13. I “shelved” the babies every day. I took out the best fed then placed in a box literally away from mom. Then let the babies who were less fed be fed first then put back the shelved group. My doe would go back and second time feed them!! Rabbits only feed once a day. But it worked with big litters.

It is great to see the kids actively involved in homestead chores. Don't give up on quail yet, they look like a very productive animal for a small homestead. I am considering going with quail over chickens as first animals to our homestead, with rabbits second. The quail just seem to be a choice to be considered with smaller space needed, fast growing, quicker to maturity and laying of eggs or to be harvested for meat. Thank you and your son for taking us along for chores.

Ordered my corn seed 😉 Fall is my favorite time of year, we got 3 days 😱. It snowed on Halloween, it snowed on my birthday Monday. White Christmases are rare in NE Kansas. Usually the cold and snowy part of our winters start in January 😐. Guess the tornado did he a favor by knocking down all those trees, we are going to need all that extra firewood. Off to the reptile expo this afternoon. Now that I'm older I find new ways to make my hubby squirm for my birthday day out. He's terrified of snakes lol. Question... I am starting to raise rabbits (Rex breeding pair and a NZ bred to our Rex) but we heard from another breeder that using the tractor and letting our rabbits graze can give them worms before we harvest them. Have you ever had an issue with anything like that?
@GoodSimpleLiving
@GoodSimpleLiving 4 года назад
Thank you, that's a very good question. So no we have never had any worms in our growouts, or our breeders, but they only graze our yard. Wild rabbits can pick up worms, especially in the warmer months, if they are grazing where wild animals graze, and poop. Some parasites can come from the ground itself, but most are passed from animal to animal by eating off the forest ground. Keep the ground fresh, and move them 1 or 2 times a day. A rabbit will chew the grass to nothing, and get into the soil if you don't make sure they have plenty of grass to graze on. I hope that answers your question... basically keep them on fresh grass, and move often so they only eat the top half of the grass, and don't get into the soil. Don't tractor them where wild animals eat like in a forest.

Hey ive got a question about the bunnies after you ween them off the Doe... Can you put the fryers all in one larger cage together until they reach weight??? I'll have 3 doe's and I was wondering if there were any issues with the babies being in 1 large cage together. They would also be very close in age
@GoodSimpleLiving

That is what we do. We move weaned kits to lawn tractors, and raise them together on pasture.

Great videos. A few questions - for 4-H, do you need a pedigree for them, or a way to assure the buyer that they are purebred? When I buy a doe or buck from Craigslist, I feel like I can't be 100% sure that the rabbit really is whatever breed the ad listed, so I would have a hard time promising someone that the kits were 100% pure. Also, do you double up any of your (nonlactating) breeding rabbits, or do they always have their own cages?
@GoodSimpleLiving
@GoodSimpleLiving 4 года назад
We keep all breeders separated, but you can double up if hutches are large enough. 4H does not require a pedigree, but the kids are pretty good at knowing what to look for with purebred rabbits. Rex are easier, because of the curly whiskers, and the plush coat. If you mix them you loose those traits.
@paytonasher06
@paytonasher06 4 года назад
Do you know if it would be hard to do 4-H with a rex because they are a bit bigger? I am thinking I want to get a mini rex since I have heard that they have great personalities and coats just like the standards, but are, of course mini. Do you know anything about the mini rex breed? Also yet another great, informative video!

I'm here in Eastern Iowa and I'd love to try raising meat rabbits, I'm just worried about the harsh winters we have. Last winter we had -30 temperatures and wind chills near -60. Are putting your rabbits in a tractor a must? Also, how do you sustain them in the winter? And are some breeds built better for extreme cold? Alot of questions, I know! Great video.
@GoodSimpleLiving
@GoodSimpleLiving 4 года назад
Hi Roy, thank you for your questions. Yes there are more cold hardy breeds, and in extreme temps I would move them to a garage, greenhouse, or barn to get them out of any wind or damp conditions. Rabbits are very cold hardy, it's heat that will get them. I would not breed in the winter however, kits will not fair well in anything below 20 degrees. Breed fall, summer, and spring, and move breeders out of weather in winter. It can be done! A tractor is not a must, just cuts down on feed costs, and allows them some freedom.

Great job guys! One thing i will suggest is that you could hold the NZ doe in the cage so she can't bite or move and let the buck breed her. Just grab her scruff and put her in the center of the cage. That sure is disappointing.😔 Glad to see the quail doing good!😉

So we are new to this, working on finishing up our hutches and I think I have watched all of your videos. I greatly appreciate your videos and how explanatory you are. I have a question. We live in Florida and everyone who has rabbits here says they need go be processed at 8 weeks and that makes it not worth raising for meat. However, I see you process much later than that. How did you decided when to process and is it different from breed to breed?
@GoodSimpleLiving
@GoodSimpleLiving 4 года назад
It varies from breed to breed. A larger breed NZ or a meat cross may be ready more around 10 weeks, but you won't get good hide quality at that age. We process at 15 weeks so we get a good amount of meat, and nice hides. Why would anything after 8 weeks not be worth it to them? If you can raise your growouts on pasture they are very cost effective, even at 15 weeks. We are at 11 weeks now, and have spent $2 per rabbit to get them to this point.

Ok, so we clearly feed ours wayyyy to much feed. Is there a specific reason you only feed 1 cup and 1/2 cup? Mine don’t seem super fat, and we free feed them. I assume it’s to save cost? Or is there a difference in the meat to fat ratio? We noticed a little fat on ours we harvested recently, but not a lot. I wish I had grass and could do a tractor setup.
@GoodSimpleLiving
@GoodSimpleLiving 4 года назад
We basically free feed growouts, but not breeders. You want to limit the pellets on breeders, because even if they don't look fat, the fat will surround their organs, and lead to infertility or small litters. We do 1/2 cup for bredders unless pregnant or nursing, and they get a cup. They get unlimited timothy or just grass hay, but not pellets. Growouts get 1 cup pellets, because the goal is grow fast, and they get unlimited hay, and grass to graze on. With no grass to tractor on just give them hay to graze on. Field hay is great if you don't buy timothy.

A small dewlap on the Standard Rex is actually quite normal, and still permissible for showing. Some breeds are allowed it, because they are quite common with the breed, and others do not allow for it for show standards. The French Lop and the Rex (Standard size) are both allowed it since it's so common for the breed.

Wow that would have been scary with the doe going after your buck. Glad he didn’t mount backwards like younger bucks tend to. Quick question on breeding window. Do we have 24 hours to complete a breeding attempt? I put the doe in with the buck last evening and she was not receptive. I waited a few hours and tried again. This time she was receptive to one fall off. New buck though and I’m not sure he didn’t aim too high. I want to try for another fall off in that 24 hour window but I was told you could possibly get a double pregnancy that could kill the doe? Can you confirm please? Excellent job on the chores btw, lots of responsibility there, Hat’s off.

They are technically in heat al but 5 days a month, so chances are they are good to go, but you can tell if they aren't into it if they tuck their tail, and don't allow the buck a fall off.
