Rakim recently sat down for a live edition of The Touré Show, and in this clip he explains what it was like recording "Eric B for President" in Marley Marl's house when he was just 17.
He revealed that it was a nerve-racking process because he respected them so much, but he wanted Rakim to be more "amped up" when he rapped. After the song's success, Marley Marl admitting to Rakim that he understood what he was going for when they recorded the track. To hear more, including a "laid back" version of "Paid in Full," hit the above clip.

1986-88 was CRAZY!!! Cats who were just coming up at the time was incredible!! Rakim, Krs-One, BDK, Kool G Rap, Chuck D, Just-Ice, Biz Markie to name a few, but also MY favorites.A native NYer, but fortunate to be stationed in Delaware at the time so I was able to hear what Philly was doing as well as the DC Go-GO scene.Philly had Schoolly D, Steady B & Cool C ( Hilltop Hustlers), 3 Times Dope,Jazzy Jeff, Fresh Prince & Ready Rock C, Cash Money and others.Go-Go: Chuck Brown(" Run Joe"!!!!),Trouble, Junkyard Band, NE Groovers etc...As you get older you realize how fortunate you were to have witnessed first hand all this incredible talent with different styles/genres of music.And sometimes experience it LIVE!!! Ahhh the memories!! When Rakim came out it was like he was rookie of the year!!! Nobody had ever heard that style.Just cool never in a hurry." I'll take 7 MC's put em in a line, and add 7 more brothers who think they can rhyme, well it'll take 7 more before I go for mine, now that's 21 MC's ate up at the same time"...." Thought I was a donut, you tried to glaze me"...were the most quoted words back then.

saw him live in the 80s decade, right after the 1st release, with LL , who already was a very big name, and Public Enemy who also had their debut album just out and it was clear history was in the making......... BEST decade ever...when it was all true and dope, new times are pissy...

@MultiMrMiles
@MultiMrMiles 6 лет назад
totally, it was the time of the wisle crowd, so all were using their whisle, LL had his 2 djs...it was very hard, the beats....crazy really...it was also back than a different crowd, more rugged and rough, people getting robbed of their tickets and shit like that... rap was a mans game, and the people showing up were in that line...But more important, the energy and atmosphere was so special...like i stated...it was like you were feeling something special in rapmusic was lifting off, al those big names entering the platform and years of legendary albums ahead. Public Enemy was just hardly known at that time. I saw Rakim again in the early 90s performing along with Chubb Rock and some other names, but forgot who lol.
@BigBrotherBeat
@BigBrotherBeat 6 лет назад
I also saw them in the 80's, 1987 to be exact, at the Jaap Edenhal in Amsterdam. That was the 87 Def Jam Tour, with LL, P.E and Eric B & Rakim, legendary, still got my ticket. You are correct about the whistles, I remember LL sayin, "whistle posse, my posse!" Co-sign @ the the energy and atmosphere, "Hip Hop used to be so thick in the air". The 90's tour, also in Amsterdam, was Eric B & Rakim, Chubb Rock and Main Source (without Large Professor, cause he had just left the group. Mikey D from the L.A Posse replaced him). The last time I saw Rakim perform, was in 2011, at the Monsters of Rap Festival in Germany.

Butcher Chop you clearly have not seen the youtube comments I seen. When you say Pac means a lot to many people, this shows me the brainwashing and weak minded of society. The worshipping of celebrities. 2pac means more to people than Malcolm X and I find this sad and pathetic! Furthermore, most Pac fans were not fans of his until his 4th album his first on Death Row. Most of them will not admit this. I say this because his first 3 political content actually dropping knowledge on people. Since most black people are morons, they glorify him for violent rap instead of his positive music. Not all Pac fans but many. Plus nobody wants to admit Hit em up was responsible for Biggie's death! Not one rapper swill say this publically!

People born in the 90's and 2000's are stupid and the strangest generation to date. Now imagine when they have kids?

This will ALWAYS be retarded to assume they don't know older music because they're born post 1999... Lots of niggas from the 80's just might've idk... NOT LIKED THE INTERVIEW??

Your favorite commercial rapper favorite MC! There's no wonder why at the end of Tupac song .... (which was a contribution to the old school.... and who I considered an MC when he wasn't playing both sides of the fence) recited Rakim words ..... ' I came through the door I said it before' and then at the very end he says..... ttthat was my sss***! Peace to Ra and RIP Tupac.!

Even though I’ve heard this story straight from the man himself, it never gets old hearing it again. Artists these days have no idea of what some of us went through back then just to become who we are today!

Vlad is hate proof for a while, considering he interviewed Rakim the master. Since he uploaded a series of interviews, the rules are: upon each upload of a Rakim interview video, Vlad shall received no hate for a full 48 hours after that. The first of the 48 hours has begun. People can keep track of the hours based on the time of my comment.

As a teenager, growing up in the late-90s and early-00s, I gravitated toward what I perceived as the forefathers of Hip Hop. It's like going into a new barbershop for the first time, if you're smart you're looking for the oldest barber in the shop. Rakim is a fucking wizard with words, nobody tells stories like him, nobody can rhyme like him, nobody is a s cool as him... I can go on. True indeed, this guy is a fucking Hip Hop icon! However, I'm a little perturbed that my guy is always rocking that strip mall, ground floor kiosk jewelry. 😕

I remember reading an interview with MC Shan saying that every time Rakim was busting a rhyme, him & Marley Marl would go on the side of the wall and laugh. This brother turned out to be the most influential & gifted MC the world ever witnessed. He definitely would be the first to be placed on the Mount Rushmore of Hip Hop. Salute to the 18th letter the God MC RakimAllah

Asking him to spit right off the bat was kind of silly to me. The God ain't there to perform he's there to be interviewed.

He’s my favorite since he doesn’t rap fake gangsta garbage or fake a lifestyle he doesn’t live, he 100% raw and real to the core about his life and in his music.
