I also live in CA, Santa Cruz you should host a meet some time to let local pilots can say what's up. I want to mod a van on a budget, like find one you can stand in with no engine and try to mod it for electric conversion- probably 5-8 years from now or something. :)

best way to insulate your van is using sheep wool. other insulating materials tend to hold the moisture in them (and people spread a LOT of moisture sitting. working or sleeping in a van just by breathing) and your van will start rusting from the inside out. sheep wool repels the moisture and makes it go away. it is used almost always in old VW busses since they attract rust more than anything and the wool has proven itself over and over in the vw camper scene
I needed something bigger that I can put in a rear bench for the kids and the Promaster has straighter walls so you get more space the other curve in to much towards the top
