Ram TRX driveshaft CLUNK THUD fix!

This annoying thud started at about 1500 miles on my 2021 Ram TRX. When you come to a stop, then take off, it would feel like someone tapped into the back of you. Well, the fix seems to be the slip splines need to be lubed better in the rear driveshaft.

Update - took it to my local mechanic, he removed the driveshaft and lubed the part. $70 and 45 minutes later the thump is gone! Thanks again for the info. Would have taken a day at the dealership IF they did it correctly. We’ll worth the $70. Thanks again for presenting and solving the issue. Your right - I t does feel much better over bumps etc. Nice work.

Thanks so much for the info! I thought maybe some bolts missing from swing arms or similar. Mine started at about 1,000 miles and is quite annoying. I don’t even drive it hard as it is a daily driver. Had it about a month now with 2,600 miles (a long range family vacation). According to the truck I am averaging 14.3 MPG (that should tell you I don’t drive it hard). I’ll use your info when I go get my first oil change. Thanks again and spot on!! Love the truck. Speak softy and carry a big stick…..

Haha you’re welcome. Yeah mine started around 1800 miles if I remember correctly. I kept thinking, man I don’t remember it doing this before. OH! Also, it caused it to ride a little harsher over typical expansion joint type cracks it the road. I think it just caused it to bind enough to send that through the whole truck. Good luck!
@marksouthard1582

Great video. I had mine in for my free oil change and asked the tech to look at it. Of course the tech couldn’t find the issue (even though I specifically said grease the slip yoke in the rear driveshaft) and said in the notes, “nowhere to grease driveshaft.” Anyway, I did this myself, using the same WD40 you used. Immediate fix and feels so much better!

I haven't experienced that with mine. Thanks for sharing, it is good to know in case I run into it. If it comes back, I would probably use a good synthetic grease next time. That is what is typically spec'd and I have been doing that in slip joint type drive shafts for many years.
@SwarfWorks
@SwarfWorks 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment! Yeah I wish I would have had some good grease on me when I did this. I thought the WD that I used would at least prove where it was coming from. Though it definitely might not last as long. It’s still working after about 1k miles now. Thanks!

I need to get this done, but it only clunks when it’s warm out likely because of expansion. Is there any way to do this without taking the driveshaft out?

Does this happen in the 2019 - Big Horn editions too? I think I know exactly what "thud" you're talking about, it almost feels like a "hard" gear shift? Sometimes it does it when I pull away, sometimes it does it when I'm slowing down at a red light. It seems totally random.

Thank you so much I have been having the same issue with my TRX I took it too the dealership they just said it was the 2-1 1-2 bump that is normal with the transmission I insisted this was not a normal bump I am going to try this. I started to notice this after a few thousand miles on the truck I have about 6k now and sometimes it really does feel like you get hit from behind.

You’re welcome! I would put money on it that the drive shaft is your problem. I did mine again and used some Amsoil Red and Tacky (I think that’s what it was called) this time. Hopefully it’ll last for a while longer.

It’s just what I had. It lasted 2k miles and others that have used grease have said it lasted about the same. I’m going to try some Amsoil grease next time to see if it’s lasts longer. I just wanted to use anything to prove the point of where it was coming from.

@@SwarfWorks yah it sounds like they are upcharging it to FCA or they are incompetent unless his driveshaft was effed. When I called my local dealer they said they didn't see many trxs in. They may just take the easy way out and order a new part but then we'll be back to square one in another 2-3k miles. Thanks for the upload Paul! 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻

Ok - so I had to do have my mechanic lube it again. So it looks like an annual thing. Maybe every 9 months or so. The clunk is annoying but with so much suspension travel I guess it’s just par for the course. $110 later and fixed again. Should be a dealer thing but my mechanic did It in 35 minutes. Dealership would have kept it for a day and said they couldn’t find a problem.
