Deciding your applicable RAM capacity should just be a sliding scale based on how many chrome tabs you intend to have open.

I had a nice life until 2 days ago when I checked my System settings for Minecraft, I didn't know my RAM was 4 GB. I thought I had 8 all the time.

Watching this 4 years, nearly to the day, in the future as I'm shopping for RAM and trying to decide if I should upgrade from 8 to 16 or just do 32 because I know I'll need it.

The first computer I worked on took PC100 and 256 Mb was a big upgrade. :-)

Literally the last sentence is the information I needed thank you lol.

In the past, I found various speeds of RAM just caused the overall RAM to run at the slowest speed sticks. However, when I tried to upgrade my 2 x 8GB sticks of Ripjaws RAM with another 2 x 8GB sticks of Ripjaws RAM sticks that are a slightly faster speed (other than that, all the specs are the same), I found they don't play nicely together. Rather than all the RAM just running at the slower speed of the older RAM, the all the RAM slowed to a snail's pace. It took about four times as long for my computer to boot and everything ran at about 1/4 of the normal speed, including loading web pages. I removed the new RAM and the computer still runs like normal. I still have to try the new RAM on it's own, to see if maybe that's the issue. I'll also try both pairs of RAM, on their own, in the other pairs of RAM slots on the mother board. If the faster RAM works, then I'll have to fork out a small fortune to buy yet another pair of the same faster RAM.

One more thing, higher speed is not always better. RAM with lower CL is better than high speed with high CL. In fact, DDR1 with low CL is faster than DDR4 with high CL, google some tests. Always look for RAM with the lowest CL, then look at the speed.

you forgot high and low density ram, I bought high density for my rig, when I went shopping this video was a reference, and I got the wrong ram, needed low density

In my first build, I want 16 GB of RAM. If I had two 8 GB sticks and ran them in dual channel, would that equal 16 GB of RAM? I don't think I'd upgrade since 16 GB will be pretty much all I'll need forever. I've been researching and watching enough Techquickie and NCIX Tech Tips to know that 1 + 1 isn't always equal to 2 in the PC world.

4 years forward, yes, 32 gb is mainstream for RAM as Smartphones are getting 12Gb.

you forgot 3 extra tips : 1) Motherboard specs that gives ram frequency limit 2) CPU specs : CPU specs can limit memory frequency single/dual (example from amd support : support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/ddr3memoryfrequencyguide.aspx) 3) OS Limitations : Some OS 32 bits or 64 bits limit how much ram the system can handle. (Example windows 7 64 bits Home basic edition : max 8Gb ram)

Hi. I recently ran into some problems which may be because of not enough ram... My computer starts to stutter at simple tasks and my memory usage idle is 60% or something like that. I was using 2x4gb but now I am upgrading to 2x8gb. I stopped on HyperX Fury because it was recommended by a friend and it's also more affordable than let's say corsair (at least in my country). Thanks for the video :))

Good job! Ram is easy to install now days. Back in the 80's we used to buy ( for a nice $800 ) bucks a PC-XT that ran on chips that we got in a tube lol was fun installing them though, big ol total of 512k and we thought we had something! Now days I run a IT training site that sits on my rack mount servers that have 256 GIGs of mem with 4 processors! its a R815 Dell....monster machine and love it!
