163k miles on my BMW 320d tuned to 236hp and 460nm torque. I have had this setup for over a year now with no problems at all. Probably the best auto transmission I've owned. I do regular oil and filter change as suggested by ZF.
ZF is the leader in vehicle transmissions. I have it in my Ram Sport and it's just the best soooo smooth and I'd it costs twice as much to fox so be it and we'll worth it. Remember Rolls Royce makes them enough said. GM and Ford wouldn't even come close to this master piece.
While I agree that it is the best transmission at the moment, I know for sure that BMW (owner of Rolls Royce) doesn't build them, ZF is a whole separate company.
Did you ever replace the transmission filter/pan and fluid in the time you've had it? FCA states that it's a lifetime fill and doesn't require any maintenance. ZF states that the fluid and filter/pan should be changed every 62k miles. How did you get it to last you 317k? I just bought a used '16 and want to keep it running as long as possible.
@@fernandosanchezjr.3563 He said 31,000 miles, and replace the fluid and filter every 35-40k and you'll be fine. Transmission fluid/filter is a hell of a lot cheaper than a transmission. Goes for any vehicle. Change the fluid in the transmission every couple years and it'll last a long time. That lifetime fluid bullshit is just that its bullshit. The automakers want you to destroy your engine and transmission so you can come back to the dealership so they can steal your money again for another new car with the same lifetime fluid scheme. Its like automakers saying you can go 10k miles between oil changes...DON'T that's a great way to build up sludge in the engine which will over time clog up all the oil passages, oil pickup screen in the oil pan, and starve the engine of oil creating a catastrophic failure. The transmission fluid breaks down over time and causes the transmission to slip and wear out prematurely making for yet another expensive repair. Change the fluids regularly, 5k service intervals for the engine oil is typically ok and a 40k service interval on the transmission is a great key to keeping it alive.
@@jeffhallgren53 I'm sure it's all your fault for sure, my 335i is at 100k, absolutely no problems at all. That's why EVERYBODY is using it and LOVING IT!
Victor Estrada I could see it probably runs great in a little BMW 355I as I’m sure that car gets worked and used as a Ram 1500 does and was intended to be! If you’re going to tell me Victor that it is my fault you probably should know what you’re talking about and compare similar vehicles and not a little car vs a 4 wheel drive pickup, just saying!
Great tranny! I have it in my grand cherokee WK2. Shifts like butter & the engine just idles along at 1800rpm @70mph. Planning my first filter/fluid change later this year as I near 100k miles. ONLY 2 things I would change: add a dipstick and plastic trans pans are junk.
Great unit but some one needs to come out with a E clutch drum that does not strip out and a f clutch drum that can with stand clutch teeth damage, out side out that it is a great unit.
as a 30+ year trans tech, I can tell you that this thing will cost a fortune to fix and is just another way to keep the consumer from even attempting to work on the car them self.
+William Sullivan Agreed brother!. I was a builder for 30+ myself. O drives were needed this 8 speed stuff is a way to keep guys like youand I were from fixing them,Now only the dealers have the right computer they have to be "Flashed".. Again Eliminate the little guys...
+packingten I have not lived long yet but indeed you are correct sir. *Why need a 8-speed when you can get a 3-speed?* (3-speed is what i have now, 1964 model year)
+William Sullivan I will take this transmission any day, over the crappy 6 speeds that GM has put in its trucks for the last 8 years. This thing outperforms the GM transmissions in every possible way. I cant tell you how many times the GM 6L80 almost killed me driving in traffic, as it either refused to downshift, or damn near snapped the u joints when it finally did downshift. This tranny in my Ram 1500 is silky smooth, and always in the right gear. Even the much improved 8 speeds GM is finally rolling out are no match for this tranny. If it costs me twice as much to repair, so be it.
I got that transmission on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2017. I plan after 7.000 km (today I have 73.000km) to change the oil with the pan and filter. ZF sells a kit with pan, bolts, drain plug and built in filter in Germany for ca. 90 Euros with a procedure how to fill in and than to control the level within a certain a temperature range. Most of the cars with 8HP70 got a bypass valve and the procedure for checking the level is diffeterent than to the cars without bypass valve. The OEM writes in the manual, not to change the oil,but I do not believe in that bullshit. ZF recommands to refresh it the first time after 8years or 80-120.000 km,which occurs first. The milage depends on the way you drive yor car,but I prefer to do it at 80.000km.
@@kd2833 ,no On the fair in Hannover there was an interview with an engineer from ZF: first change between 80 and 120tkm,depending on your driving behavior. I baughr already the new vane incl. filter and there is also a ligic sceme how to do it with 2 persons-the entire procedure is described.
when are you going to make a retrofit computer for the older trucks >93 w350 in the 1000 nm range ? so can feel good about driving an automatic with a cummins ? my truck has one wire to the engine to shut it off,one to power the starter, one to charge the battery & finally the 4th wire is to run the grid heater. nice and simple :)
Im experiencing a whining noise reaching 3,000 rpms or hard acceleration Only , no noise at Highway speed / any suggestion or idea why is that happening ? 2015 Dodge Durango 119k miles
Have this in my 16 ram 1500 sport crew cab and not worried about working on it cause I always trade up before my warranty expires.. but yea it would probably be crazy expensive to fix if the warranty is done 😟
If it actually breaks... u loose your shirt financially by trading vehicles so often. Yet are worried about repair bills that probably won't happen. Good financial plan. I bet u r called "sucker" at the dealer
BMW 7 Series 760Li saloon with the V12 engine was the first car fitted with this transmission. Now there are so many models that use it in the luxury car world its ridiculous. Below is a list of what I've found. +WakeTheDead300 False- the fluid though is 50.00 a quart that's FIFTY DOLLARS A QUART and the filter is integrated into the pan thus replacing the pan is necessary, total cost sat at the dealer is about 900.00, total NONSENSE, only God knows the long term reliability- efficient yes but any savings will be washed away when the fluid is changed
+WakeTheDead300 I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee and went to the dealer for fluid for the old ZJ, the guy at the parts dept told me about the cost of the fluid for the new vehicles as he just bought one. I am SURE lots of owners wont be changing their fluid every 30 thousand miles when they learn the cost, I do mine with Mopar fluid, filer and gasket for about $$$100.00 and it has 144,000 miles with no problems so far. If/when I buy another Jeep it will be a Wrangler with a MANUAL
While the fluid is in fact pretty pricey, it lasts quite a long time if you drive the vehicle normally. The liter bottles can be bought for around 25 US and the filter 170 US, all made by ZF; through online retailers and the dealer can change it for around 200 bucks. ZF states that you need not change it until over 100K if the car is driven normally, but around 50K to 75K if driven more aggressively.
I'm sure Ford's 10 speed is awesome, but from experience this ZF is great too. My 2013 Ram has the 8 speed 8HP70 coupled with the 5.7 Hemi and the 3.92 rear diff. Very pleasant ride with flawless shifting....and the power is there when I want it.
You could not be more wrong. These are NOT Chrysler; however, they are used by Chrysler. The ZF 8HP is a world class transmission made by ZF a German company. Now go troll somewhere else.
And besides , I was trying to find out some info on this transmission and car , because i done had two ford contours not long ago, and lost 650.00 because they had bad transmissions in them, and i did not want to get a car with a bad transmission in it again , because i don't have the money for a new car , the only reason i got this one was because a friend of mine sold it to me for less then 400.00 dollars which i was able to afford. because i don't have money like you do i'm more poor then it seem's i am.
ALL THIS!.. But they could've give us an dipstick. Even with a custom tune after my 8hp70 passes 120⁰ it turns in to a slippy slush box but it also depends on the day. Somedays it's got snappy perfect shifts and some it feels like it's full of mashed potatoes. Its almost like a woman, very Indecisive.
