Dougie Hamilton scored with 8:24 remaining in overtime, and rookie Akira Schmid made 35 saves in his first Stanley Cup Playoff start for the New Jersey Devils in a 2-1 win against the New York Rangers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
Hamilton took a pass from Jesper Bratt in the right face-off circle and the defenseman scored his first playoff overtime winner on a wrist shot.
New York leads the best-of-7 series 2-1. Game 4 is here Monday.
Jack Hughes scored, Bratt had two assists and Hamilton also had an assist for the Devils, the No. 2 seed in the Metropolitan Division.
Chris Kreider scored, and Igor Shesterkin made 26 saves for the Rangers, the No. 3 seed in the Metropolitan.
Schmid started in place of Vitek Vanecek, who allowed nine goals on 52 shots in identical 5-1 losses in Games 1 and 2 at Prudential Center. The 22-year-old is the third rookie to start a playoff game in New Jersey history, joining Sean Burke (1988) and Hockey Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur (1994).
Kreider gave New York a 1-0 lead at 3:39 of the second period on a wrist shot from the left face-off circle off a 2-on-1 with Mika Zibanejad. He beat Schmid over his blocker for his fifth goal of the series.
Kreider is the fastest Rangers skater to reach five goals in the postseason (three games).
Hughes tied it 1-1 at 10:37 with a power-play goal after Shesterkin was penalized for roughing against Timo Meier in his crease. Hughes used a screen by Ondrej Palat and took a wrist shot for his second of the series.
