Bearded dragons are possibly the best pet lizards that you can get, but what if they are too big for you? Wouldn't it be wonderful if there existed a lizard with all of the great attributes of a bearded dragon, just in a smaller package? Well the Rankin's dragon, also known as the Lawson's dragon, dwarf bearded dragon, or pygmy bearded dragon might just be the best pet lizard for you!

A friend of mine is a vet and when Calci-Sand came out, she told me to get it off my shelves. In all her years as a veterinarian (at that point, 19 years), she only had to operate on 3 lizards with substrate impactions. Calci-Sand came onto the scene and she was doing 1-2 impaction surgeries almost every week and it was out for about 6 months at that point. T-Rex had just sent us a few boxes of different colors as samples to sell. I only sold a couple of bags to a customer who used it for her rock gardens and the rest got thrown out.

My beardie (Dragster) loves to watch videos with me. We will watch all kinds of videos on my laptop together. When I am working (I work from home) he will relax in one of those soft, fleece cat tents on my desk next to my monitors. I will put my laptop on for him to keep him occupied while I'm busy. He LOVES those bird/squirrel videos on RU-vid that are "for cats." Or also those aquarium/fish videos as well. But whenever there is a new lizard or bearded dragon video out, we watch those together! 🤣🤣

I think the pygmy bearded are my favourite dragon to keep as pets. A lot of the smaller dragons in Australia don't have the same temperament as the central bearded dragons and are extremely skittish and are un-inclined to be handled where as these guys just chill out on you like the centrals. The only thing you don't really get from Pygmies is that there aren't a lot of color morphs, even in Australia.
@lucusrose
@lucusrose 3 месяца назад
As to morphs, why is that? Are they less genetically disposed to having that much variation or are breeders just too focused on the "centrals?"
@mattm7798
@mattm7798 3 месяца назад
Great post. I would say give your last point time. In the 90s and early 2000s, there weren't all these morphs of beardies. You had beardies and slightly more colorful beardies. Rankin's are also nowhere near widespread to the quantity beardie's were when morphs started popping up. I'd say in 10-15 years, the rankins dragon will surpass the beardie, but they just aren't enough of them yet :)

It really depends on both the interior and exterior. For example, a lot of PVC enclosures look very boring even if the inside is very ornately decorated. And depending on the type of room decor you've chosen a PVC enclosure could look very out of place. And simple aquariums can also look out of place depending on the rest of the room. If you're the kind of person who liks old wooden furniture and has a very classic look to a livingroom, you'd probably need to repurpose an old piece of wooden furniture into an enclosure in order to help it fit in. But these clear enclosures might not look out of place is as many places simply because they are clear on all sides.

I don’t have a pygmy beardie, but I do have a dwarf beardie. In Western Australia, central beardies are illegal to keep since they are not native to the state, so we make do with keeping the dwarfs. Some keepers say their dwarfs are friendly and social, but my boy is quite standoffish about handling, so he is a display pet. It’s interesting how social pygmys are, he is a beautiful model for the video

In your opinion, what makes them intelligent, how they think, socialize, tame up, interact, problem solve, also your take on Reptile emotions such as pleasure or fear. You could do a scoring/rating system on this whole series too!!! Something to think of if you start running out of content 😂.

Finally @ClintsReptiles did a video on the Rankins! Dwarf bearded dragon: half the size, twice the fun! :D The only thing missing in this video is that they are far more social and tolerant towards each other. In nature they live in small groups unlike centrals which mostly live alone. Which makes them a lot easier to cohabitate. In fact a pet shop owner that had them said to me he recommends keeping Rankins with a minimum of 2. One of the most underrated lizards. They appear to be much more available and affordable here in Europe. Seen them om expo's and even in a pet shop. Although far far less compared to the central. The inbred issues might not exist here as much as in the US. I went specifically for them as my first lizards because of their smaller size but similar character. And unlike a Leopard gecko they are day active. I still think it is my best pet purchase ever. I bought an adult pair from the previous owner which were sold with a 80x40x50cm terrarium. Which I upgraded to 100x50x50. BTW mine have pooped on me (and other people) several times and it is very smelly and gross. How about a Rankins VS Painted dragon video? :)

Please tell the guy who asked if they're "morons" that mine is potty trained. I will put down a puppy pad (if he's out and about) and knows to go to the pad to poop. Even when he was very sick and I was holding him, he still tried to walk down to his pad to poop. Mine also is so tame that he sleeps next to me. I have one of those soft fleece tents for cats... and he sleeps next to me in it. I cover the opening with a towel, and he doesn't come out until I open it up. He will wait for me to lift up the towel and say "good morning." He knows his name, and all kinds of words too. He has ALWAYS refused to eat insects (okay per vet - he gets Oxbow Omnivore care 3x a week) and I make him a salad and call it his "lunch." If I tell him "go eat your lunch," he will look at his bowl and climb down to eat it. He knows "squirrel, birds and mom" as well. They are very intelligent and the more time you spend with them and get to know them, the more you'll realize just how complex they are. I couldn't figure out why mine wouldn't eat out of one of those dark "rock/stone" looking bowls from the pet store. I eventually changed his bowl to a clear plastic bowl and he ate every day. He doesn't like to put his head down into something he cannot see through, so I always use a clear plastic container now. Just like baths as well... he doesn't like to go into anything that goes up over his head. So I have a shallow 12x9 plastic container that I fill with warmed spring water. He LOVES it. Mine has also showed anxiety in other ways as well. When I brought him to the vet the first few times, he ran from the vet TO me... The vet was amazed! He ran out of the vet's hands and climbed up my shirt for me to hold him. The first time he did this, I had only had him a month. He still wasn't letting me handle him much at home, but he already knew that I was somewhere safe enough to run to, from a stranger. That was so cool!! It's all about spending time with your pets and getting to know them. Beardies are definitely not meant to sit on a rock in an enclosure with nothing to do and no interaction. They are intelligent, highly social creatures. Mine might be just a little bit spoiled too. ❤

So how did you potty train your beardie?
@emmyali920
@emmyali920 7 дней назад
@@Ofallthings089 lots and lots of repetition. He sometimes forgets or goes to the potty pad and misses by a little bit. But for the most part he makes it. At first I when I saw him doing the "poop wiggle" I would quickly move him to the potty pad (I ALWAYS have one out and ready to go.) And after he was done, I would make a big deal about it, almost like when a child uses the potty for the first time. I did that many many times and he just started going to the pad to go. Even one time when he was really sick... he ate something and I was literally on the phone with the emergency vet... he got up and went to the pad to poop. I spend lots and lots of time with him. I work from home and he's with me 24/7. That helps as well with the repetition.

I was sold one as a normal bearded dragon from the local petsmart when I was 15. She got maybe 5 inches snout to vent, but reached full maturity, laid unfertilized eggs a few times in her life, and lived a good 9 years (with a crazy appetite her entire life btw). The internet was still young so I spent about a month freaking out thinking I had done something wrong because she just stopped growing and I didn't know lawson's dragons existed. She also had a mansion as I thought she would be much bigger so I built her a 60 gallon enclosure. She was wonderful and got my mom interested in my reptiles, highly recommend. I didn't know they were that uncommon either, I don't know if the laws were different when I was a kid or if I just got an illegal wild caught import (probably lol). Also great video as always.

There are actually a very small amount of Barbata in the USA. I think there were only 3 when the import ban started. I don’t know if there are still pure Easterns, but I have a half Barbata that can jump over a meter upwards. They’re a handful unlike Centrals.

I absolutely adore my Rankins Dragon but it is worth pointing out that he brummates (like hibernation) every year from September to March and this is quite common, at least in the UK. My little dragon has been asleep for seven months now and I miss him so much 😢 Also it seems that it can be possible to cohabitate Rankins Dragons (unlike beardies!) but definitely do very thorough research about how to do this safely before attempting it. PS I also have a Cape House Snake and he is absolutely perfect and the best snake I could have ever asked for! You DEFINITELY need to do a video on these guys!

they're amazing! I looked after 2 (they were neglected). I corrected the hand of one with a cocktail stirrer (calcium deficiency)nand bandage tape and the other had a docked tail and a healed back leg that was very enlarged with the scar tissue. It was sad to say goodbye to them. I hope Savannah and Mambo lived happy long lives.

I'm sure someone else has probably said this already somewhere in the comments. But, we pronounce is Null-a bore. Not null Arbour. Don't worry, I don't think there's a single American who's ever correctly pronounced Australian English without being corrected lol.

If I could physically keep up with caring for one, I'd get one--a nice quiet pet that doesn't need a dog-door, leave piles of poop in yard for my son to step in when he mows--only I doubt he'd bark if someone broke into my house, LOL. Anyway, I bet my grandsons would love to have one of these, if we could just talk my daughter in law into it. Great video!

I had a pair of Rankins for a while... Steve and Irwin. Very cute, easier to keep in small space... but sadly, they had the personality of a pair of sticks. They did not want to interact, did not do much in the way of making themselves appealing as pets, and were more display pets than handleable pets. I eventually passed them on to a rabidly passionate beardie fan who couldn't believe I was giving them up. I hope she found great joy in them! I went on to adopt a big beardie, and he's a joy... and he's never pooped on me, either! :)

Im glad you talked about inbreeding depression in a reptile. I've seen a lot of, particularly ball python morph people, claiming inbreeding doesn't matter in reptiles, which is obviously completely false. Thanks for touching on this in a video!

The poop thing is why I trained my beardies to poop into the shower drain - completely eliminates the issue of getting pooped on. Also, my family's pretty sure my beardie Luna was part Rankins, because she was only 15 inches long - which is tiny for an Inland beardie but massive for a Rankins - and had significantly rounder facial features than you typically see in Inlands (which my mom described as being "baby faced"...)
