Wright during my Layton phase about 10 years ago, so it had been way too long since I've actually played it to give it fair placements. My god, I cannot tell you how frustrating it was to take all the progress made in Apollo Justice for both Phoenix and the future of the court system, only for everything to come crashing back to zero. And for me, I played Dual Destinies WELL after Apollo Justice, and even with that distance, it still didn't sit well with me. Thankfully the rest of the game picked up speed after the first case, and I loved it as much as the others.
I will say, it does make a hell of a lot more sense when tying the original trilogy into the plot of these two games as well. I really recommend watching the video about the dark age of the law by Kaempfdog for more context of why there’s more merit to the transition from Apollo justice to dual destinies than meets the eye. I still agree that it’s done extremely sloppy but I see what the writers were trying to go for
If you play the cases in chronological order it feels way more natural. I did it and i now appreciate DD more, although it's still my second least favourite in the mainline games.
I love Dual Destinies and SOJ, but what I hate the most about them is that Athena is pushed to the sideline, and Phoenix's character from AJ is just completely reversed, and he's back to original trilogy Phoenix, bluffs and all, which makes no sense considering all he's been through and how much experience he has. Changing Phoenix's character so drastically in Apollo Justice was certainly a bold move for the creators to make considering he's the main character, and that version of him is actually my favorite portrayal of him, but even if I didn't like Hobo Mastermind Phoenix, it would have been better if they just stuck with what Apollo Justice had set up instead of essentially rebooting all the development Phoenix had.

I agree that if you remember the very moment you first experienced a case, that's a good sign. I was at my nana's house on my DS when I saw Edgeworth holding the gun for the first time and I stood up in shock.
Absolutely based, DGS2 is so good Imo cases 2 to 5 are just a straight sweep of some of the best cases in the franchise; it's a delight for music students and Sherlock-lovers, and as someone who is both it was _insane_ - there's a ton of symbolism in the instruments and motifs, and a bunch of characters are actually pulled straight from Sherlock, like Drebber! DGS-1's main downside is the terrible pacing - it's incredibly slow and tedious, which is a shame when you need to know all of it to contextualise DGS2. Still, the first 'real case' in 1-3 feels like a spin on Matt Engarde where you have to consider what it means to be an attorney, which I really like, and it's something that gets touched upon again in the fifth case. The fifth case is also great for its use of camera angles and music - probably one of my favourite moments is when it's zoomed onto the music box, and spins to show Eggy + Gregson in the back. I can only describe the writing in the Great Ace Attorney as Chekhov's machine gun: so so many little details all started to come to light towards the end, and while I was able to predict a good chunk of them, some flew right under the radar - like Iris being 10 years old, or Mikotoba wearing the stereotypical Watson hat. I do think the first case would've had much more impact if the victim was named Watson and not Wilson, though. Not much that can be done about that, I guess I could go on for ages about how good DGS2 is, but yeah. Easily my favourite Ace Attorney game without competition
I was looking for an Ace Attorney ranking like this that went in chronological order! I wanted to watch one, but I haven’t played all of the games yet and don’t want to be spoiled on the ones I haven’t seen. Most of the other case ranking videos I’ve seen seem to just go in order of last-to-first place.

Dude, legit, an hour and 18 minutes in and I seriously dont have any issues with how you are ranking things. I personally liked the Themis Academy case the most out of all the DD cases. The courthouse bombing case was fine. But I REALLY didn't care for the Nine Tails Vale case. While I could argue that DD desrrves to be in C tier at least or even B1/2 tier. I torally get your issues with it. Juniper kept appearing because the game was supposed to be more about Athena than Apollo and Phoenix. So they were trying to push her best friend Juniper. I liked Athena a lot. Simon was cool, but I dont think he topped Fran, Miles, or Klav in DD. Yeah, I kinda hated SOJ. It was way worse than DD to me. I believe this one had the soba case, and I LOVED that case. But even that couldnt save the whole game for me. Also, dont feel bad. These are your opinions and we all understand completely! I know a lot of people hated DD. I was told I was kinda the odd one out for not hating it. 😂 Apparently there were few people who really liked it. So dont feel like you are being mean or unfair, you are just being honest about your thoughts and feelings. So keep your head up and thanks for being so interesting.😊
Could not agree more about 3-5 and DGS2-5 and about DGS 2 being the absolute best that Ace Attorney has ever been. I also could not agree more about how Dual Destinies' wole dark age of the law thing makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Agree on 3-5 but DGS2-5 just has a few too many things dragging it down for me to consider it truly top tier, even if it does have some of the best stuff in the whole series (like the final Dance of Deduction). The whole final confrontation with Stronghart felt so anticlimactic to me. Like you take Stronghart himself down after presenting like two pieces of evidence, then there's the whole "all hope is lost" moment where he reveals he's above it all. So, perfect time for Ryunosuke to use his wits and complete his character arc, and also finally complete the game's running theme of standing up to corrupt power systems? Nope, time for Sholmes ex machina to arrive with his hologram bullshit (I can accept him making stuff that's a little ahead of its time but *we* still don't have holograms, and even then it just comes out of nowhere with very little buildup), to take down Stronghart, a basically all-powerful man above justice, by... going to a higher power and getting him kicked out. The whole final confrontation was just really lame to me, even if the rest of the case is pretty amazing.
Only halfway through, but I actually enjoyed Turnabout Serenade too, despite its obvious flaws! I remember finishing it, saying "That was a really good case!" then reading that most people hate it. I deffo need to replay AJ, glad we share a lot of opinions
Personally i can see why DD is so low, but the one thing i felt was wasted was the reveal of the phantom, cause you could have used it to show moments earlier where some familiar character was acting weird, only to be revealed that the phantom was impersonating them, like cmon man he had all the masks of other characters from their cases! it would have been awesome if jinxie showed up trying to get info from Blackquill while pretending to be a young girl!

About 4-3 (that's some kind of a little spoiler if you haven't play the case, but not for the final part), wasn't Machi Tobaye picked as the main suspect by Gavin 'cause somehow he knew that Machi wasn't blind from the very beginning? Can't remember this exactly
if you played the original phoenix wright on ds (or in my case the wii lol) it's super obvious that rise from the ashes was added after the fact for the game, all the characters and locations look a lot more detailed and have cleaner spritework compared to everything else that was ported over from the original japanese gameboy release

In my version of Turnabout Serenade, I fixed it not making sense for Machi to be accused by making Machi the victim and LeTouse the defendant. Our client was willing to arrest a money desperate child and have him executed smuggling, but got framed for murder and arrested. The real killer almost not being caught. He’s probably gonna need to think about his life.

I would rate Dual Destinies higher. I think it's more than the sum of its parts. Disappointing main villain though. But I will say Dual Destinies probably has the best soundtrack of the series.
Most people rank the DD cases (5-5 especially) so high at the top it's kinda refreshing seeing someone point out the flaws (leaning 500% into the anime trope characterization, the dumb phantom master of disguise plot, the dark age of hamfisting, etc) They're serviceable and all, but comically misses the heart of the series so much in favor of being "'super complicated but not really so it means it's gotta be clever writing" On the other side Magical Turnabout and especially Turnabout Storyteller also usually get a lot of unnecessary flack, so I can't help but agree seeing them the props they deserve
