Pound-for-pound, Finland is by far the most successful nation in Formula 1. It’s a subarctic, sparsely populated country of 5.5 million with no Finnish Grand Prix and no FIA Grade 1 circuits. It has however produced nine Formula 1 drivers, more than much larger countries such as Mexico, China and India; and of those nine drivers, eight have started a race, five have won a race, and three have won a Championship. When it comes to ranking these drivers, I’ve decided to leave that to you, my subscribers. So, from the land of saunas, Sibelius, Nokia and the Northern Lights, here’s your verdict on all nine Finnish Formula 1 drivers.

How people rated Kovalainen higher than Salo is beyond my understanding. Why? Because Kovalainen has one odd win? But Salo also could've won in Germany in 99. Plus he drove for the worse teams during his career in general. When he had a chance with Ferrari he performed well. Kovalainen didn't perform well in McLaren at all.
@de-fault_de-fault
@de-fault_de-fault Год назад
Recency bias is also a thing. More people probably remember Kovalainen than Salo.
@ForzaPolska06
@ForzaPolska06 Год назад
Maybe recency bias Or generally the fact that a lot of people recognize Salo for spinning trying to catch a Minardi and there isn't especially a positive moment that people recognize him for even though he was superb in 1999 at Ferrari and fantastic in Monaco, people just don't remember that And people recognize Kovalainen because he was more recent and was at McLaren with Lewis Hamilton Doesn't matter for them that he didn't perform

@@de-fault_de-fault They're probably about equal. If Salo was put up against an adult Lewis Hamilton in 1999 instead of Irvine, I don't think he would have fared much better than Kovalinen did against him. Also, Kovalinen was the only driver out of the new teams to even get within touching distance of the establishment.
@McLarenMercedes
@McLarenMercedes Год назад
To OP. Kovalainen beat Fisichella at Renault in his rookie season. Who did Salo ever beat during a season? Say what you will about Kovalainen but he put a McLaren on pole. Salo couldn't put a Ferrari on pole. And there is of course the 2004 Race of Champions...

Also another fun fact regarding Finnish drivers Despite only ever having 9 drivers grace F1 there has been a Finnish driver in f1 every single year since 1989 Crazy stat and they should have the third longest current streak of nationality represented on the grid after the UK and I believe Germany

I personally put Kimi in 1st. His racecraft and ingenuity behind the wheel was better than anyone in thhe modern era imo, even if he wasn't as fast as Hakkinen on a Saturday. And he was also practically invincible from any pressure outside the cockpit, or was the world's best actor. But Hakkinen deserves ttoo be number 1 just as much.
@daarom3472
@daarom3472 Год назад
I mean, he lost 17-1 to Alonso, lost every single season heavily to Vettel and was about on par with Massa. He was good, but never a top elite driver. His only title came from a campaign in which the opposition had constant infighting. He didn't even win that many races in 2007.
@potatogirlcultist19
@potatogirlcultist19 Год назад
@@daarom3472 He won the most races out of any driver in 2007, with 6 wins, two more than anyone else. He had reliability issues as well which the McLaren's didn't. But yes, in the second Ferrari days he wasn't the same driver apart from rare occasions.
@lukasgraesslin
@lukasgraesslin Год назад

@fiftyin07
@fiftyin07 Год назад
@@daarom3472 You obviously didn’t watch Kimi at McLaren or Ferrari the first time then. He came within 2 points of Michael in 2003, driving a car from early 2002… and he easily wins the 2005 title over Alonso had his car not failed countless times leaving him with grid penalties, and failed 3 times while he led the race. Suzuka 2005 is one of the most incredible driving performances in F1 history… He finished the last 9 races straight on the podium in his championship year, and won 6 times total. He took 2 years off, came back and literally bankrupted Lotus because he did so much better than anybody expected. He’s a 3 time WDC if he had any good luck, and you’re trying to tell me he wasn’t an elite driver? Nonsense.
@Dropped2436
@Dropped2436 Месяц назад
@@daarom3472 he said it was the new wire braking thingy and struggling to get to grips with the car that caused the poor result when he was with Alonso. It was a shame as it made him look a lot worse than he is. Also, he was simply past his prime when he was with Vettel

As much as I love Kimi, it's his nonchalant attitude in later part of career that prevents him from being number 1. Hakkinen was always professional and reliable man on the track. Also, his loyalty to McLaren (especially during their rough times in mid 90s) is commendable. Not to mention the fact that he immediately intimidated Senna when he sat in that McLaren for the first time.

Maybe in the latter part of his career it hindered him, but it certainly helped him win the 2007 championship. Whilst Hamilton and Alosno had an intense rivalry, with Hamilton getting into Alonso's head and Hamilton perhaps succumbing to the pressure late in the season, Raikkonen just focused on his own performances, stayed out of trouble and woon the championship.

yeah I think his longevity exposed his lack of work ethic. The first half of kimi's career he dominated his team mates and was for a few years the fastest driver on the planet over 1 lap. Then in the second half his descent was swift getting trounced by alonso and dominated by vettel. Then he dropped down the field to sauber to top up his retirement account

It feels like people don't fully realise how good Keke was. Easily up there with Gilles for me. A natural, an unstoppable beast, a guy who could make things happen that you didn't think were possible. On sheer talent and skill, I'm not sure there has ever been anyone better. Shame he didn't stick around at Williams for 86 and 87 because he almost certainly would have taken both titles and made #1 on this list.
@edostella17

Completely agree, not an all time great, but far better than people remember. Probably 1982 wasn't even his best season, he performed well with poor cars in the years after, particularly considering he didn't have a turbo engine with Williams until the end of 1984. Very fast...not the smartest
@Rhubba
@Rhubba Год назад
Keke will always be my #1 Finnish driver. I loved his hard charging style and he was always entertaining to watch. Woe be any driver who would dare to do a risky overtaking manoeuvre on him...they usually ended up in the sandtraps. I pitied the suspensions of his cars as he rode over the kerbs as well but you could see a driver really pushing his cars to the limit, or beyond them. Often drove his best on the most horrible circuits which his more feted contemporaries couldn't handle. My favourite drivers were always the daring entertainers who were hard chargers: Peterson, Villeneuve, Rosberg, Mansell, Montoya and Alonso.

@@edostella17 Well he certainly wasn't a stupid fella either: he was millionaire even before he was a champion in Williams, he had apartments in multiple countries and his own jet too. He has always been a good businessman, promoting himself really well to gather all that fortune. And when it comes to his best season, I'd say that he peaked in 1983. Monaco gamble with the tyres was a masterstroke, lunatic flat-out chases up the Eau Rouge in Spa, that 360 spin in opening lap of Long Beach race.

I think Kovalainen was very promising in his early career, a great qualifier and able to score podiums and won a race in a competitive car. However, Salo was able to drag points finishes out of struggling machinery when he was at Tyrrell and Sauber at a time you had to finish 6th. Just my opinion, and I don’t think there’s much between them.

Kovalainen being ranked higher than Salo is borderline insulting. He pretty much finished behind the Ferraris, the Saubers and the driver he Goddang replaced in 08, Fernando Alonso, and he was driving a dang Renault, and the Saubers stopped being competitive by the second half of 08. He alone cost McLaren any chance at the WCC. 09 was even worse. Sure the McLaren was not very good, but c'mon, Lewis got 2 wins and he couldn't even get a Podium???

Kimi outscored, outpaced & outqualified Coulthard by a bigger margin than Hakkinen did. Hakkinen only had one true elite team-mate Senna for 3 races compared to 5 years of Alonso & Vettel for Kimi. Kimi also had Montoya & Massa earlier on in his career. I'm just saying, Kimi faced tougher and deeper opposition than Mika did. Plus the ban of beryllium screwed Mercedes over in the v10 era
