Ranking Records: 10 Bands We Have Learned to Dislike

The very first thought I had once I understood the gist of this video, was The Eagles. Great content once again. I'll have to check out the mediocrity of Mumford & Sons. I saw Sting in the late 80s with a great jazz band - Kenny Copeland on piano - in Bloomington, Indiana. I love the first 2 Police records

Interesting topic. Ironically the great majority of the artists you showed in this video I never liked in the first place. I do have the first three Arcade Fire albums but I don't go back to them anymore. I would add Fleet Foxes to the list (though I never liked them either!).

About a decade ago, my husband and a couple of his friends really got into The Shins. He played me a few tracks and I thought they sounded interesting. A while after that, we were in a friend's car with a Shins CD playing: I found it all really repetitive and utterly dreary. I hadn't fallen down the rabbit hole for The Shins! Very interesting video!

Great assessment! I agree with all your commentary and I liked the format. You are quite fair when you could just rip the bands you highlighted. Fair & balanced, to borrow a phrase. I would add Kiss as the final slot (or The Who?). Just carried on too long past their prime...

Thanks Mike. I understand your rationale and largely agree with the 9 artists you discuss. I love U2 but I completely get why others don't. I'd throw into the mix Phil Collins and Billy Joel. Strange thing is I've recently come back to them having not played their music for a number of years. They were incredibly successful but became over exposed on commercial radio and in the media ( especially Phil) in the day. Truth is they made some great music and deserve to be listened to again.

Most of the bands I've liked when I was younger I still like, even if it's not to the same extent as before. Coldplay is actually of those bands I loved when I was younger, and I still dig some of their early stuff, especially from 2 to 4th albums. Their newer stuff, eh, few gems here and there but not the biggest fan. I think saying Coldplay is over hated is fair. Some bands that I find over hated are Def Leppard, Anthrax, In Flames, and some others.

Excellent video Mike. My suggestion for the 10th band is Oasis.

10. Jason Isbell. Sleepy time music and what a musician friend of mine called "tempo madness": most songs at the same tempo. Snoozeville.

I'm curious to know if you have an opinion on Ryan Adam's music. He used to be one of my favorite artists of the 21st century, but after the New York Times story came out I haven't listened to his music in a while.

I never liked most of these bands to begin with. I would add Dave Mathews. I’d be interested to hear your opinion of Richard Thompson and or Fairport Convention.

I haven't heard any of their albums in full, but what I've heard from Nickelback I like. I never could understand people's hatred of them. Maybe I should hear all of their albums. At heart, the Eagles were a country rock band. They added Don Felder to get a more rocking sound, and for me that worked, especially on their album One of These Nights, but then they tried to get an even more rocking sound by adding Joe Walsh, and imho it didn't work, especially on their album Hotel California (which I think is their worst album next to Long Road Out of Eden), but overall I like the Eagles. My #10 choice is easy: Michael Jackson

I would add Elton John. I know you did a whole segment on him which clearly denotes which albums of his you prefer (the early stuff). But like some of the other attributes you listed of other artists, Elton became obsessed with sounding off his opinion on everything! Still adore his early stuff, frankly all the way up until about 1982 (Empty Garden is a gorgeous song), but most of his releases after that left no interest for me. Sure he still had tons of success, but his career careened into a whole different type of pop. BTW I know this is not your genre of music, either but Madonna has lost a ton of fans for similar reasons.

I've hated the Eagles since Hotel Calif. Poor Elton lost his voice decades ago . I must listen to 80's muzac at work- it gives me stomach cramps . There are artists I am proud to have never bought an album. Phil Collins, for example, and then there are the shameful albums -but that's between me and God. I'll never tell !

I nominate R.E.M. might be just me though 😉

10 would be the Beatles. If ever there was a band that doesn’t deserve 55 years worth of hype, it’s this one, and the hype just continues.

Man, those first two Arcade Fire albums are still flawless though.
