I revisited IF THIS BASS COULD ONLY TALK...man, I dunno. I think I like it even less today vs. when I bought it. ;-) Did revisit STANLEY CLARKE this morning on the commute...you guys were right about "Life Suite"! Connors' solo begins by gently reeling you in. By the end, he's setting your hair on fire. Now ya gotta rank the albums of Billy Connors!

Another excellent show! Thanks to Andy, have ordered Up (2014), Stanley Clarke Band (2010), Toys of Men (2007)! Another good one is Thunder (2008), a collaboration with Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten.

I'm a big fan of Stanley Clarke and i've seen him three times, once with Return To Forever during their 2008 reunion tour, once with Hiromi and once with his band, he is one of the greatest bass players on the planet and i've been waiting for a ranking albums for this legend. You guys absolutely delivered. 1. School Days 2. Children Of Forever 3. If This Bass Could Only Talk 4. Jazz In The Garden w/ Hiromi & Lenny White. 5. Up 6. The Message 7. The Stanley Clarke Band 8. The Toys Of Men 9. Journey To Love 10. Live At The Greek w/ Najee, Larry Carlton, Deron Johnson & Billy Cobham

Enjoyed this immensely! Love Andy's enthusiasm for this '70s Fusion...SC self-titled was one of my 1st Fusion LPs. Never heard of SC...he just looked CAF on the cover & back cover. I do have Journey To Love as my #1. "Song For John (Coltrane)" = Mind. Blown. FYI: Nice version of Clarke's "Bass Folk Song" can be had on Moon Germs by Joe Farrell.

aka Charles Johnson aka Charlies Icarus Johson. You'll find him on some things -- some other Clarke, some Jaco... he was in Al Jarreau's band for a while, on some George Duke...

True... I remember George Duke mentioned that he loaned some money to "Icarus" for a VW van circa 1978 and he never saw him again...

Yah, Charles "Icarus" Johnson played with Stanley Clarke on the "Rocks Pebbles and Sand" album and tour with Simon Phillips and Steve Bach and with George Duke on the "Reach For It" album. He played the funky rhythm riff behind Byron Miller's bass solo on "Reach For It." Great player!

I agree, Ray Gomez is so underrated, he is brilliant on Narada Michael Waldens first album and that features Jeff & Carlos as well

School Days is far and away my favorite. An iconic album featuring the incredible guitar work of Ray Gomez. Ray’s solo album “Volume” is stellar I have the original vinyl I bought back in the day. Look up underrated and under appreciated guitarist in the dictionary and Ray would be near the top of the list.

Absolutely your number 3 , 2 and 1 is so on point. The Brown album has changed my life since the age of 12. 40 years later, I can humbly say I’ve mastered the art of drumming. There is still so much to learn. I learned something from the way you describe what you hear. Drumming has never paid a bill in my life. I only do it to survive. It is a way of life.

Another great discussion. My fav is most definitely his first "Children of Forever" from 1973 and I love Andy Bey's (and Dee Dee's) vocals so much. Now listening again to those that came over the next years and it's fine stuff.

Holdsworth as "secret weapon" -- that's spot on, Pete. I played Journey to Love a bezillion times in my youth. But now I have to check out the first one, which I've somehow never heard.

These videos remind me of all the music I need to go back to and rediscover. I love Jaco but I think Mr Clarke needs to be recognized as the monster player he is.

Saw Stanley Clarke in the Iridium Club in NYC - came across from Belfast - and he did not disappoint. Mixture of new and older material with of course School Days. The younger musicians he played with were incredible and no better mentor.

Nice discussion Andy and Pete. Stanley is just an all around amazing player. I definitely need to check out the new material, and fill the holes I haven't listen to. Agree Children of Forever would be a masterpiece if it didn't have the vocals.

before the break dancing craze in the jump in the shark of rockit sorry I had to say that there was some good stuff. I never knew that that album Future shock was a cover that brother Curtis Mayfield originally did it of course they're both a couple of Chicagoans so I guess I should be surprised I think they hung together back in the day too.

I realised after we did this that he sometimes goes by Charles Johnson. He is on Reach for It by George Duke and he is also on Rock Pebbles and Sand. He is now quite a well known political commentator.
