The Black Dog is commonly used as a metaphor for depression, there is actually a song called "black dog sitting on my shoulder" by a band called manic street preachers where they talk about depression and mention Winston Churchill and his struggles with depression. So I think that The Black Dog will likely be about her depression after the end of a relationship

TTPD is gonna be just like Midnights. it won't be a cut and dry "breakup album." poet department makes me have college flashbacks. I believe we are the poets department. we will be disecting her "poems" Remember that she has been performing her old songs and we all know she is rerecording them. do think doing that is like mowing the lawn? (I don't know I picked a random job) When you perform a track over and over again you feel what you felt the last time you recorded the songs. Taylor must have had some good expeiences with her manager. that's why it hurts so much when they stab you in the back. Anyway you relive the situations that made you write the songs and you have a different perspective which problbly inspires you. it's finding the vault tracks in the vault tracks.

The "black dog" in Australia is a term we use, or men use for a deep depression. You know, the black dog's got me. Not sure if its seen that way anywhere else but here, if you mention the black dog, everyone knows what it means.
