Ranking the Worst Monstercat Songs of 2023 

When I first heard Eat Sleep Rage I couldn’t believe it was an actual song… and then it got stuck in my head and discovered that I actually liked it

December 2023 Monstercat is full of Remixes and VIP's this month.

Overall a very agreeable list, and I got absolutely disappointed when the BC release came out, and I only had to see the length of it...

having Eat Sleep Rage on this list is unbased asf like that song is literally my 4th favourite song of 2023. I wish more ppl would like Eat Sleep Rage but it is what it is I guess. Also having Ruin U and New Worlds here is also unbased but I get why ppl don't like it but I honestly think they are still overhated Last of all, when u said "random noises plus a riddim beat does not equal music" I completely agreed with that quote cuz I am a big fan of dubstep but riddim is one subgenre of dubstep that I despise and that track is a example of that so spot on for that, absolutely based quote Edit: I just saw the thumbnail and not be rude but it offends me since Eat Sleep Rage is my 2nd fav song of MC 2023 and its an absolute banger

Something I want to point out that I discovered recently: for some of those boring songs you mentioned like Daybreak, Groovemasta, and Electric, generally show their character when you listen to them louder through good headphones. A lot of Instinct stuff I really didn't vibe with when I was just using a pair of earpods (the wired ones), but when I got a pair of Audio Technicas, or my wireless Sony headphones, that and a lot of other trance/house music really opened up to me. Little details like the rolling thunder of the trance-style drums or the reverb on a synth stab start to show. Louder listening levels let me hear a greater range of the song, and the better headphones meant frequencies and details weren't getting left out. Granted, for you they may not be your cup of tea, but give them a try at that listening level and see if they become not-boring. The rest I mostly agree with though. I don't know why riddim and dubstep these days prides itself in being intentionally offbeat. It sounds horrible.

I personally don't like the way this ranking goes, because it's just so many different genres that everyone will have completely different opinions simply because of preference, not the quality. I do realize it's not an objective take, but I still don't see a point in making such a list, (It's a good way for people to discover new artists tho) Most points you presented like "empty", "weird" or "messy" are basically how these genres usually are (Like for example minimal house will always be kinda empty because it's supposed to be like that and it's not a flaw) but I do agree that the 1. spot is pretty bad lol. And that GG girl making that alt punk doesn't fit on monstercat plus her last song on the list really is bad lol. Overall fun video but I don't see a point to showcase songs in a negative light just because you don't enjoy them. I think a format where you share your favorites tracks of the year is better and it should end at that, but Hey, you do you I'm not salty or anything and this comment ended up so long I kinda feel dumb lol. Most of this list I agree with, although seeing The Dark at #5 hurts. Sugar isn't my least favorite of the year, surprisingly enough.

I personally think the vocoding / voicebox stuff in electric are really clean and well made, the pitch shifted layers and sub bass that turn it into a bass/-vocal combo are super compelling, and are really interesting. eat sleep rage gives me big ivan vibes. after some two-step hardcore or jersey club typa shit, something that has pulses only on the 1 and 3 is a really nice breakup. I feel like punctual has some really good house production. It definitely has it's place, just not in the bass music scene, and I don't think that's where they're aiming to hit. new worlds isn't very messy, it's more or less generic in terms of color bass. The bass in that particular clip is the kind of thing you'd get by turning the pitching knob in pitchmap to 99%, and it's a little abrasive. The half-note triplets aren't off-beat though, they're just a polyrhythm. The drop switches from straight notes to triplets a lot so there's a bit of an 'off-tempo' vibe to it, but it's still in the grid, just not contained to a single beat. Some of the GG Magree on this list seems a little undeserved. It's not bad production, it's just not something that's on monstercat a lot. A more diverse lineup is defenitely very interesting. Vitamin R is CRAZZYYYYYYY I think it's great that Jon is experimenting with getting different sounds on, and this atonal mess tickles my brain like infekt does.

Groovemasta is a banger though

#17 - I would honestly rather listen to this than half of the Extinction Level Event LP #16 - Did like the chants in the pre-drops (they're from actual people who were in Ray Volpe's shows shouting "EAT SLEEP RAGE" while this was just an ID or smth), but otherwise pretty standard #15 - It really had to be this guy who started the Tech House invasion, at least Fever is kinda addicting #14 - Sounds like the stuff he might release on Disciple #13 - I do know the appeal for this kind of stuff but I prefer stuff like Deja Reve and King a lot more #12 - I'd rather listen to Vitamin R over this #11 - Honestly very forgettable and not worth the hype, if there was any at all #10 - Still badass enough #9 & #8 - I don't mind the vocals because Nostalgix bass house is just that badass #7 - How Codd Dubz got into Manstercot is just so fucking hilarious #6 - It's alright I guess #5 - WHIPPED CREAM does some pretty unique stuff these days, I'll give her that. It ain't my taste unfortunately. Unless it's Light of Mine or Shouldn't. What I think bothers me most in this list is: Repeating - Yeah, it does that... way too much. Like it's to the point where I'd just listen to something else. Daybreak - Production is a bit better, but it's still relatively boring and generic, and yet again, repetitious vocals to drag it down. Vitamin R - Yeah, this feels more Disciple than Monstercat. I know there's been some riddim on the label, but I'm not really used to it, and there's very specific riddim tracks that have really caught my eye, most of them being off-label. The World Is So Fked Up - Lyrics just don't sit with me at all, either. Production is alright, but yeah the lyrics aren't a good fit. Beat It Up - What is that sample? And seriously? On top of that, boring as all hell. How did they even let that through? Groovemasta - God, Instinct really fell down cause of stuff like this... Sugar - I forgot this exists. I think I could get behind King, since the midtempo is what carries it. Turn Me On sounds more like something you'd hear on a rock station. I'm behind on a lot since I essentially fell out of Monstercat, but I'm slowly making a return with some hits here and there.

I actually like most of these What I like: house, alternative/indie, hip hop/rap What I don't like: screeches, cheesy future bass Rated on enjoyment, where 10 is the best I expect from Monstercat Electric - 10/10 - idk you just gotta hit replay Eat Sleep Rage - 2/10 - screechy Repeating - 8/10 New Worlds - 4.5/10 Be Careful What You Say - 7.5/10 - sounds like a classic, honestly Ruin U - 0.5/10 - haha sorry no. solid last place for me. 17. It could be longer but it’s good for what it is. Kinda just there. 16. This track has just fallen off over time. I like the idea of the sporadic drops but it does not work here. I can understand why this would be liked tho. 15. This is very empty and while it’s not bad, it’s not a niche of house I usually enjoy. Probably the worst Punctual on the label, but Punctual is cracked so this doesn’t mean much. 14. Indeed a bit messy, just a major sound design flex that would’ve done more pattern wise. 13. This one is REALLY good, solid vocals, simple but catchy rock production, nothing to hate here. 12. GG delivered here in the offdrops, but the drops from LEVEL UP bring this down a ton. 11. This is more disappointing than bad. This being generic brings it down, especially considering BIJOU took part in this. 10. This one is not bad, simple but it works. Not much else to say about it. 9. This one is really catchy, solid drops and I’m hype for this EP. 8. The Nicki Minaj comment here is way off, their rap styles are not even similar. Another catchy house tune. 7. SQISHI hard carried this, actually not bad. 6. This one is weird and a little short but I like it. 5. This is a hugely unexpected vocal direction from Jasiah and a huge collab, best one on this list and imo should’ve been on BO2023. 4. Like the sound design, but feels a bit empty. 3. This is really reminiscent of Nirvana and doesn’t do much for me. 2. I don’t like the pattern here, and it’s definitely boring. 1. The lyrics are questionable and the beat is boring, probably agree this is the worst of the year. At the end of the day, I disagree with a lot of this vid but we all have our opinions sooooooo 🤷

I've seen a lot of people diss this and idk, its fun 8/10 16 - It's fine, typical headbanger stuff 6/10 15 - I will stand as one of the few Instinct House enjoyers lol. I vibe with this pretty hard honestly 8/10 14 - Still dont care for this one 4/10 13 - I've been on a rock mood recently and GG's tunes honestly are right up my alley. I think she has a really cool style of rock but I feel like it def isnt for most Monstercat enjoyers. 7/10 12 - This one is fine, Level Up has made some bangers honestly 5/10 11 - Literally one of the biggest slept on tracks released this year. This one is such a vibe. When you're in a club setting, it hits the spot too 9.5/10 10 - Honestly really vibey. 7.5/10 9 - All of the Nostalgix tunes released on the label honestly seem like both artists involved just had a blast making the song and thats just how I treat it. This one is a bit better production wise but I still really like the vocals 8/10 8 - Now this is the track that I think the vocals stand out way more than the production. I'm a pretty decent fan on Rico Nasty and seeing her on the label this year was really cool. She has a really fun verse, similar in style to what I feel Niki could do on a track but the production is what brings it down a bit. Still an absolutely fun track. 8.5/10 7 - Probably one of the worst songs released not only on the label but of the year. This riddim shit is so out dated 1/10 6 - Hardcore vibe honestly, Honestly reminds me of some early 2000s punk shit 7.5/10 5 - I never understood why people hated this one, I think it really stands out 8/10 4 - This one is so much fun. 8.5/10 3 - This is the only one I can say just isnt for me. Though my girlfriend really really likes this song. Its hella punk vibes. Music video is honestly doesnt bother me. Shes just doin her thaaaang 6/10 2 - Another one that's just super fun. Listening to it on its own is what ever but if you're in a club and this comes on with that build and then the bass just comes at you, GAWD DAMN does that hit 9/10 1 - Another one that is super fun to listen to. Fun and danceable tune that doesnt really need to be anything special 8.5/10 I hope house is expanded upon in 2024. I would love to see some disco house or some more funky shit. Honestly for me, uncaged really fell off this year with just boring headbanger stuff or DnB which I never really cared for. A lot of the house released this year honestly was really solid
