"Who Can It Be Now?" was the first single Men at Work released in the US, and it became a huge hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their album "Business As Usual" was number 1 in the US for 15 weeks, a record at the time for longest stay at number 1 for a debut album. The famous saxophone part originally didn't come in until the middle of the song, which suited the band when they played it in bars. But when they recorded it, producer Peter McIan identified the sax as a hook and moved it to the beginning of the song, also making it more prominent throughout. This opening sax riff made the song instantly identifiable.
Madness are an English ska and pop band who formed in 1976. They're kind of a "one-hit-wonder" in the US (ie, "Our House" (1982), which is definitely a great song), but they've had so many more hit somgs in the UK. For one particular UK hit "Baggy Trousers" (1980), the band's saxophone player, Lee Thompson, decided he wanted to fly through the air for his solo, with the use of wires hanging from a crane. Worth watching this video!
"Overkill" was so far ahead of its time by them. I honestly think one of the members had to be neurodivergent. Such an incredible song about personal anxiety and overthinking.

Should also check out "Overkill" and "It's a Mistake" from their second album "Cargo." Great songs! Great album! Cargo was recorded and finished by mid-1982, but its release was pushed back due to the continued success of their debut album, "Business as Usual." Cargo was also the last Men at Work album to feature the original lineup.
I love Men at Work!! Thanks BP! They are all so gifted and talented! I have been a fan since they arrived on the scene and love all of their songs when they were together. Colin Hay is still going strong but I don't know about the other band members. They have so many amazing songs that are so special to me!! Colin Hay’s voice is so rich, and he’s so playful with vocalization. They don’t phone in their harmonies; 7:42 they are gorgeous. This album came out when I was a kid, and the humor of the videos kind of hid the darker tones. OVERKILL is like a face-to-face talk about mental health, and it’s my favorite. ❤️
From Sept to Oct 1982, Men At Work were the opening act for Fleetwood Mac during their short US tour to promote their thirteenth studio album, Mirage. By the end of the tour, Men At Work's debut US single "Who Can It Be Now?" was a US number 1 hit. The single "Down Under" was released while "Who Can It Be Now?" was still in the US top ten list. Down Under entered the US charts at Number 79 and ten weeks later, it also went to Number 1. By January 1983, Men at Work had the top album and single in both the US and the UK - never previously achieved by an Australian act.

When I was still working, I had had enough of people, and spoke of buying a cabin, on a mountain, where there weren't any people. This track was my theme song. My two podmates would sing it to me from time to time. Since retiring, I am much more sociable now....and there is nothing wrong with my state of mental health. :)
Greg Ham is the sax player, he also played flute, organ, piano, and synthesizer. Sadly he past away in 2012 at 58years old. The Eastwood movie was Grand Torino.

The beat does sound like Every Breath You Take😂 As a child of the 80's, and my mind taking everything literal, all 80's hits scared the shhttt outta me. And a lot of videos were post apocalyptic

The lead singers name is Colin Hay he was born in Scotland but has lived in Australia for most of his life. He is a great singer and Men at work like many other Australian bands from the 70s 80s that I grew up with where awsome. Movie with Clint is '"Grand Torino". Loved your comment about "not being able to please everyone." You've gotta check out Ricky Nelson singing "Went to a Garden Party." In 1981, this song remained on the charts for 24 weeks, reaching number 2. When the album dropped the first week of November 1981 they were so popular we gave our son born November 29th Colin as a middle name after the lead singer of Men at Work
When this song came out it was the time of the heavy cocaine use. My older brother was into that and even sold weed, and he flat out told me that to him this was clearly written about the paranoia of someone like him, stuck in his apt worried about cops or other bad elements of the drug trade showing up at his door.
As someone with severe social anxiety caused by trauma and preexisting mental disorders, this song has become one that closely describes my mental state at any given time. Being physically disabled doesn't help the matter either. Ffs commenting on posts makes up the bulk of my human interaction, and even that is a struggle. I'm seeing a psychiatrist and a psychologist; and I've reached the stage where it's up to me to help myself, but I feel like I'm swimming through a sea of molasses in the dark with an anchor on my back, just trying to make it to shore. Therapy has helped to lessen the weight of the anchor, and the life preservers thrown to me by loved ones have kept me afloat so far, but the Black ichor is unyielding and the lighthouse has long since gone dark. However futile it might be, I still persist. Whether the reason is love or spite, it doesn't matter. Tonight, I fight. Sorry, I just needed to get this out somewhere. I appreciate you, random stranger on the internet, for taking the time to read this. Be well, and stay safe. Addendum: This is just me trying to get my thoughts out, and nothing more. I thought I should clarify that just in case anyone is worried.
I got the compound disability roulette too. Physical, mental, and neurological disabilities, and the ability to socialise is zero. After 6 hospitalisations in 22 I got to the same point as you, only I can help myself. I've had psychs quit since I'm complex and off the charts way past dangerous depression. But yeah, I pour myself into my stupid music and that's keeping me going. One day I'll make something worthwhile, but it's really pointless. A delusion to keep moving forward... And breathing. Keep on keeping on other random person, and well done leaving a comment. Even that's hard, right?
I can sympathize with you. I dealt with this paralysing illness for 30 years. People have no idea the difficulties from this illness. I still get surprised with new symptoms after all this time. The physical pain is unbearable. It's not oh poor pitiful me. The drugs can leave you with feelings of dementia. I live in an HOA for 55 and older. I have never met so many fools with nothing but time to be difficult. ☠️👺🐴🍑
During this era, there was kind of an interesting sub-trend trend of songs themed on stalkers/home invaders, and general paranoia. Another good example would be Rockwell’s “Somebody’s watching me.”

Couple of artists you may want to listen to, Chris Stapleton (Tennessee Whiskey), and from good old Manchester England - The Stone Roses, from Waterfall, She Bangs the Drums, I am the Resurrection, What the World is waiting for. That movie would be 'Gran Torino'. And this was definitely a hit, but I prefer to remember it as the feelgood music of my childhood. 2 rec's: Yazoo - 'Midnight' and 'Connected' by Stereo MC's And the theme her is not about external (strangers nagging) but internal problems, like anxiety, social awkwardness etc.

Met Colin James Haye when he was doing solo shows at the Big Red at the Adelaide Fringe and I was working with The Fat Elvis'. Nice guy, but with his lazy eye, you never knew if he was talking to you or someone else.😂
