Phil wrote this song after traveling through Washington DC on his bus. going to the concert venue. He said he never saw so much human suffering. He was so affected by it, he passed around a donation basket at his concerts and doubled whatever was collected at every concert he performed after that.
Can confirm this. Saw him at MSG-NYC for this tour, which was UNBELEIVABL & 3 hrs long, he asked that we'd please donate instead of buying any of his concert merchandise. Stand up guy & GREATEST FREAKIN DRUMMER EVER!
D.C s horrible, I can remember in 90's the veterans sleeping on the vents to keep warm, and people setting in doorways begging. It's like this everywhere, I myself have lived 7 years with no running water, because my town wants 150 grand to run it to my house, and I'm not important enough in my state for them to do it. Our govt has forgotten us.
He can’t drum anymore. His son is drumming for him now. His daughter, Lily Collins, is the star of the Netflix hit, “Emily in Paris”. She regularly updates fans on social media about her dad’s condition and current health.
I’m a 73 year old white woman, a widow. The more I watch your reaction videos the more I learn about you but more importantly I learn more about the world through your eyes. I’ve never really been exposed to rappers and hip hop, that all came along after my music days were the most important things to me. I watched some of your Black Pegasus rapper music after I had watched some of your reaction videos. I’m glad I was exposed to you in that order. I would never have guessed that rapper was a devoted family man and a Christian. Talk about not judging a book by its cover. Or judging the rapper by his teeth (I say that because you had some narly gold teeth in one of your videos. LOL. ) You taught me a good lesson, a fresher course, to look deeper than the outward appearance. I don’t know you, but, I think I have gotten to know your heart especially while watching your reaction to this Phil Collins song from 1989. You are awesome and it seems you have your priorities straight. Condolences for losing your Mom. She’d be proud of who and what her son turned out to be. Your words make a difference for the good of the world.
He's basically saying that compared to all the people in poverty and suffering. People like you and me with a roof over our heads and food in our tummies, we live in paradise compared to them.
This is a heavy one. I give money without judgement, spend it on whatever gets you through the day. If you want to see more of Phils character, check out him and Philip Bailey - Easy Lover
People hate on homeless people who don’t want food given to them (from random strangers). They don’t realize a lot of people purposefully tamper with it putting glass in it or dog feces because they think it’s funny. I got ejected from a rollover crash on the highway and was in a coma for a week and spent months recovering. I was prescribed opioids and was on it for a few years til the DEA cracked down and all the patients were given a months worth of meds and basically cut off cold turkey since no one wanted to take patients on long term opioids. You basically became radioactive. So it obviously doesn’t end well. I eventually turned to heroin like everyone else. I did get clean and have 4 years clean after finding what worked for me (suboxone). But yeah I see people begging on the el and subway and I will just ask if they are dopesick. If they are I give them enough to “get well” because I have been there and know that feeling.
The honest open question about that is, are you actually doing any good at all at that point? It seems clear actually helping would be to find out the individual circumstances and spend the time and effort to actually provide the needed help to the individual, but does giving drug money to a drug user on the streets do any good and also what damage is that money actually potentially doing (supporting the entire drug dealing network, violence, etc) beyond keeping a drug user high and worthless. What if the drugs you helped them buy actually killed them? Is that helping? If you saw someone in an entirely different circumstance doing something self destructive would you also mindlessly offer them help destroying themselves? I'm really not trying to fight against someone else's alternative views here, but just trying to make sure people actually think about the potential negative consequences not just that any attempt at charity must be good because giving can never be bad or immoral. It seems the default position these days that the most minimal "altruistic" gesture is seen as so incredibly noble and what one must to do be the least bit noble and I think that deserves heavy critique and I don't think it's negative/deadly consequences deserve to be so easily and quickly pushed aside in the name of "helping". Helping ought to only count as help if it actually improves the situation for the better and not just for 2 seconds before the person dies. I think an honest conversation all the way around this is necessary and I'm willing to have it.
@@michaelrudolph7003 I totally get where you are coming from and agree with you to a degree. I neither have the expertise nor the resources to offer that kind of guidance I'm sad to say. I do however have an hour of my time for a cuppa and a chat and an odd £10 to give freely to anyone in need of them. And again it is given without judgement of how that money is spent.
@@michaelrudolph7003an old man asked me for money on the street a while back, I asked what he was going to spend it on, he said “alcohol, it’s all I have left, there’s a better chance than not I’ll die out here, alcohol” I gave him the money. There’s programs but they don’t actually take time to help, and without an address or S.S. Card try getting a job. Once you’ve hit that bottom getting out is almost impossible.
@@michaelrudolph7003 if you gave money without cruel intentions, it doesnt matter what they use the money for, that is between them and their conscience, you gave with a good heart and have gone.
I live in CO also I used to be homeless and part of being part of The Denver Rescue Mission I would help out in the soup kitchens and Salvation Army. Everyone has a story not everyone is on drugs or alcohol! I never thought I would be in that situation but I was I left an abusive situation to make a better life for my kids and myself! I love this song because he is addressing the world not just one country! God Bless You all and remember the song Their are angles among us!
❤ I'm glad you're not in the situation anymore and that there was help out there and I'm sure it wasn't enough. I always loved this song because of stories like yours. You can't judge someone when you don't their story. God bless you and your kids❤
I live in CO, the homeless situation is so unfortunate. I help when and however I can. Some people tell me "don't help them they'll just use it for drugs" but I say It's not my place to judge, if I can't give without judgement then I shouldn't be giving. God Bless God's people...the poor, the addicted, the imprisoned, the suffering...for the world shall be theirs!
I feel the same way. I don't want to feed the addiction with money, but I will buy anyone a meal. I was in one of my favorite restaurants for lunch at work one day and a homeless man came in asking for something to eat from the patrons. Everyone ignored him. I went to him, brought him to the counter and told him to order anything he wanted. He ordered a full steak meal (this was a Lebanese place) and a drink. It cost me $20, only 1/2 hour of work for me, but everything to him. He cried when he thanked me, and I was blessed for the rest of the day for his gratitude.
You and I have a home, food and clothes. Compared to those who have nothing, we are living in paradise. First few times I saw this video I cried. But Phil also gave some proceeds from his concerts to homeless shelters. So he was/is doing his part.
Phil became the drummer for Genesis in 1970, at age 19. He took over the role of lead singer in 1975 following the departure of Peter Gabriel. Phil began a successful solo career in the 1980s. "Another Day in Paradise", the whole song focuses on Phil encouraging us to be more sympathetic to the plights of the homeless and less fortunate in our societies. So, whenever we see someone struggling with homelessness, we should remember how blessed we are because we are in "paradise" as compared to the helpless poor.
This video came out in the late 1980's when the homeless population exploded in the United States. Something to know about Phil Collins is that not only did he use this song to raise money for homeless programs, but he also played both Live Aid concerts which were created to raise funds for Ethiopian famine relief.
@@llothar68 I can agree that the homeless population is larger today, however that has been because of a steady increase since then. Though there was a similar explosion around 2008.
So proud of you BP. You're a reference worth looking up to. People getting mad at you for not knowing something is just shameful - don't they see you _learning_?!? I mean, in this world, getting people to have an open-enough mind to put something new in there is a feat in and of itself. That's worth celebrating, appreciating, and reinforcing! So ignore the haters man. You're golden and those who bother to know you enough see that immediately. Sending love to you and your beautiful family
He was telling us to think twice as we pass by these unfortunate individuals on the street, …to remember for us, it’s paradise compared to these poor people who need, asking for help…and basically calling us out for just passing by without regard. Phil was also an amazing songwriter. Deep. Meaningful. One of the greats.
Compassion and empathy are some of the best qualities a person can have. Sadly many people only care for family and friends. Remember, it could be you on the streets. You never know what life will bring you. Be kind. One love BP! Cheers!
In 1992 I traveled from Australia to San Francisco for two weeks , I could not believe the homeless people on the streets. I know it’s bad here too now but it’s good to bring this to light and live with a generous heart because you never know where you might be tomorrow. Yes it starts with ourselves.
Another one I can cross off my list! 😊 I love Phil solo and everything he did with Genesis! Way too many great songs to list, but Land of confusion is one of my favs! The video is crazy!
He's talking to us - listeners and viewers. When we constantly complaining about everything, but there are millions of people for whom roof over the head, food and clothes are actually a paradise in which we are living our everyday lives.
It's clear to me he's addressing the state of the world. The human condition is universal in all it's aspects (good & bad). Thanks for the heartfelt reaction, bro. I appreciate the artists who keep these issues front and center along with all the other forms of expression that they delve into. Art, (any art) is the perfect platform for addressing all of these situations. You get it, Pegasus. I appreciate that, too.
There are plenty of homeless here in Uppsala Sweden. Early mornings when I go to work I see them sleeping whenever they can around the station in town. Even outside in snow and -20C this winter. Of course there are mental problems and drugs playing a huge part in it here not just poverty here.
Yes, he did the same in Australia. Passed a bucket around each concert and asked for one dollar from everyone and then doubled it. Australia wide concerts. Special person. On another note , keep diving into old music especially from 60/70s. 🇦🇺
The title says it all. Another Day In Paradise to me is be grateful for what you have because a lot of people have less or very little. I am going through some stuff myself presently and appreciate the little things. Another great job by you with this one. I also live in Colorado Springs and the homeless situation is growing everyday.
Phil has so many wonderful songs. Some of my favourites are 'Against all odds', 'I wish it would rain down' (original music video is epic), 'You can't hurry love' (a very fun music video) and 'I can't dance ' by Genesis... honestly the list could go on and on. He is a fantastic musician and songwriter.
I've never been in the situation of any other people in the clip but it still gets me to near tears it hits right in the feels.... one billion people in the world at that time didn't have shelter.....
My husband was friends with Phil Collins back in the day when he lived in shalford surrey uk, he uses to drink in the pub the queen Vic. His is wife asked my husband to go with her to pick up a new car which Phil brought for her birthday. This was at the height of his fame in-between concerts and usually played pool on a Sunday night.
1989 the song was released... It's always brought tears to my eyes but its more than that for me today. I'm just going to hit the highlights on my story but I'm betting you'll get the picture... I got a call from a friend a few years ago asking me to pick up her mom from the airport so off I go. You know the drill, seatbelt, engine on, radio set, and your off. I see I need gas and just as I'm pulling up to the intersection, I hear the part of this song where he says, "she's got blisters on the soles of her feet..." starts playing in my head, mind you, there is a different song on the radio. I pull through the intersection, turn into the 7-11 for gas and have to go inside. There sitting on the concrete up against the building was a woman who was obviously homeless, I still got that song playing in my head, but I'm in a hurry, you know what I mean? She walks up to the car while I'm pumping gas and asks for a ride and as much as I wanted to not pick up a homeless woman, that song got louder in my head, so I agreed. She gets in the car and right away I see that she has no shoes on only socks and as I look, I see that she has walked in those socks for so long that the heels and toes are worn through and the calluses on her heels are cracked. Now, I like to say I don't have any money, but this is where the Lord reminded me, I dug through a full drawer of socks, 2 pair of boots, 5 pair of dress shoes and 3 pairs of sneakers for what I put on my feet before I left the house. That song is playing in my head and I'm suddenly realizing this is no chance meeting... As we drove down the hwy, she begins arguing with ... someone in her head... and I began praying... 30 miles I prayed for her release from the demons that were talking to her... I don't know what they wanted her to do, but I kept praying and she kept refusing... Her name is Rose... she got out of my car that day with my shoes, socks, Bible, cash, hugging me and praising God. I left a piece of my heart with a stranger that day, and I pray for her daily... If you hear the Holy Spirit follow him in faith and he will work the Father's will through you...
Phil Collins is a gift to the Universe !!!! These musical artists were not ahead of their time. They were putting it out there that we had/have a serious problem on our planet. We ‘now older folks’ were wanting change back then…. Sadly nothing’s changed.
This won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. It also won the 1990 Brit Award for Best Single. >> Collins told The Mail on Sunday: "I wrote this after being in Washington DC where I was amazed by how many people I saw living in boxes." He also explained in a Musician interview: "I remember when we played Washington... Washington was almost at a standstill and these people were trying to sleep on the grills where all the hot air was coming up, and you could see that it was in the shadow of Capitol Hill. I thought it was an extraordinary contradiction. Collins met the problem of homelessness face-to-face in London while cutting this single. He remembers leaving the studio and seeing a homeless woman with two children who were begging for money. While the song shines a light on the issue, it also made him realize that, when confronted with it, he reacted the same as everyone else. "What (the song) deals with is people's awkwardness with it. When it happened to me, I just walked straight past. I thought, I'm doing the same thing as everybody else... I felt awkward. I didn't ignore her but at the same time I didn't stop and give her some money... That's what the song deals with, people just sort of starting to pretend it's not happening. Collins was criticized by the English press for singing about the poor despite being wealthy ("This is one I got a lot of flak for because I'm a multimillionaire"). He responded in a New York Times interview: "When I drive down the street, I see the same things everyone else sees. It's a misconception that if you have a lot of money you're somehow out of touch with reality." 👍🏻🤩🏴
Phil Collins is my generation who fought for civil rights homelessness and women’s rights. I don’t know if any generation will ever be that involved again. I lived through farmers getting their farms taking away from them because they were encouraged to borrow and then couldn’t pay their bills. You should watch the movie Country with Sam Shepard and Jessica Lange. But Homelessness has been a problem for many years. And my generation did a lot, a lot. Bob Geldorf and musicians did a couple of concerts for Africa. The situation was horrible there. They raised an enormous amount. Willie Nelson and a lot of country artists did concerts for the farmers who were loosing their farms. It was awful. Research it.
That movie, "Country" is a masterpiece. Wow, I need to watch it again. Jessica Lange, along with Sissy Spacek and Meryl Streep, are the holy-trinity of acting for me. Last night, I was surprised and happy to see Jessica Lange on the Academy Awards, presenting Best Actress. Unfortunately, botox ruined her face. So sad. If I were a director I would love to cast her in a movie but I wouldn't now. Like Meg Ryan, Jessica Lange's face is transformed beyond redemption. Sissy and Meryl still seem to look great, however.
As an Indigenous Native American Christian from N. California …I don’t care about someone else’s choices. I want to give more than what my sorry norms become…I want to give abundantly, and that’s my choice. Phill has always been an STUNNING PERFORMER and TRUE ARTIST. My grand daughter just returned from a South American Country trip with one of her Teacher’s and I’m happy because reality of what it’s truly like in other places is important to the younger generation. I texted her that Im happy she seen the TRUTH…even the poor have access to clean water and we even have sanitary facilities. Thank you BP for your commentary. Currently, the Nazarene Church is a sheltering 60 families who are suffering because of the fires in my area. Just a shout out to them. I encourage people to do all you can for your own Community. Once again, PHIL is an AMAZING writer and Performer from my youth.
I really like the way he sings "paradise.. Just think about it". How much we are taking for granted. Even the little things in life.. I need to listen this song more often. Thank you for reminding me ❤
The 80s were a period of severe recession and economic troubles. I remember my father being laid off during that time and the boxes of government cheese. It was a tough time across the board. This song reminds me of Bruce Hornsby's "The way it is" and also Tom MacDonald's "Castles" about looking around yourself and really SEEING the stories/struggles of the world around you. Maybe you can help...maybe you can't...but you have to see it before you can make that determination.
Love this song! ❤ I remember my mom playing this record in our living room & me and my sis laying on the floor with the record insert & reading along with the lyrics and singing along. We'd always listen to this one a few times!
He is one of the best drummers ever, an exceptional songwriter, and an amazing voice singing heartfelt songs. Fact you might not know though is he also could play great on piano/keyboard, it's him playing it for this song.
Thank you for this. This will always be a very important topic. I have so much trouble listening to this song since I work with homeless people. Because, they are real people, with pasts, without future if they are not helped....
I was born on the base near Colorado. I don't remember so many homeless in Denver or Colorado Springs. I always help when I can. Ive even taken a leap of faith and brought several people home with me. Especially when I've seen children. And man have I been lectured. So far everything's worked out and I'm still here.
I absolutely love your commentary because so often it includes heart and true love for your fellow humans. We can have fun, but we can remember to care. Thank you for what you do.
If you truly want to experience Phil Collins and his talents you must listen to these genius songs by him! Mama I Wish It Would Rain Down I Don't Care Anymore Against All Odds Long, Long, way To Go You're Welcome!!
I haven't heard this song for about 30 years. Still as great today as it was then and still as powerful. Phil Collins was the soundtrack of my childhood and teenage years. Against all Odds (Take a look at me now) is a great song, Sssudio, Easy Lover with Phillip Bailey, You can't hurry love, Separate Lives with Marilyn Martin. The three main albums I grew up on were Face Value, No Jacket Required and ...But Seriously.
My husband and I are not rich but we give to the food kitchen we give clothes and money. All the world needs is love and kindness. My heart breaks when I see and hear this song. These are our fellow humans. Be a giver god will bless you for your kind heart ! I love all of you.
I live winters in a modestly poor town in Costa Rica. The rest of the year, I come home to Denver, CO. In the past 3-4 years, I feel like I'm in more of a third world country when I'm HERE, in the US. It has gotten absolutely insane.
This is one of those songs that pushes Empathy development. The understanding of other's experience in life and perspective on the world you think you know. Not always comfortable to go through, but always worthwhile.
You should be proud of yourself. At first I wasn't wasn't really sure about your channel. But something kept drawing me back. And now I just love you and your channel. Keep up the fantastic work and dont change.
When I hear this song, and he says think twice, that could be me. So my mission is to be kind and try to help as an individual to help another individual. Get involved. Phil gets it.
Phil is an awesome singer and storyteller...I just let my 10yr old grandson listen to him the other day, HOOKED! You know at what age to grab'em, next CCR! But hitting on the message-There is so much that can be done but (wait now) they have to want to be helped...My 40yr old nephew has been homeless (we live in TN) for two years now...We have seen him twice in that time...I have done everything but get on my knees and grab him and beg...We have told him get the proper help but he says no, I can't or won't do it, this allows me the freedom to use various drugs...
You are so correct about looking people in their eyes and acknowledging them and giving them value, food feeds... money does not. i agree i try to give food and not money! you are truly a voice in the dark, please never stop letting us know where we are.
Your observations regarding world plight in general are spot on, don’t apologize. As for this song, it takes me back to my 13 year old self listening to the countdown on the radio. This song, along with Lou Gramm “Just Between You and Me” and Rod Stewart “Downtown Train”. All grouped together in my mind for that time.
Alltime classic . Thank you . Would love to see Genesis - No son of mine - and - Mama - . And from Phil Collins maybe you can react to True Colours . And - A groovy kind of love .
I saw you riding your head and thought ohhh boy, you'll see. I have only EVER had help in London off homeless people and I've given my last quid £ to him in 1989 because he helped me escape through the tubes from my eldest sons dad, he still wants me dead and i like that😂😂😂😂😂😂 Phil Collins walked about with his eyes open and saw the grass was never greener ❤
Music from my generation of the 70’s and 80’s had amazing lyrics and deep meaning to their songs. It touches your heart and you could relate to the lyrics. I love watching your reactions and you getting the deep meanings to the songs. Lots are plain fun and catchy but there are those that touch your soul. Thanks for sharing.
Fun fact: The Netflix show called Emily in Paris stars Phil Collins' daughter Lily Collins. She's been in a lot of other movies and shows, also, and is a star in her own right. In fact, Phil Collins has joked that amongst Gen Z he is known as "Lily Collin's Dad" and they have no idea who he is.
