These guys came before Creed (1994), 3 Doors Down (1996) and NIckelback (1995). Those bands may have been influenced by STP. When STP came out, they were often accused of ripping off Pearl Jam even though STP (1989) also came before Pearl Jam (1990).

I remember watching an STP video and thinking it was Pearl Jam. That voice. That WAY of singing with the swallowed r's. Scott Stapp from Creed did it too, but MANY years later. It worked for ALL OF THEM.

Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Stone Temple Pilots were the pioneers of this particular sound in alternative rock. This is the Seattle alternative sound. Same time period as Nirvana. Nirvana had a bit of a different tempo and a bit grittier of a sound, but similar.

Ur not trippin! Pretty much all music in this genre from the 90s have a similar sound....Scott Weiland, the lead singer was definitely not gay....That was him and his band mates just fuckin around... He was married twice and had 2 children....He unfortunately died in 2015 due to a mix of alcohol and multiple drugs, like a lot of other artists from this time! U should definitely check out more tho! Creep, Vasoline, Big Empty, Dead and Bloated, Sex Type thing, and Plush were some of their bigger hits!

@@mariannetuite7411 This is a long post but hopefully you'll find it interesting and won't mind the length. I was never a huge Creed fan as my tastes leaned toward much heavier music at the time. BUT even I recognized that people unfairly gave them a hard time. They treated them as though they were just a bunch of commercial wannabes when the reality couldn't be further from the truth. Those who knew anything about the music scene or about the bands of the time knew that Creed was unique because they were actually a TRULY and COMPLETELY self-made act. For that reason they were kind of legends/a sign of hope to other independent/garage bands of the time. They were proof to those of us who had hopes of making it big that it was possible to succeed even without having the money/power of a record label behind you. Remember, this was way before RU-vid came along. Before YT made it so you could post your music, find your own audience via streaming or having a video somehow go viral and creating an overnight success of your band instantly. In some ways, its far easier to make that happen today than it ever was. At the time Creed was working their way up on the music scene the labels were pumping out cookie cutter acts left and right capitalizing on the whole grunge phenomenon. Getting any love/recognition from the music industry as an independent band was nearly impossible because the labels thought they had the formula down by then. Once a label feels it has the formula figured out it means they can toss together label groomed talent and then have complete control of the cookie cutter band. This means they don't have to deal with individual members "quirks" or difficulties of handling the more "unique" behaviors of the talents. Labels live for control and love not having to work to find the next big thing. Coming out of nowhere and getting recognition was not easy to do which is why so many bands of the time..if you dig behind the scenes, you found that they had connections to either other successful acts or powerful connections within the labels themselves. By contrast, Creed came out of nowhere, they scraped together $6,000 of their own money to fund and self-record their first album My Own Prison. They did it without record industry help or funding. They also sold and marketed their own shit by peddling their CD's at concerts they performed instead of having the benefit of a labels big money and advertising dollars behind them. Again, this was all before iTunes or Spotify existed so think about that. No streaming, and no radio play either because there were no labels to push them on stations. Since they couldn't get a record deal they founded their own music label. They were more real in that respect than 99%of the so called "real" rock bands that are idolized on the music scene if you think about it from that perspective alone. Stapp wrote the lyrics to every one of their songs. They didn't hire writers Tremonti is a beast on the guitar. The rest of the band became AlterBridge after Stapp left. There was a ton of talent there. They were a pretty misunderstood band and I think they took most of their hate due to the religion/faith based lyrics that Stapp was known to write which got them labeled as a Christian Rock group early on. Something they denied being but something that shouldn't matter anyway. Once they made it, the fact that they also got labeled as a "commercial, wannabe grunge" band is crazy to me. Imagine if you put in all that work only for people who don't know a thing to treat you like you were some pampered idiots who were given everything. Imaging being called that and then to be compared to supposedly "real" hard-working bands who were in fact actually the pampered ones.... and the pampered band being recognized for their hard work... can you even imagine? I can't. In the end, you can like our dislike the music but you cannot call them just another average commercial act. You cannot deny the drive, the ambition, the balls or the results. At one point they were the largest rock band in the world and they managed to do that with them being in charge of their own label. That's pretty impressive to me. I love rock but I dislike how close minded many rockers tend to be. They tend to throw a lot of shade and put out a lot of hate and bias towards other forms of music. They love to pretend to be qualified to judge who is real and who is fake when I most instances they are operating from a place of of zero knowledge, ignorance. I look forward to a time when there's less posturing and more interest in learning. Rock steals a lot from other forms of Music whether it be blues, r&b, country and in the past 20 plus years, from rap music as well. I said the word "steals" because I knew that would fire up some people who read this. I don't truly feel that way, rock has ALWAYS incorporated bits and pieces of other kinds of music since it was created and it's one of the things I've always loved about it. Rock has so many different forms and is ever-changing. It's Rock Fans who have a problem with changing, one that needs to disappear. I hope you didn't mind the novel length post. And I hope I gave you information you didn't know before. No I don't expect it's going to turn you into a tree fan, that wasn't my goal. I'm not much of one myself. If I was asked to choose a favorite by them I'd have to pick the tune Bullets maybe?

You are right. STP had a lot of big hits and their songs were awesome. Yet, the band itself was vastly under rated and almost overlooked in favor of some of the other bands of the time. It was a shame because STP was a great band. And they definitely had a lot of classic songs of the time. Actually around here there were two bands that were my favorites that people either did not know or overlooked. When I'd mention STP I actually got some blank looks and this from fans of the genre. Another band in my area that was overlooked was a blues rock band The Black Crowes. Man, I was crazy about the music and it was like no one knew who they were except me. Now they are remembered but, back in the early 90s...

Bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Nirvana were part of the "Grunge" late 80's early 90's sound. Many of their singers had that lowish baritone sound to their voice like Scott Weiland (here in STP), Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam and Layne Staley from Alice In Chains, all hearkening back to a Jim Morrison (The Doors) styled growl. Creed and Three Doors Down came later (they were labeled "Post Grunge"), but probably still had the same vocal style.
@mariannetuite7411
@mariannetuite7411 4 месяца назад
You took the words right out of my mouth. That original grunge sound really does lean heavily on Jim’s vocal stylings. It’s the reason I love it so much. Most of those post-grunge boys just tried too hard for me though. Lightning’s was captured in a bottle with The Doors, and again with the grunge scene.. Third time never was quite the charm imo

There was a vibe in the 90's and it was a return to the 60's... Almost. STP, Gin blossoms, Soundgarden, creed, bush. This was the last era you could nod at a stranger without the worry of getting shot. If they were in a bad mood they'd just laugh at you. If they got it they would just smile and nod. There was no urge to argue it. You either got it or you didn't, and it was okay either way.

STP was part of the grunge movement, Core was the first album I got that has Plush, Creep & Where The River Goes on it came out in 92-93, I believe. This was on the Purple album that came out in 96 or 97, I remember being a senior in HS (I graduated in May '97). They also have an MTV Unplugged. After Scott left, Chester sang with them for a bit (2013-2015), then they found a permanent lead Jeff Gutt. Their song Big Empty was on The Crow soundtrack, by request of the director - he asked the band for a song, they gave him one but after Brandon passed he asked if they could give him another one because the first was called "Only Dying", they understood why he didn't want to include that so they gave him the other.

Regarding "the sound," STP was criticized after the release of their first album for being Pearl Jam copycats. By the release of their second album, they had cemented their own sound, and you never heard the copycat accusation anymore. The DeLeo brothers (guitar and bass) definitely had a uniqueness to their tone, trading power chords for something closer to smooth jazz. You can really hear it in the band's third album. Their sound became so unique, that when they stopped recording, they left a big hole in rock music. I haven't heard anything like them since. ♥

The intro to the video for 'Interstate love song' by Stone Temple Pilots was inspired by silent movies of the early 20th century... Back in those days, movie theaters did not have sound to go w/ the films... Theaters would hire musicians to play an organ while the film played on the screen to provide a soundtrack... This Hollywood movie format became hugely popular worldwide because non-English speaking countries could watch and enjoy the movies without having to comprehend the dialogue (Each country could provide their own subtitles in their languages) Charlie Chaplin... Laurel & Hardy ... Buster Keaton ... Ben Turpin... were some of the stars of the comedy genre who could entertain audiences by their on-screen mannerisms. When technology was able to provide a soundtrack w/ the films, a lot of stars went out of business because they didn't sound the way they appeared on screen and didn't have the same appeal... Laurel & Hardy became a sensation because they sounded exactly how they looked... The 3 Stooges became a sensation in short films w/ sound. Charlie Chaplin refused to make a movie where he spoke on screen initially... But in 1936, he released the movie 'Modern Times' which was largely a silent movie... There was a portion of the movie where Chaplin's real voice was heard in a scene where he was singing... and he was singing rubbish - total gibberish... (It's called the 'Nonsense song') while he mimed a story w/ comedic effect. People did hear Charlie Chaplin's voice in the movie 'The Great Dictator'... where he ridiculed Adolf Hitler during World War II and also played a Jewish barber in his trademark image of 'the Tramp'... However, silent movies were done by that point. In 2011, there was a silent movie made as a French comedy-drama film - 'The Artist'... and the leading actor won an Oscar for his role.

I always thought of Stone Temple Pilots as like "second wave of grunge." You had bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Soul Asylum get popular, so record companies looked for more acts that were like them. I put Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins bands like that. They're not really newer, but their big records came out afterwards.

This sound started in the Seattle Grunge Movement in the mid-80s, began branching out into Cali in the early 90s, and then started to go mainstream. It makes sense you recognize the sound from groups who were "alternative rock." You should consider reacting to Napoleon by Ani Difranco. Her record label Righteous Babe Records, has a video up of one of her live performances. A cover of one of her songs, 32 Flavors, got some decent airplay around 2000.

You should check out Fall to Pieces by Velvet Revolver. He wa the front man with them along with Slash & Duff from GnR. This song & video will give you a look at Scott before he lost his battle to addiction. So sad.

I cant wait to hear your Creed reaction. I was a classic rock guy growing up in the 90's but i liked the modern rock too even into the NuMetal scene. I LOVED creed, and still like them. But the 3 members of Creed besides the singer, are now in other bands. Alter Bridge is made up of Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall, and Scott Phillips, all from Creed, with a powerhouse on vocals named Myles Kennedy. Myles also has some solo stuff, and another band called Slash with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators and their music kicks ass. If you couldnt tell by the name, the guitarist in that band is The one and only Slash from Guns n Roses. Mark Tremonti also has his own solo stuff that is great, marching in time is a masterpiece. And then Brian Marshall and scott Phillips are in a band called Projected with one of the guys from a band called Sevendust which kicks ass too. You should check out all of these bands. Also Nonpoint, just because. And Dirty Honey. And also Mammoth. Mammoth is fronted by Wolfgang VanHalen the son of The one and only Eddie VanHalen.

I ❤ STP! Saw them back in about 96 maybe 97! One of the best concerts ever! No, Scott Weiland isn’t gay (as far as I know). He’s just messing around with his band mates. More STP! Dead and Bloated, Crackerman, Sex Type Thing, Wicked Garden, Unglued, and Vasoline (just to name a few). I’d say, yes, maybe there is a “familiarity” within 90s grunge era. To tell the truth, I thought lead singer to Pearl Jam (Eddie Vedder) and lead singer to STP (Scott Weiland) were the same person and had 2 bands 🤷🏻‍♀️ lol 😂 until someone told me they otherwise 🤦🏽‍♀️ Great reaction! 😊

Grunge n post grunge. Stp, creed, 3d down and many other bands have that vocal style. Rap community is really tight about being unique as possible. Not that rock community isn't, but there's also an appreciation for styles n subgenres, as well as paying homage, and taking inspiration from other artists to a degree that it's sonically noticeable. Theres a art to it, as well as a respect

STP - First concert I ever went to. Red Rocks. The Meat Puppets opened up for them. Lost my virginity to their song Plush. This is PRE Creed, nickleback and all that - they came up during Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. No they are not dating.

Amazing band. I bought their first album and was blown away, especially by the intro song "Dead & Bloated". This group always had a more "raw, authentic" feel to me than the other 90s "heavy vocal singer" rock bands. They had so many hits, hard and softer rock. Try out "Plush" (both the studio and acoustic versions), as well as "Creep", "Vasoline", "Sour Girl", etc. 🙂

Creed came later. That's the 90s sound popularized by Nirvana and Pearl Jam. STP came a little after them

You're definitely right about that pocket of sound back then. You should check out Guano Apes-Lord of the Board sometime ..the band that inspired Tatiana from Jinjer .. And maybe Faithless , rap and dance ? 🤔

Grunge in the early 90s with Nirvana and such. The sound was similar in the y2k. Saw them in 2000 or 2001 in DC with Staind and Linkin Park( the new guys)

R.I.P Scott Weiland You're the same age as I am, this was majorly played by a lot of radio stations back in our day. (And no this doesn't sound ANYTHING LIKE FREAKING NICKLEBACK LOL). This was part of the Grunge movement STP was. This was back with Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, The Smashing Pumpkins, and so on.

You Are onto something. We called it grunge. Time period was 91-94 maybe 95. After that it was mostly bands piggy backing off the first bands. Major bands included Nirvana, Pearl jam-, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. STP was probably next best. Soundgarden's black hole sun would be a good review. My favorite Alice in chains is Don't Follow

Stone Temple Pilots were part of the grunge rock scene in the early 90's... they were around years before Creed and Nickleback... However, STP is from San Diego, unlike their Seattle grunge counterparts (Smashing Pumpkins were from Chicago) Stone Temple Pilots were the best w/ original lead singer Scott Weiland, who was a talented songwriter and vocalist... and was also an amazing performer on stage... Tragically, he struggled w/ he+++n addiction for years and mental issues... His addictions eroded his relationships and skills by 2011 and Scott Weiland was fired from STP as a result... He passed away in 2015 from drug-related causes (R.I.P.) Initially formed in the late 80's as Mighty Joe Young, the band was part of the 'alternative rock' scene before changing the name to Stone Temple Pilots (inspired by the 'STP' brand oil products) and signed in 1992 after the breakout success of Nirvana in 1991... STP was: brothers Robert DeLeo (bass), Dean DeLeo (guitar)... w/ Eric Kretz (drums) and Scott Weiland (vocals) STP released their debut album 'Core' in 1992... and by '93, the album was a huge hit in the grunge rock era of the early 90's... selling 8x platinum in the USA and scoring the hit singles - 'Sex type thing'... 'Plush' ... 'Creep' and 'Wicked garden'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘 Stone Temple Pilots also performed on MTV 'Unplugged' that year. 2nd album 'Purple' in 1994 charted at #1 and sold 6x platinum... they went for a different sound w/ hits like 'Vasoline' ... 'Interstate love song' ... 'Big empty' ... 🔥🔥🤘🤘But according to the band, this was when Scott Weiland started his spiral of erratic behavior due to substance abuse. 3rd album "Tiny music... songs from the Vatican gift shop' sold platinum in 1996, but marked a decline in commercial sales... STP tried to evolve away from 90's grunge rock and even incorporated 80's pop elements in singles like - 'Big bang baby' ... 'Lady picture show' ... STP was also missing from touring because of Scott Weiland's drug problems, so the album was poorly promoted as a result. In 1997, the band without Scott Weiland released an album as Talk Show... w/ singer Dave Coutts... but the album failed commercially... Scott Weiland's solo album '12 bar blues' also failed. In 1999, Stone Temple Pilots finally announced a tour to promote their new album 'No. 4'... it was a success, but Scott Weiland was arrested just before the album's release and they could not promote it until 2000 after Weiland was out of jail. It was a platinum success w/ the singles - 'Down' ... 'Sour girl' ... 'Atlanta'... In 2001, STP released 'Shangri-la-dee-da' w/ the singles 'Days of the week'... 'Hollywood b+++h'... but the album only sold gold in the US. STP split up by 2002. Scott Weiland joined Slash (lead guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), and Matt Sorum (drums) from Guns N' Roses... to form the band Velvet Revolver and scored a 2x platinum hit 'Contraband' in 2004... In 2007, their album 'Libertad' sold gold, but Weiland's erratic behavior split the band up by 2009... Robert and Dean DeLeo of STP recorded 1 album as Army of Anyone in 2006 ... w/ vocalist Richard Patrick (Filter) and drummer Ray Luzier of KoRn. Stone Temple Pilots announced a reunion tour in 2009 and a new self titled album in 2010... but old habits resulted in Scott Weiland being fired from the band and legal action between him and his former bandmates... Scott Weiland went on w/ his solo career and projects and sadly, died on tour in 2015. STP recorded the EP 'High rise' w/ singer Chester Bennington of Linkin Park... After Weiland's death, Stone Temple Pilots announced the addition of vocalist Jeff Gutt and have release 2 new albums since.
