My mom took me to a record store in the mall when I was a kid. I wanted to buy Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. The guy at the counter tells my mom "you don't want to buy this, it's crap." My mom asks what i should buy then. He said "Ride The Lightening." A Metallica fan was born that day.

I agree that their music before the "Black" album was their best and then "mellowed" out as I like to call it. I don't knock them for the change they made because we all, as we get older, make changes in our lives and many times that involves music and our styles of music. If I'm making sense. Lol! The song is related to the book For whom the bell tolls by Ernest Hemingway. The book deals with the Spanish Civil War and I believe there is even a scene near the end, where they are on a hill with no way of escape.

Old school Metallica is amazing... their first 4 albums Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets & And Justice for all... After that, they are more polished and the awesome songs are a little more spread out. Back in the day people said they sold out with 'Justice but I disagree. Justice is where they show off how technically amazing they have become... and after that they are more "polished"

Lars isn't a "bad" drummer. He's just not as flashy and technical as the guys that get the attention. You don't hear him doing crazy fills and wildly creative patterns like a lot of prog drummers. His drumming serves the purpose for Metallica's music extremely well, though. He's also a HUGE driving piece of the band and they wouldn't have become what they are without him. Respect the Lars!
@jasondimak5514
@jasondimak5514 3 года назад
The problem with Lars is what he himself admitted, he hasn't been the type of person to practice. Which in turn makes the live shows seem a lil off at times. He's a decent drummer but I think he could have been better especially with timing. My opinion anyways.
@marcusdedorsson8741
@marcusdedorsson8741 3 года назад
He is a lazy drummer. He admits it. He never plays the drums when doesnt need. All drummer miss sometime But its hard to be lazy when your in the biggest band. Like a drumteacher said about Lars ”He isnt afraid to lose his job”. Besides that Metallica would be what they are without him as a person and drummer. So Im not pissing on him. Full respect for what he have done to the metalscene.

First four Metallica albums are almost mandatory for metal. When they released the black album, it was both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because they became more mainstream and expanded their fan base. But a curse, because the die hard metal fans thought they went soft by going more radio friendly. By the time Load and Reload were released in the mid 90s, they became less metal and experimented with their sound, adding in elements of grunge and even blues and country. By then the fans were pretty much divided. It's been within the past decade or so that they went back to their roots and went back to metal. Death Magnetic and Hardwired have solid songs.
@NooDLES411911
@NooDLES411911 3 года назад
Load and reload have some great songs. They're not bad records per se, they just weren't metal records. At the time they got shit on for it but now that their careers have spanned over almost 40 years, you gotta appreciate everything they've done.
@horbags1181
@horbags1181 3 года назад
There are several songs on both Death Magnetic and Hardwired which wouldn't sound out of place on an early Metallica album."Confusion" off Hardwired is vintage Metallica.
@matthewdrake4385
@matthewdrake4385 3 года назад
You both are right. At the time when Load and Reload came out, some of the fans who had followed them since 81 or kill em all didn’t get what they were doing, but the more open minded fans were still accepting. I think the only miscues in their career have been st anger and the collaboration with Lou Reed called Lulu. I get that when you have a career lasting nearly 40 years, that it’s understandable to want to experiment with other sounds. I will also gladly admit that Metallica puts on a hell of a concert, having seen them two years ago.
@metaphoria3
@metaphoria3 3 года назад
There’s a few good songs off DM (Day that Never Comes, Unforgiven 3) same with Load and Reload (Ain’t My Bitch, 2x4, House that Jack Built, Poor Twisted Me, Hero of the Day, Fuel, Until it Sleeps, Bleeding Me, Fixxxer, Unforgiven 2) I rather like them for dif reasons same with Garaging (The Prince, Small Hours, Helpless, Astronomy) S&M (Call of the Ktulu, Devils Dance, No Leaf Clover, Outlaw Torn) and so on where I feel they lost there touch was the transitions that built anticipation/suspense and the songs were less of a unique thing demanding to be written and more ‘this is fun to play’ riffs somewhat clumsily stitched together
@margaretgreen5263
@margaretgreen5263 3 года назад
NooDLES411911 agreed! I always say that Metallica NEVER SOLD OUT, they just evolved! I remember when it happened too, they cut their hair (which I still think was such a shame) and became more mainstream. But remember the 90s really only had one metal band (American band) which was born in and survived the 90s grunge era, PANTERA. I love Metallica (with the exception of St. Anger, which even Metallica admits was not their best work)and do not see them as sell outs at all. They have been making music a long time and they are The fathers of American Metal (along with a few others, Slayer, Megadeath and Iron Maiden)! If people can take that band, Baby Metal seriously, then I think they can give Metallica a fucking break! 🤘🏻❤️

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" is a book written by Earnest Hemingway. It has to do with war, death, and the nature of the human condition (like all good art). This is from Ride the Lightning, which is only their second "studio album" but significantly far into their evolution as a band to be sure. You have heard that exact riff sampled many times by other artists. And yes... "Ride the Lightning" is slang for getting cooked in an electric chair. I'm sure I'll have secondary comments as this is one of the bands that helped to make me a metal-head.

This song became my favourite song ever after I saw a live version if it like 14 years ago. It was the BDO 2004 live version, from a fest in Australia. It not only made this song my favourite song ever. The lil' bass solo at the beginning of this live version pushed Robert Trujillo as one of my favourite bassists ever, and finished encouraging me picking up the bass.

@harryhurd2474

His drumming took a hit as he became more involved in the business side of Metallica. Most people still have issues with the whole Napster thing but they don’t know the whole story. There were other artists also fighting Napster before and at the same time as Lars was. It was about them sharing Metallica’s songs that weren’t released yet. Lars gets the most grief about it because he was the most vocal.

I'm an old school Metallica fan. That means I grew up with them back in the 80's during high school and consider their first 4 albums to be superior to the rest. The reason people say they sold out was because they did. Although by the time they released ...And Justice For All they were becoming one of the biggest metal bands at the time, they still were a Metal band and weren't getting mainstream exposure. That all changed starting with the song One and then the release of the Black album. They changed their sound to get more exposure thus, sell more records; and they did this for almost 2 decades. As far as Lars is concerned, I can name 10 drummers off the top of my head right now that blow him away. Yeah, I'm not a drummer myself so you can take that with a grain of salt, but as a Metal music fan of almost 40 years, I can make comparisons to other drummers; that's what we Metalheads do. His lack of skill isn't from a lack of confidence, it's from a lack of desire for self improvement. He's stated in the past he wanted to be a rockstar. Well, congratulations Lars, mission accomplished. He has reached such levels of notoriety that he feels he doesn't have to improve his skill set like other drummers. That's why people think he sucks compared to legends such as Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Charlie Benante (Anthrax), Danny Carrey (Tool), Igor Cavalera (ex-Sepultura), or Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater). These guys are drumming legends and don't require the name recognition of being in the biggest selling metal band to prop them up. The Napster thing is irrelevant and the people who bring that up were the ones using Napster to begin with.

Early Metallica music was influenced by classical music and classic literature. If you compare Metallica to other thrash bands of the day, you can tell that Metallica is a lot more melodic. "Call of Ktulu" came from an H.P Lovecraft book, and "Ride The Lightning" came from an episode of The Twilight Zone. "For Whom The Bell Toll" was a novel written by Ernest Hemingway. It's about an American man helping a rebel group in the 1930s Spanish Civil War. The main character falls in love with a woman in the middle of this very brutal conflict. Ernest Hemingway was actually in Spain during the Civil War and also experienced other wars. When I read this book, it was written in a way that very emotionally impactful. You learn what people think and how they feel about these very emotionally confusing circumstances. It's hard to explain. The Metallica song is about a scene in the book. Federal Troops attack a rebel group that was hiding in the woods. Five escape the initial attack but end up trapped on top of a hill. They refuse to surrender, knowing they would be tortured and executed so they fight to the bitter end hoping to inflict as much damage upon the enemy as they possibly can. The Federal Troops refuse to attack the hill so they call in bi-planes to bomb the hilltop. After the bombing, Federal Troops still refused to attack the hill so one of their Officers goes up the hill by himself, calling his men cowards. One of the Rebels is mortally wounded, but still alive. He uses every ounce of strength and willpower he has left to kill the Officer walking up the hill. If you ever wonder what a wounded soldier slowly dying on a battlefield thinks about, read this book.

Great Reaction Guys!😁 Ride the Lightning, And Justice for all are my top 2 favorite albums. Among the many Metallica has released. Can't wait to watch you guys get to. "Fade to Black" n "The Call of Ktulu", off this album. & "To Live is to Die" n "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" off the Justice album. When Metallica graced us with their presence back in 81' I was only 5 yrs old. Born in 76' I absolutely feel blessed to have grown up in the 80's & 90's. 🤘😉

If you are a fan of zombie movies at all- this song is the intro at the beginning of zombieland! My son was about 7 when I took him to the theater to see it. He starts screaming “mommy mommy that’s Metallica!” Proud mom moment. Master of puppets is the intro to zombieland 2!

I went to a metallica concert last June, it was awesome! Faultless! In the other hand, Lars is a founding member of the band, he cannot be replaced. (I think he was great during the best times of the band)

ive actually watched quite a few reactions to your metallica feedback and it brought me to listen a little deeper and respect you guys more. my brother does his own shit with some rap/rock shit that i wont shamelessly plug haha...but i, as the younger brother to a rapper, which im a rocker by heart...gotta say that i love to see the respect between the two genres. we get the 15 year olds that say "rock! rap sucks!" or opposite saying "rap and hiphop slays rock". it depends on the rock lol. you gotta respect both as a true music lover. I left my phone in a f$%#*ng uber lastnight and picking it up today....but ill drop this like while my "craptop" already had it open cuz i was jammin to it lol. much love yall.

If I remember right, didn't the WWE use this for one of the Undertaker matches at Mania (I think it might have been one of his matches with Triple H) Also, another person who has been "Lars'd" was Chris Benoit after the double murder-suicide. I admit it's strange looking back at some of his matches on DVD see how gifted he was in the ring, but there's that stigma of what he did. Also, the opening riff is perhaps one of the best bass riffs ever put down on any song ever.

For Whom The Bell Tolls was a novel by Ernest Hemmingway that took place during the Spanish Civil War and is what the song is about. It's one of several of Metallica's songs based off of books (One being based on Johnny Got His Gun being another). And, yes, Ride The Lightning is an old slang for dying in the electric chair.

To this day I wonder whether I'm hearing For whom the bell tolls, and AC/DC's Hells Bells at the beginning. I've gone slightly tone deaf listening to music too loud, but hey either song, worth it! Love what you guys are doing, keep it up! I feel like I'm in high school again with my friends trading cds we absolutely needed to hear. This is before the "sellout Black Album" Kinda how Van Halen fans felt with the 6th studio album 1984. Sounds a little more poppy and their 2nd singer Sammy carried that on mostly with his contributions. Less hard and more commerical friendly.

1. You're almost right. There are more tigers in captivity in Texas than IN THE WILD in the entire world. 2. The full quote is "Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee." 3. The decline of Metallica started with the Black album in 1991 (this track is around 1983, btw). Don't get me wrong - it was still a good album, but it wasn't a patch on the first 4 and the EP. 4. Can you hate on them? Put it this way: the Black album came out in '91, and Enter Sandman came with it, and is the reason I listen to all the music I've loved since. Load came out in '96, and I was so excited to hear the first new album in 5 years (S&M doesn't count). I bought it on cassette and slotted it in the car stereo. I managed to get through side A. Then I ejected the tape and chucked it out the window. I've hated them ever since (still love their old stuff). Apparently though, they're coming back to form with Death Magnetic. 5. Depeche Mode could not be further from Metallica. 6. Lars is, was and always will be a superlative drummer, but he's a fairly garbage human being, and he's a lazy bastard. That's why later Metallica kinda sucks. Lars writes a lot of the music, so he makes damn sure he doesn't have to do much.
