The sad thing about these lyrics is that it's not actually talking about Hell. All the terrible things that the song describes are found here in Earth, and Earth is indeed South of Heaven. That's really what Slayer and a lot of bands who use Satanic imagery do. They look at the evils of humanity and compare them to the evils of Hell and Satan. The emphasis is largely for both shock value and to provoke deep thinking and critique of humanity.

This is how I've described the relationship of "The BIG 4" - Metallica and Megadeth are those two brothers who are always trying to one up each other, then there's Anthrax who is the party guy and is always trying to keep the peace with the brothers. Slayer is that kid in the back of classroom carving his name in the desk. Maiden and Priest were like the cool college kids. Then Pantera was like that high school freshman who looked up to all the other guys, but still did his own thing.

AMEN brother....31 yrs of supporting Slayer through the good and bad. Seen them over sooo many times both here in the states and over seas, all time fav band fav band. Met them atleast a dozen times, best days of my life. When they hit Camden it was the last time and admittedly to not hear "Fuckin Slayer" anymore has left a hole in my heart.They had some misses but they never changed their sound or attitude. 1 of thee most influential bands

It's funny that Hollywood says "I could rap over this". Back in 1988, Public Enemy recorded the track "She Watch Channel Zero" on their "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" album. This song sampled the breakdown riff from Slayer's track "Angel of Death". Both bands were signed to Rick Rubin's Def Jam label at the time. You should check out both Slayer's "Angel of Death" and Public Enemy's "She Watch Channel Zero" if you haven't heard them already. I think you guys would love them both. Great reaction dudes!

Dave Lombardo on drums fellaz, he is a beast of a drummer, one of the cleanest blast beats and double bass drum rhythms you will have the pleasure to hear. Slayer were definitely part of a sonic soundscape that provided an epic backdrop to my teenage years.

The Slayer guys realized they could not go faster than they did in their album Reign in Blood so they went the opposite way with their following issue, South of Heaven, slowing things down and showing their Black Sabbath influence.

@@muttonmark i heard him say in an interview, when asked if they would play south of heaven in its entirety, that they never would because he hates some of the songs, but there are also some songs he loves. i saw slayer a lot, and they played mandatory suicide every time and south of heaven every time but once. i have also seen spill the blood once. would have loved to see ghosts of war, as that is prob my favorite song on this album, which i really enjoy.

Listening to this kind of music throughout my teen years: Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, and so on....Well, it became an identity, Our parents hated it. The long hair, jean jacket with the back patch, and tons of Metal Magazines pin-ups and 4 folds/8 folds posters! Nothing but good memories! It made whatever crap that was happening in your life MUCH easier to deal with. It was a CONTRUCTIVE outlet for our frustrations and aggressions! It was MY music and it's still GLORIOUS!!!

Here is something that may blow your mind. I myself was into metal from the beginning BLACK Sabith JP iron madin krogus then trash. I herd it all Satan worshiper called a rivet head. People were scared of us. Yet some organization did a survey of people who were hard core metal heads and it said those kids as adults were well rounded had a better crasp on life had better jobs got Marred staed married rasid happy well adjusted kids and all around doing better in life then the generation that proceed us. Just goes to show the PMRC and the religious goods that said we were going to hell and are generation wouldn't amount to much. They all had no idea what they were talking about. Just as we thought they were stupid clueless idiots try to make a buck talking out there asses.

I still remember this song opening their set on tour. The whole place was pitch black for what seemed like minutes. Then that opening riff starts, still black in the venue. Suddenly a green spot turns on over Kerry King's head and he keeps repeating the riff. Talk about an incredible build up to one of my favorite shows I ever went to.

Interesting that you mentioned "I can rap over this". Not surprising since Dave Lombardo and Tom Araya even went to the same high school as Sen Dog and Mellow Man Ace of Cypress Hill. The other members of Slayer grew up in similar areas like Long Beach and Downey. Rappers and metalheads in these areas often listened to the same music growing up.

I was at one of their first shows in the early 80s and I was at their last show on November 30th, 2019 at The Forum in Inglewood CA. The last Slayer album was Repentless, released in 2015

You more or less hit the nail on the head about what separates Slayer from the rest of the big four. Anthrax bring the NY style, rap, and party atmosphere with humour, Metallica are the stadium fillers that went mainstream and had very influential early music, Megadeth upped the technical skill and instrument playing ability and song structures, whereas Slayer aren't quite as precise but make up for it with creativity and raw, pummelling aggression. They are the one out of the four which most bridges the gap between thrash metal and death metal of the time.

Unfortunately for me, the only time I ever got to see Slayer live was the Farewell Tour. Nothing at all against Bostaph and Holt, it just isn't the same. I'm a bit of a purist, and without Lombardo and Hanneman, I feel I truly missed out. The show was awesome, but I know it could have been better. 🤘🏻

In ‘87 I made everyone I picked up for high school listen to Slayer. I was the only one of my friends that had wheels, very fast 68 Nova so it was kinda raising hell ride to school. Slayers version of hell was the psychotic shit the government and military of many countries did during war.

The title track off of my favorite Slayer album! It's amazing, front to back. It's funny that Hollywood said that he could rap over it, because when it came out, my friends and I were all like, "this whole album is full of slow rollin' car beats" (we loved in the 'hood). Then, Ice T, put out a track talking about how he rolls to Slayer. Everyone recognizes it. This came out in 1988 and was the second album they did that was produced by Rick Rubin, during the same period that he was producing both Run DMC, and the Beastie Boys (all released by Def Jam). There was a lot of cross-pollination between the sessions for all three acts. Rubin produced the drums to have a more poppin' boom and thump, knowing that the slow-burn beats would bring crossover appeal. It's fucking genius. As to that special something Slayer brings, it's raw, confrontational brutality. There's no novelty songs about aliens, no sing-a-long slogans about the Satan's number, and no attempts at Top 40 appeal. I love a lot of Anthrax and some Megadeth, but Slayer has something none of the other Big Four have: Bold, steady seriousness, while still melting faces with fun music. P.S. South of Heaven might be my favorite full album by Slayer, but the title track on their follow-up -- Seasons in the Abyss -- is my favorite song of theirs. It's a full on epic with a mesmerizing opening riff that I love to play on guitar. It just feels uneasy and menacing in the perfect a way a song about Crowlian occult mysticism should.

Slayers BEST ever drum production for me, on this album. Amazing compression. Also they, and Megadeth and Anthrax nd Pantera all occasionally slip into half time feels to give that groove , which almost creates a 'metal hip hop' groove...

If you want to check out any of the original thrash bands that are still kicking it today, Testament has been laying everyone else to shame. They have been the most consistent thrash band, and probably the most technically proficient. They are effectively a supergroup with the lineup that they have.

Saw Slayer twice the first was The Big 4 concert at Yankee Stadium. Then saw them in the Theatre at MSG downstairs from the arena and being I work in MSG I got cheap seats then security gave me the wristband to get down by the stage. Then I worked one of the shows upstairs in the arena with them, Primus, Phillip H Anselmo and the Illegals doing a A vulgar display of Pantera set since Phil was Pantera’s vocalist.

Through all the years I "liked" Slayer, it was really their instrumental music and riffs that I liked, then I heard South of Heaven, and it was their first song I liked top to bottom. It is on par with the best output of the rest of the thrash bands out there. Got a bit of the Savatage or Helloween feel.

Everyone always talks about Reign in Blood which is fantastic influence of thrash but those above albums are amazing listens for their overall true musicianship. Highly recommend checking them both out in entirety

Slayer just has that evil vibe that none of those other bands have. At least, not at the same level. By the way, check out the metal documentary Murder in the Front Row on Prime Video. It focuses mainly on San Francisco's Bay area thrash scene back when all those Big Four guys were just kids. Best metal doc ever.

I lucked out and got to see them twice. Once on their final tour in St Augustine and once on their final final tour in Orlando. Both were fucking amazing!!! Also, lamb of god was touring with em both times....I mean. Yeah,nuff said

Gotta check out Woods of Ypres- Buried in Mount Cemetery. So much emotion, f**king piano solo, and not tooo many people know of the band. Also gotta check out My Sleeping Karma. It’s all instrumental and it’s an eargasm. Men of culture such as yourselves would dig it
