The backstory behind this song is brilliant; basically a huge FU to the industry. Their label kinda demanded them to write a heavier song than usual, so they gave them this. The mellow middle section is just to give Danny a rest. And they used the song to tell their bosses to fuck off :D

It's probably also important to note that Tool had been in an extensive legal battle with their record label prior to the release of this album, which forced the band to go on hiatus, and is what caused the long delay between Aenima and Lateralus. That probably the bigger reason why Tool wrote this song.

I was told that this song was about them getting back at the Record label. because the Record label wanted tool to be more Metal. This was around when slipknot and that Type of Style of Metal was starting to get big. So tool does want tool does. I could be wrong but that is what I was told when I went to see them one time.

That is the generally accepted story on this one. Tool and the label were not getting along at this point which partially resulted in the delay between Lateralus and 10,000 Days but I don't have an authoritative reference

The record industry doesn't have any idea of how great this band really is. They just care about the three minute radio song when not one kid I know listens to the radio anymore. My boys listen to Tool. I listen to Tool and we don't care if the song is two minutes or fifteen minutes. It's a Tool song. This is what we want, and this is what we are getting from Maynard and company.

They had to give Danny that little break in the middle because of how hard he goes into the drums in this song. That and they wanted to make there be a several minute segment of near-silence to make sure this song couldn't make it on the radio. Turns out the record label told Tool they had to make a song for radio and Tool didn't like that too much. Even with the motive behind the song they still made it into an incredible song worthy of being on Lateralus. The whole album is amazing start to finish. I think you guys should give Puscifer - 'The Remedy' a listen. It's Maynard's third band, and it's a great song. Might show you guys yet another side to Maynard.

Now you're in for it! This one is intense. Notice the sound of the saw when the quieter part begins, it is an echo of the first song which connects them in my mind. Like it's saying, "Don't forget to forgive"!

By far my favorite of all TOOL songs. I relate this song to past relationships. I even sent this song to my last gf who wanted to stay “friends”. I told her she had to listen to it all the way to the end. It expressed exactly how I felt... she did and that was it. So much happier now. Thanks TOOL the best band of my lifetime! Thanks guys. @@Hollywood6IX the label asked for a "harder song" so that they could market it more easily to the Slipknot/Staind/etc crowd. The song definitely doesn't have that LATERALUS vibe like the other songs on the album. TOOL in their awesome humorous way gives them the intense headbanger that the label ask for but they put in a two minute mellow melodic section right in the middle. Their's no way a radio station would ever play it.

Between Ænima in 1996 and Lateralus in 2001, TOOL was stuck in a lengthy court battle (and I mean for YEARS) with their then record label about their record contract, which led them to release “Salival” before Lateralus... which wasn’t a regular Tool album, but a compilation of a few B-sides, a few live tracks, and a couple of cover tracks... basically it was an album of their old junk recordings they put together, slapped alongside a collection of all of their music videos in order to reach their number of releases for that deal to get out of their ties to that record label... luckily for us TOOL fans, TOOL can do no wrong, and even this “throw away” compilation came out to be a fucking A+, amazing collection of songs that is fans wouldn’t have been able to hear otherwise, and is now a classic TOOL release that stands up next to their actually full-length LPs of new material. But yeah, this song is them releasing all that anger and frustration against that whole awe full process of having to deal with fighting against their record label in court that took up YEARS of their precious time... this was when Tool was at their closest to actually breaking up and parting ways, JUST because of how oppressive and detrimental this process was to the band in general. The record label and their army of lawyers are the blood-sucking ticks and leeches trying to suck them dry. Luckily they made it through, and we got the best TOOL era ever out of the aftermath... can’t WAIT to se you guys react to some SALIVAL material (but make sure you listen to the normal studio versions of the 3 live tracks on salival (third eye, part of me, and pushit)...

Fun fact: Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Danny got a Metal Drummer of the Year award from, i forget what magazine, the year this came out. Also, i feel you on your love for Lateralus. I've been Tool Army since right before AEnima was released, so i was super excited for the new album. The night this dropped i bought the CD, and 5 hits of acid, and made my way to the beach. Once the sun was completely gone i ate my sweet tarts, and once i could definitely feel them i opened up the disc, put on my DJ headphones, and laid back on the sand and let it wash over me. It was such an amazing experience. This was before we had heard anything about the Fibonacci sequence being encoded into the track listing, but even on a first listen it was super dope!!!!

I like how the song is called Ticks and Leaches but on the thumbnail you put a spider an a mosquito. Granted ticks are in the arachnid family but not necessarily a spider. Anyway I love it.

I saw the Lateralus Tour in Boulder Colorado USA and they were Absolutely magnificent, 🎼🎼🎼🎼Drummer stole the show, but the Entire concert was Phenominal.
