1955, and this lift is a retrofit, you can see the old outlines of bricked up arches there, which says the original lift was either hydraulic or steam powered, or it was old enough to be horse powered instead, using a winch and pulleys to do lifting of a platform. Wonder just how many bolts and nuts have sat there untouched in nearly 70 years, and how many of the electrical connections have never been touched, though the selenium rectifiers definitely have let magic smoke out a while ago to get a silicon replacement bodged in there.Could have spent 10 minutes more and made it look nice.

Yes, I did notice this also. Looks like there is a lot of history to this building.

My uncle worked for J&E Hall, in the factory in Dartford. He was a superb engineer and the company produced some great products. I remember their escalators here in Newcastle upon Tyne. Fantastic video as ever.

Great made me remember 50 year old work. I had worked on these lifts .How strong was all parts . Now a days every thing is like paper.

Scary part is testing those over travel switches, as if you test them with them connected correctly you will need new mains fuses for the lift. But a very nice lift, waiting for part 2, I did make a simple 3 floor model as apprenticeship test, because I wanted something a little more complex than a blinking light with a 555 driven off the power supply we made from near scratch. Only parts bought were the core and copper wire, and the electronic components. I added in extra parts to make it more useful, a battery charger, and better current limiting as well.

Another fantastic video with superb editing and explanation. I will subscribe to the United Lift Channel. Keep up the great video's. The Selenium rectifier had expired, and a pretty rough floating set up 35 Amp bridge rectifier is just dangling loose.

When I was a kid, well, teenager, we used to have a shop. It was at the New Covent Garden market (the one in Vauxhall, not the touriest attraction near the Strand). As the shop was on the 1st floor, we had our own freight lift. Nothing particularly special, just an old Otis with the concertina door and a safety gate inside. It made some amazing noises though, and because my mum and dad thought they were not supposed to replace the builbs (either that or they thought the lights used a non standard fitting), the lights did not work, It was quite slow, and the ground floor of the building was at least 30 ft, so it took a while to travel between floors. It was quite atmospheric. Unfortunately, we eventually did have to replace the bulbs.

Is that an old fire system heat detector to the right of the bell @ 04:18 ? wonder If its still in use !
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 2 месяца назад
Probably still connected to the lift bell......
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 2 месяца назад
That's not a heat detector, it's a switch attached to the emergency car brakes. If the car brakes were to apply the switch shuts the lift down.

4:41 : does somebody know what is this square wave / resistor symbol means on the schematic ? (as seen across BK / TDL / TA). Usually this symbol is for heating elements. 4:55 : what is that component, a resistor ? a capacitor ? whatever it is, it's a big one :D
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 2 месяца назад
4:55 I believe that's the choke, but I'm not 100% sure. Chokes are normally mounted alongside the cabinet, as they are quite large. 4:41 These are resistors. The ones across TA and TDL prevent the capacitor being connected directly to the supply, so they charge up under a resistor, and also prevent them discharging instantly, hence a timer is produced. The one directly across BK I believe is to absorb the spike that will feed-back from the brake when it's depowered.

You see the "Chokes" if that is what they are called here 8:26.
