In South Africa Ford and Mazda were the same for a long time, literally just a different badge. The Ford version of this Ranger was called a Courier and the Mazda version was a B-series, both were available with a 1.6 / 2.2 and 2.6 4 cylinder petrol and a 3.0 and 3.4 V6. Diesels were 2.5 WL 12v engines, turbo and non turbo options and a 2.2 N/A if memory serves.

finally learning diesel after 25 years working on gas and bikes, One of my customers just bought a Sellick forklift with s Perkins 4.2L. Came from the auction with slow crank and no start, no documentation. Aside from the customers Excursion with the 7.3, Ive had no experience with diesel. So it was a crash course in these. Just did a little research on this Diesel, rare is an understatement apparently. Only ran the 2.2L Perkins for '83-'84 model years, then swapped over to a turbocharged Mitsubishi 2.3L Diesel with quite a bit more power for '85-'86, Bronco II's went on through '87. Finding either variant online through recycled engine dealers is like looking for a needle in a haystack with all the available gasser 4 bangers around. Best put some reliability mods and power adders on these Diesels if you're wanting to do any hauling or towing with them, if something breaks, you're gonna be shit outta luck for any replacement parts, most likely sticking with used or rebuilt in order to get running again.

I've seen 1 diesel ranger and it was in a pick a part yard, probably because nobody could figure out how to lookup parts for it LOL. My 84 Ranger had dual tanks, I wish I still had that truck, knowing now how to fix the stalling issues (TFI Module) and doing a duraspark conversion corrects a lot of issues those carbureted 2.8L V6 engines had. It was a great truck till it started warming up then stalling and couldn't get it started again for an hour or so after it would stall LOL. Sold it for $700, the paint, body, and interior was still in great condition except the normal plastic dash trim cracks that I swear every Ranger and Bronco 2 has LOL.

I had an '85 with the 2.3 turbo diesel Mitsu engine in it. That was a great truck, and had really nice power. That engine had problems with cracking cylinder head though.

LOVE your 300D. I miss mine terribly. Your videos are very relaxing... funny thing that I'd want to do after doing a power steering flush and various other tweaks to my DD (2010 Scion tC) today and got her running better than she had in years.... is watch someone else fix a problem that isn't mine!

Dang that thing is cool. I must really take living in the hi desert for granted because I have 70s trucks that just have the slightest surface rust. I have never seen a pan rust through before

My uncle has a shop and while I was getting my snow tires taken off lately I saw that he had an 83 Ranger with the 2.8 V6 sitting in the yard. Had 29k miles and not a dent and no more than surface rust anywhere. I asked my uncle about it since I'm looking to buy my first pickup to haul my snowmobile around in over the winter. He says he just sold it, for A HUNDRED BUCKS (USD). My jaw dropped. I'm still pissed and it's been a few days since then.

My uncle has a like 89' B2200 with a 2.2 Perkins swapped out of an older truck and Its pretty cool. Little 5 speed, its ok in town. Downside to the 59 horse is that it doesn't exactly like full on highway speeds very much. I don't know if its a gearing thing of what but all fifth gear does is help with MPG, and depending on the road the truck will start slowing down in fifth.

My Dad bought one new in 1983. Drove the truck for many years till his passing. My brother drove it up to around 2010. Your right not a lot of power but it was always dependable. Starters are a weak point on these trucks. His had 4 speed from factory. We always talked about trying to put a 5 speed in it but wasn't sure if it had enough power to pull a taller gear.
@skylinefever
@skylinefever 6 лет назад
In some vehicles, a starter from a larger engine would have the same pattern as the original engine, and that sometimes solved the problem. However if the problem was caused by cramming too much stuff under a tiny hood, there isn't much you can do to solve the starter problem. For that reason, my mom's 1985 Nissan Maxima need starters replaced very often.

Must say man I bought a 93 chevy type 3 ambulance with 109000 on it and then I saw your video on the 6.5. Very great video and with around 800 bucks I got the weak points covered. Its definitely no speed demon as I'm using it for a service truck. The price was right. No matter what engine it is they have one thing in common. They all break. The 6.4 is straight junk tho for sure

Those are gold, second only to a diesel Excursion. It'll be the only thing still running after the zombie apocalypse.. But I have two square body Rangers, and my 87 4x4 excab is one of the most comfortable and best handling little trucks ever. If it were a diesel I think I'd drive it everyday..

Usually engines that make no power run for ever . Hence the original 12v cummins last million miles. Same reason ford offers double the warranty if you take half the power from their diesel chassis cab diesels.

I think at 59 HP, that truck has my 95 Ranger 2.3 beat by at least 10 HP! (Pretty sure something is wrong with it) - I can barely get it up to 60 on flat ground. Runs smooth, doesn't burn or leak anything @ 225k miles.

My Father-in-law had one of these. Along with a Diesel Chevy Luv. Both were low on power. But being 4x4 pulled ok in low lock. Wish I had bought both of them. He hauled the ford off for junk. The Luv is still running local. Frame rusted into on it. Neighbor welded plates over it. Still going truck has over 250,000 miles on it now.

I remember when the Ford Ranger compact truck first premiered. At the time, I didn't find it attractive, at least not next to the Toyota compact pickup at the time. I also know that they were available with 2.2 litre to 2.4 litre diesel engines. I consider it damn unforgivable that neither engine remained on the market for very long. I'm guessing between 1980 and 1985. It's a shame that they never remained on the market after that. Is diesel for everyone? Would everyone have bought a diesel-powered compact truck? Maybe, maybe not. But I believe that had people been given a choice, I'm sure there are those who would've bought it. Emissions, be damned. And had there been enough service centres across the USA that specialized in small displacement diesel engines, small displacement diesels would've still continued to this day. Who knows?

82 through 84 some Mazda B2200 had the exact same drivetrain. I have one but mine only gets 30 miles to the gallon and it runs perfect. I don't believe they ever got 45 miles to the gallon and yes they do not have any power, they will go 75 miles an hour but it takes a long time to get up to that speed

That trans is likely the Type M smoothcase, which is a common unit on the non-turbo RX-7s, Miata and many others. Nothing spectacular, but it can hold the power/torque of that 1/2 lung N/A diesel.

I had a 1983 special edition diesel. Had a Winchester or Remington label on the front fenders. Came off a naval base in Norfolk, VA. Would not do over 65 MPH. I wonder now if it had a governor on it. Got a bed load of wet mulch and could not tell it had anything in it. Great torque. Wish I had kept it.

I truly feel your pain. 1986 F-150 that I even had nose art made for it. The ship was named Gremlins Mother F---er. I had to do everything on it. The manual gearbox left me on the side of the road 4 times, and I was put on the roadside numerous other times for other issues.
