I’ve hiked the Canadian Rockies for decades... my 3 ground rules: 1) don’t hike with dogs who’ll make any bear aggressive 2) hike with a group of 4, even if it’s not mandatory 3) carry 2 cans of bear spray. Incredibly sad for this couple, dog and grizzly

there is a story surfacing that native hunters shot and killed a 700lbs elk on the trail in the park and left the gut pile close to where the trail users transit. Increased bear activity was reported during the previous days leading up to the attack in that area. Seems like a no brainer. Gut piles and kills are the most dangerous situation when bears are defending it. Hunting in parks should be banned.

Dumb laws, guns should be allowed as a last resort self defense while in the wilderness, regardless of if its a national park. Most of the time 1 shot in the air is all you need; but if not a landed 2nd shot will deter it some more, and if that fails then you continue shooting until it runs or dies. Compared to a bear banger (where you only get the effect of the first shot, and have nothing afterwards), and bear spray (you have to be within spitting distance to deter the attack, and thats if it even works, some bears can be determined), you can use a gun non lethally to deter predators. Its 2023, we have the tech, and this is how its suppose to be used, yet we dont use it. "Laws that dont meet reality will be broken".

Sigh, anytime I hear this comment I just know it is someone with irrational fears who are more likely to shoot a fellow hiker or themselves. 4.5 million visitors to Banff a year and 1 bear attack. Do you carry a firearm in your car at all times because the odds are way greater of being murdered than getting attacked by a bear. Do you wait for lightning to stop before going from your car back into your house, because you're 4 times more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a bear in Banff. There are plenty of studies that prove bear spray is the most effective. It makes me laugh that people think that just because you have a gun, you're safe....there are videos on youtube with proffesionals that test bear attack reaction times with guns and spray....I've been in the military for 15 years and I wouldn't walk infront of 50% off them with loaded firearms let alone feel confident they could actually accurately shoot a charging bear. Lol no....if that's how you feel you either have a irrational fear of bears or live in a bubble. Banff has 4.5 million visitors each year, how many people get attacked by a bear each year? You're going to make all your safety decisions based off a 2 in 4.5 million odds? Odds of getting struck by lighting are less than 1 million....You're waaaaay more likely to get murdered in Canada than attacked by a bear.....do you carry a shotgun in your car at all times? It's irrational. Coming from a guy who's job is getting dropped off by helicopter in remote areas of northern Manitoba, walking 15-20K per day alone.....Heck, we used to have "trained" people carry shotguns and half the time they didn't bother loading them or they'd accidentally point them at people. We even had a "trained" person who took a bear guard course (yes, a real thing) and when he saw a polar bear he literally threw the gun and ran away...I've come across many bears, caribou, moose, wolverines, wolves....very few negative interactions. I'll take my chances with some bear spray.

People saying it's best to use a gun probably don't understand that you'd need to make several very accurate, perfect shots under extreme stress and adrenaline to stop a bear. Very unlikely the average person could pull that off, you'd be more likely to enrage it further. Bear spray isn't perfect, but you don't need to hit the bear with it, you just need to aim in its general direction, as the spray forms a cloud which irritates the bear's senses (eyes, nose). And, as the video says, it's best to hike in larger groups (4+) in bear country. Their eyesight is bad, so if your group bunches together, the bear will think it's a massive beast, and probably bail. RIP to this couple and dog. And shame a bear had to be put down as well.
@cephalotus1013
@cephalotus1013 10 месяцев назад
