Jokes aside, Lego is eminently collectible because of how hard it is for them to retool their production for set-specific pieces, so many times it's just one production run and done . Not to mention that shields especially were in a lot of very old sets when purchasing and keeping sets unopened wasn't really a thing, and they are some of the easiest pieces for kids to lose. But also just imagine how much pu$$y that collection would get you.

Some of the magic cards I've lost, traded away, or had stolen are now worth thousands. I started playing in 1996 when I was 6 years old, I cringe at the memory of owning power 9 (the most valuable cards in the game, black lotus is one of them) and touching them with sticky juice fingers and lending them to friends for their commom cards cause they have a cool picture of a knight on them. You're right though, you move on.

Additionally it was involved in 2 runs of the complete set boxes printed. Its also rumored that 500 count boxes were being shopped around at trade shows, purely to bank on the fact that the general public believed this highly coveted card would be rare and increase in value over the years. It is very likely that the 1989 Upper Deck KG Jr Rookie card was the most printed card by Upper Deck that year.
