The FDNY guys seem exceptionally chill to have some RU-vidrs video them at fairly close range. I expect it's an earned respect thing...they stay out of the way, let the firefighters do their jobs, and in return the FDNY is okay with those who have proven that they can be trusted on those scenes. Wouldn't surprise me if some of these channels are run by ex-FDNY or relatives of FDNY because they treat the firefighters with tremendous respect on scenes.

We had a transformer ‘issue’ in a basement here in Tasmania a few years back. It was jury-rigged back into service but kept causing power spikes. About 10 day later it caused the ancient wiring in one of our oldest department stores to burn it down. Was quite ‘impressive’ with flames higher than nearby buildings 12 stories higher. A guy who owned a Sony shop opposite made an excellent film with their latest and greatest camera.

I work at a big power plant and our sister plant had a transformer fire, it melted the 6inch steel cables 150 feet above it. Our fire brigades are made of 4 members. It was put out quickly but it was only the 150 gallon spill over oil reservoir not the 20000 gallon main oil tank. Seeing 500 gallons of diesel on fire is a scary thing, I couldn't imagine 20000 gallons of something more flammable.

What is the purpose of a rebreather for a firefighter? I understand why the military uses a closed circuit. No gasses to expel (no bubbles) means no hand grenades get thrown into the water when those bubbles reach the surface and are visible to the enemy. Photographers also have a legitimate claim on the technology because bubbles aren’t desirable in a lot of underwater photography (the bubbles might scare fish and obscure the subject of photograph. I was a vol FF in PA for 8 years, never heard of a “rebreather ops” What is it?
@windycurrent
@windycurrent Год назад
I use Draeger rebreathers for tunnel rescue and have been a tunnel rescue specialist for about 14 years now. Rebreathers are a special breathing system where you exhaled air is scrubbed using soda Lyme. There is a small oxygen cylinder inside the pack as well (not an air bottle) and cooling ice to keep your breathing air from getting hot and burning you. Every so many breaths the system squirts oxygen into the system so your body receives the appropriate level of oxygen. On average with moderate work exertion you get 1 hour and 20 minutes to one hour fourth five minutes of breathing time before you need to be out of the danger area. Hope this helps you understand.

Yup. In my country (Australia) you don’t go on the scene without full PPE. Ever. I often watch videos of these Seppos wandering around their fire grounds like Brown’s cows. No wonder so many of them get sick and injured.

@@bostonrailfan2427 As a paramedic I never understood this. Mind you I don't live or work in NY. I get along well with our firefighters but still some hate coming to medical calls. Like isn't the profession to save lives? Who keeps that person alive after fire pulls them out? The medics, nurses, and doctors. And who is screaming on the radio for EMS to expedite when a patient is crashing? Fire and police. That is why its a team effort. There are more important thing than putting wet stuff on hot stuff. Some firefighters hate medics until something happens to them and they need those medics.

@mar_man813
@mar_man813 Год назад
Exactly what it sounds like. Just like cave divers -- can stay on mask for a LONG time.
@dcentral
@dcentral Год назад
Rebreather masks reuse the carbon dioxide from exhaled air which then recycles it giving fire fighters extended oxygen supply than a standard breathing apparatus. Rebreather masks are used in toxic environments, tunnels and confined spaces where you need longer oxygen supply.

@bostonrailfan2427
@bostonrailfan2427 Год назад
just as they sound: air supplies that allow you to rebreathe the expelled air and scrubs the CO2 from it allowing for extended use in locations. they’re rarely used by UK brigades but are held and ready for incidents especially in cave/coal mining areas and hazmat areas plus ports

The crystals are called "soda lime" and that's what removes CO² from the circuit, fresh O² is then added from the bottle seen at the bottom. That's not to be confused with the ice packs (seen at 18:20) used to cool the air that's heated by the chemical reaction with soda lime.

So i look up what a rebreather is. Basically it is a carbon dioxide to oxygen converter
@andrewallason4530
@andrewallason4530 Год назад
Well, no. It uses a carbon dioxide absorbing material to ‘scrub’ the CO2, leaving the oxygen depleted air ( you exhale about 16% oxygen). The oxygen tank then makes that back up to 21% to match air. Regular Breathing Apparatus just store air.
