Today (28th Sept 2023) the Raspberry Pi Foundation announced the launch of the new Raspberry Pi 5. This will hit the stores in October, but the full specifications have been released.
Let's see what you'll be getting.

Thanks for sharing. Your cost concerns are valid.

Thanks. I guess it depends on what you're looking for. There will be some projects where this will be ideal.

There are soldering points for the video signal, but not for the analog audio signal.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the audio is brought out anywhere else?

I mean it's still interesting at 60 coming in around 100 after accessories, does the newer 5 have the ability to use PoE now? I saw they had PoE hats for the 4, but I noticed a PoE jumper on the 5? could be a neat feature and PCIe is also pretty interesting. I think if they updated the 400 to a '500' (of course you need active cooling so perhaps the keyboard would change a bit) with the pi5 and you could use PoE that would be pretty cool. I don't think I need a base pi 5 because I have 4's but if the 400 price dipped or they announced a newer 500 I'd be interested.

Don't get me wrong. I think the new board is a great step up for the Raspberry Pi and the addition of a number of higher end features such as the PCIe, PoE, etc. are creating a really powerful computer in the Pi form factor. At even £80 it's still great value. It's just to me it seems a bit of overkill for a lot of the projects that I see myself doing, including some of the retro gaming ones. As you say a 500 version would be interesting as an all in one PC unit.

Good video and pleased to see you got one to evaluate. I was expecting a Pi Day 2024 release so this a bit earlier than I was expecting - overall I think it's priced reasonably for the advancements ih hardware on it, especially with the I/O chip that clearly improves performance there. Yes, I will probably pick up a couple when the initial rush has died down though I haven't been sat here "biting my nails" in eager anticipation of the Pi 5. To be honest, I would love to see more done with the Pi Zero format - the quad core Zero 2W is an amazing piece of tiny hardware, except for that 512MB RAM limitation. Increasing RAM on that to 1GB or 2GB would definitely be something that would enthuse me a lot more, though I accept there may be architectural limitations in doing that.

Thanks, but not so lucky to actually get one sent out - I guess the channel isn't that big yet! I'm with you on the Pi zero format. With that amount of computing power in such a small package and at the current price it opens up a whole range of useful projects.

Unfortunately I don't get preview units so don't actually have a Pi5 to test :(

A quick check says that $35 in 2012 is worth about $46.80 today and given the huge increase in power I don't think that $60 (for the 4GB version) is a bad price at all. You always needed a case and a power supply so again fair play. I have placed my order. Given the performance is similar to the Orange Pi 5 I think it is still good value. The modern SBC is way ahead of what we got in 2012.

I take your point. It's always a personal choice on these things. The extra power is worth the extra money. I'm just not sure that I need the extra power at the moment.

@@BytesNBits I agree with you. I know you (like me) don't just stick to the Pi for solutions, you also look at old and used PC hardware also. I will certainly pick up a Pi 5 or two eventually, but I don't need one at the moment and I've not been sat here "biting my nails" waiting for it to appear. I am pleased to see you got one to evaluate, the hard work you put into this channel is worthy of that.

A very interesting board. I've put my name on a waiting list, ($0) however they didn't quote a price - waiting on that bit for my side of the planet. I've been playing with a Pi400, to see how it goes as a desktop replacement, unfortunately, running my favourite distro, Ubuntu, not that well. So it will be interesting to see how this one works in the space. Probably the first thing I'll want is the PCIe for an M.2 etc, so that kind of makes the official case a little useless. So hopefully the price will be Ok and I can proceed with the transaction. (Now to unload the '400)

I find you need the lighter versions of Linux to get these usable as desktop PCs. Even then just for light office style work.

What are the chances of the company being able to stock these units? Given their track record, we probably won't be able to purchase them for another 2 years.
@BytesNBits
@BytesNBits 9 месяцев назад
I think the Pi Foundation is back up to full production speed, if not even more capacity, so hopefully they will be clearing any backlogs and keeping stock levels at a reasonable level.

@@BytesNBits I still cannot go down to Microcenter to buy Raspberry Pis. I even went to buy Picos and they allowed me to buy only one. Seems like the company is still vastly under producing. Even their advertised retailer are constantly out of stock. No other company is struggling with stock so it makes me wonder if Raspberry Pi is going bankrupt.
@terrydaktyllus1320

I don't think they would have launched it without having some understanding of supply and demand. I suspect FOMO fanboyism will probably mean a few weeks of supply issues but whilst I will definitely pick up one or two in a few months, I don't need one right this instant because there are plenty of other SBCs and used PCs out there that can solve my computing problems.
@KDG860

@@terrydaktyllus1320 I went down to my local Microcenter last week and they still don't carry any stock of Raspberry Pi 4, 3, or Zeros. I was able to purchase the Pico, but i was only allowed to get one. Look online at their partner resellers and they are all out of stock most of the time. I don't see how they will ever make the 5 work at all since they cannot get their other product lines under control. Honestly, makes be believe the company is going bankrupt. Like, why the sudden surprise? Seems rushed, yet under performs their competitors.

Raspberry has been overpriced for a while now, I hope that they will try to decrease it with this gen.

I guess it's going the same way as all the rest - bigger, better, more expensive. Loosing sight a bit of its real reason for existence. At least they are keeping the older model on sale at the more affordable cost.

I guess there's always a push to make this a desktop worthy PC. Not sure if that's staying true to what the Raspberry Pi is about.

That's a bit like saying that a family saloon car is garbage because you chose to take it off-roading for the day and knackered the suspension on it at the end of it. An engineer uses the right tool for the right job, and a bad workman always blames his tools. It's delusional to go through life believing one single (and very cheap) computing platform will do every single job you throw at it 100% well.

Garbage? In what way? I'd love to hear your reasoning behind your logic, but I highly doubt that you'll answer.
