It's so hard to believe that this game was from 1987. Truly cutting-edge. There was a time when Taito were unstoppable! The music never seems to get old. I love Taito and Zuntata! This game really deserved a Genesis Megadrive port, which it never got. Would have been the best home conversion outside of Taito Legends. As a kid, I used to find this game challenging, but pretty much owned it in my later years.
Sega Genesis did come out with Rastan Saga 2 from Taito but it wasn't very good.. Agree I would have loved a Genesis port of the original. Nowadays I play the original port of Rastan on my Taito Legends game for PS2.
This game takes me back to arcades when I was younger! I don't think I saw anyone make it past the first stage. Most of the time, they never made it to the boss. A tough game!
Thank you very much. I spent a whole summer to get it. It was a very tiring task to the point that I have never done anything like it again (and I don't have any desire to do it).
In just over 15 minutes Rastan killed two evil wizards, an Amazon, an evil knight, a hydra, and a dragon, not to mention countless minions. What did you do today?
Awesome. I played this game a lot at Round Table Pizza when I was 8 or 9 and found it so frustrating that I was so pumped when I finally made it to stage 2. Never made it past that though. Always thought the graphics seemed bad ass for the time.
Great job and amazing skill! This is one of the most difficult games I've played due to it's limited number of continues. Best arcade soundtrack ever imo. I just beat this game for the first time, but it took me closer to 4 hours LOL
Wow, amazing playthrough of my favorite arcade game of it's time! I remember only ever getting to maybe level six, so it was great fun to actually see the ending! Much thanks!
Haven't beaten this game with one credit. Legend run. Made it look easy, as someone who's played this a lot. I know this was very very difficult. I've only gotten to level three without dying.
Well done!! I've beat this game before but only after the fact I might add a few times, that dieing on the last level sends you back regardless! I have since learned this is not the only game to employ that tactic. If I was low on lives I'd get a continue screen on purpose with the level 5 boss to increase my chances, and thus it was beaten!! Good stuff man! Well done.
+Star Child I hear you. These games made the pizza joints the place to be. So many great side scrollers back then. Rastan and Shinobi had running back like a fiend lol.
Yes I remember the great arcade era. How fortunate were we. I was one of those noobs, lol. Trash talk never got to me. The endless row of quarters lined up on the cabinet usually got me. Waiting like 20 mins to play Street Fighter 2 just to get schooled in in a 30 second match lol. I remember being all confident because I was the champ in my hood, not so much in the main arcades lol. I still play NBA JAM, Street fighter, or any games with the 90's appeal online. Hit me up if ya interested in getting some vintage gaming whether it's versus or coop.
As some one who has completed a no deaths run of this game, I admire this speedrun. Even though, my brother describes it as a "no fucks given" run. I wonder how many times you had to start over because the fickle RNG of this game caused one of the full health items not to drop.
Thanks for your comment. I realy appreciate it coming from someone who has completed the game with no deaths. This video doesn't reflect the truly difficulty of this gameplay. It was hard as hell. No other gameplay that i made can match this one... by far. I believe I spent around 2000 hours before getting the run. And, when I finished, I was so exhausted that I didn't wanted to play any other hard game in a long, long time. About the missing full health, you must be refering the one in the phase 5. A lion should drop it but for some reason he doesn't do it. Luckily I managed to not die. By the way, I did some fun facts about Rastan in the spanish version (another video with the same run but in spanish). Anyway, one of them, the rarest of them all, concerns the final boss. In this run he has three times more life than it should. A very rare bug.
well, if you think how games are programed, maybe could not a bug at all, maybe randomness was not so common those days, but I remember people used to say this and other games like operation wolf got harder over the day when poeple played them a lot, so usualy they asked the arcade owner to reset the machines
Back then I should be part of that crowd. I loved this arcade but was to difficult for me and my coins didn't last too much so instead of play it for myself I just watched others gameplays.
Muchas gracias. Sobre el número de marras no me quiero enrollar pero para hacer la partida tuve que hacer un cierto pacto, con una cierta entidad, a cambio de ciertas cosas... en fin, te puedes imaginar el resto XD.
Perfect 80s ancient trog caveman aesthetics! Conan the Barbarian, Beast Master, and the Ultimate Warrior all reflect this archetype. My brother used to play Rastan so I just watched and it took me an afternoon to find out the name of that video game. Wild!!
I wonder if the devs ever intended the game to be played this way? Just barrel straight ahead, never hunt for powerups, hey, skip them if you find them and don't worry about a high score. We've been playing arcade games wrong for as long as they've been a thing.
Nice. When i was young me and my friend spent alot of free time in the summer only playing this game just to get to a point to beat it without dying so I can only imagine how many hours went into this..
Jumping up the ropes you can actually kill the bats by jumping your sword into them upward. Oh, and I never knew! you could jump on the pipe holes in the castle!!!
Remeber playing this game in the Knott's Berry farm arcade in the mid/late eighties. Later got it for the Sega Master System... Was a pretty good conversion on a home system for the day!
BEAST! I played at release in my youth and never reached the third stage! This game is very difficult (you got to be very acurate and fast) and beautiful too for the epoch (with lot of nice concepts of playing for realism)! A D&D masterpiece like Cadash. For more 3d games in that action spirit, prefer Severance blade of Darkness, to Morowind series (which is more role playing game).
I'ma cry foul! Not on you @mukankakuna, but on the arcade version of the game I put my life savings into back in the day. The fire sword NEVER lasted that long, hits to Rastan would take far more off per strike, and those damned bats in the castle would come at me balls-out when the music got all tense.
That would mean that you were playing on a higher difficulty setting in your arcade than what is being played here. Remember, they were out to get your life savings back in the day.
My favourite game back in the day. I can complete it without dying too. Bosses are easy if you have the axe and the speed ring. Never stop moving on the levels, time the jumps and you'll be fine! Just practice.
Gracias. Si quieres ver curiosidades sobre el juego mírate el vídeo que tengo comentado. Tras la partida repaso algunas curiosidades con las que me topé.
Not that I'm taking anything away from you as my channel it'self has tons of longplays with cheats used as It's all about showing as much of the game as possible rather than personal performance,....but I have this actual pcb arcade board in my arcade machine and i know for a fact without the armour those Blue flames at (14:43 youtube vid time / 14:37 your record time) will take energy from you and you got hit 100% at this moment without any energy being lost,...please explain! :-) Also, compared to my real arcade game, this version certainly seems to be a little on the sped-up side, the music is VERY fast,...please explain again,...emulation not set correctly?! :-/ Zeus never trusts emulation.
+Zeusdaz - The Unemulated Retro Game Channel Hi, it's very interesting what you say about the blue flame. In the emulator, the hit box of those blue flames (in fact I did it twice, the first one is at 13:26) appears a bit after the flame itself. I'm doing the jump just before it get the hit. By the way, I was curious about it and I tried the recopilation "Taito Legends Power Up" and it also works as the emulator. But, it would be great if you can certify that in the original board doesn't happen. About the music, I dont know. Maybe, because the video codification, the tone change a little bit but it should not significantly change. I have the same video with a lot more quality here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dubvF3NTCoc.html Maybe it would be better to use it for those things. Regards.
+mukankakuna Well going back to the actual arcade machine I can certainly confirm mine runs a normal 100m sprinter speed wheras this video of yours is more like Ben Johnson on the juice, it really is very fast compared to the arcade board, you certainly cannot wield the sword on it as fast as you are doing it here,...It's just not possible to hit things that fast on the arcade machine. Still, you still made it look stupidly easy which it isn't ;-)
+Zeusdaz - The Unemulated Retro Game Channel The mega fast sword is due the ring (not the one but almost). At 2:20 (2:13 on my timer) you may have noticed I go back to kill two enemies. Not the greatest idea in a speed run but, there is a good reason. One of them have the ring and the ring is the only item that you don't lose by time. By the way, I have a video where I explain all the things I'm doing (but it's in perfect spanish).
Yeah I collected that ring but it don't speed it up as much as this footage and only lasts around 30 seconds,...and any idea what that other symbol on the intro screen does?...it just states a question mark next to it.
+Zeusdaz - The Unemulated Retro Game Channel That's the rod. As long as you have it when you kill an enemy all the enemies in screen die (but only the same type of enemies as the one you killed. e.g.: If you kill a lion all the lions in screen die). Oh wow, are you sure the ring expires after 30 seconds? That's a big difference. I just try the "Taito Legends Power Up" and the ring have no time. Are you sure you have an original board or may it be a bootleg one?
That was a huge scare. This is a very, very rare bug. In fact is the rarest I found througt all my gameplays. Normally the dragon die with 5 hits, but, some how, in this particular play, it took me 10 hits. And no only that, as you point out, the dragon's fire did not hit me. In short, this damm dragon almost kill me (in the real world), hehe. By the way, this bug cost me some precious seconds. PS Congrats, you are the first one to comment it.
I nearly chucked my joystick through the telly trying to copy you're vid. It's worse than robocop. At least with that one you just keep playing on and don't have to start half the leval again lol.
