The thing with Chris' design is that, it was meant to be like that, it was meant to make people think he's no big deal, they made a female voice him, and made his intro quote in Japanese "You look so Strong", all of that so the moment he transforms into Orochi, everyone gets caught by surprise
Also, I think Chris and Yashiro design ment to be how they out of time during their death in '97. Only Shermie who I bet she run into a nearest shopping malls after ressurection is an exception.
But then again Chris becoming the vessel for Orochi makes sense since he turns out to be the team's menace of society. When the other two just wants to vibe he's planning to kidnap Kyo's girlfriend again.
If it weren't for Chris' age I think this game would literally make him one of the most-loved husbandos in the series. And for some weirdos they do despite the age anyway. He is the only 14 year old in the history of the FUCKING UNIVERSE to actually look *cool*.
And considering how fucking stupid they went with "just throw every cool thing possible" onto protags like K' and especially Shun'ei so much so that they circle around into the "so cool it's uncool" territory, Kyo looking really cool is very impressive.
he was like "ok what i'm going to wear in KoF XV and he grabbed the pants of KoF 96 the jacket from KoF 98 and the bandana of KoF 2002" (is an example)
@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN I agree on Shun'ei but for me K' is the character that felt like they really tries hard to make him cool yet actually pulled it off.
The simplicity of Shizuru's design I think is there because she's supposed to be viewed in motion, so to speak. Her design is accentuated by the clones and movement blur and all that of her moves, but it comes off as flat without any of that.
There's also the practical matter of frequently needing to put multiple copies of her model on screen, and a simpler model is less of a risk to impact performance, especially in a Chizuru vs Chizuru match with 4 fighters on screen.
@@Ether101_Prime I thought that too! The "kinda" traditional japanese cerimonial clothes but with a modern touch. Looks modest, composed, pure and yet pretty and calm.
@AT Productions But it's Terry, he's SNK's flagship character, he doesn't have to evolve and he can still look fine(doesn't mean he hasn't for better or for worse). But Yashiro is one of those characters that isn't so predominant that he can change. He did get a new jacket, so he did change, but I agree with Max that he looks really 90s yet, he's almost too true to his '97 design.
Well shermie is honestly dressed pretty realistically. She's dressed like the typical club goer. Those girls be moving fast as hell in those heels too lol. I love K', but him and Hwaorang look like they shop at the same stores lol. Don't know if I seen anyone in real life dressed like him that wasn't a woman apart of a biker club
We legit need to stop with the "girls wouldn't dress like that in rea life, go touch grass" mentality. I went out. I touched grass. Half the ladies walking outside looked just like my Japanese roleplaying games.
Some of the biggest glow-ups for me were Kyo, Iori, and Antonov. The former 2 had imo their worst designs to date in KoF XIV but in this they turned it around and gave us top 2 designs for them in KoF XV, Antonov's design was fine in the last game but this time around its steller. I actually prefer Yashiro's former design but Chris and Shermie have good updated outfits, and for new characters Dolores looks incredible.
Andy straight up has the biggest glow up in all of gaming, he was already a mediocre looking character but 14 just drove him into the ground. And now in 15, he looks better than most of the cast, in fact I think he looks better than Mai, no wonder Mai is crazy for him.
I agree about King's design, though I really like how she looks here. One would be forgiven for thinking she was a waitress or bartender instead of a bouncer without the jacket.
Andy has always looked good until KOF 14, but as it was the latest KOF game, I think people forget that. People saying Andy in KOF 15 is the best he has ever looked are just casuals or haters. Andy not looking good in games like KOF 96/97, 98, 2002... is just blasphemous.
Yea Andy straight up has the biggest glow up in all of gaming, he was already a mediocre looking character but 14 just drove him into the ground. And now in 15, he looks better than most of the cast, in fact I think he looks better than Mai, no wonder Mai is crazy for him.
You know i have to say that this KOF seems to have a lot of personality just the way some people talk to each other the face expressions it really seems like a lot of passion went into this game. And people say this KOF has no soul or that characters look bland and don't have personality's
I feel like 14 had a rough time, but I think this game is hitting its stride and really making something akin to their earlier days. And I’m glad for it.
@@saiko_oro some random idiots i saw them in reviews about this game being negative plus to make it worse another idiot refunded the game just because of the graphics i'm defiantly going to mention that shit like what the hell man. Just because of the graphics
Yashiro's choker is the best part to me. Everything else on the character is boring but the earrings + choker but still being super buff man really goes a long way.
I personally don't think his design is boring, but it is definitely the choker and other little elements that truly bring out the rock star vibe. Dude is eccentric as hell for that. Also, people seem to forget that Iori also had a choker on when they bring up Yashiro.
Badasses in suits isn't a fair competition. Suits are just drip af by default. You can remove layers and it's still drip, you can add accessories and it'll still be drip. It's just easy to be drip. Unless we're talking about Salaryman suits. They can somehow defeat the drip of suits with their depression aura. Also they buy cheap polyester garbage with not even a starch to make the dress look crisp. Fcuk Salaryman suits.
Fun fact. The japanese name of the Art of Fighting series (where Ryo came) is Ryūko no Ken an obvious reference to Hokuto no Ken (Fist of The North Star)
Shun'Ei was raised in the mountains isolated from civilization. He has zero fashion sense, but he tries to fit in by dressing like the city boys. This is lore.
Yeah KoF XIV had the worst designs for both of them imo, now we got my send favourite Kyo design (behind Orochi Saga Kyo) and my new favourite outfit for Iori.
Lesson learned: Max really likes jackets. And so do I! Jackets are awesome and most characters have potential with them, either for main or alternative outfits.
@Maximilian Dood - Ralf is meant to be Stallone's Rambo and Clark is meant to be Arnold's Dutch from Predator. It makes more sense in their original IP 'Ikari Warriors' as they are both shirtless with mud/paint body camo like Rambo 2 and Predator had. Very happy to see you enjoying Ralf, as he's my fav from the two as well. If they do a new Metal Slug for like Switch or something, I'd love to see both Clark and Ralf as well as Leona, Heidern, and Whip be featured on the roster.
If you think your average teenager(outside of China, where that style is popular) would ever wear anything even remotely that busy and all over the place, you seriously need to go outside. It takes so much effort to accomplish the dedicated asymmetry of Shun’Ei’s look that it defeats the entire idea of not knowing exactly what you want to wear through its frankly unrealistic precision. You can’t just “lol teenager” your way through poor character design.
I think Athena's design is actually less idol-like in this game compared to others. It's more in the line of "traditional asian costume" kind of thing, though not specifically any country (maybe a bit more chinese), which is what she was more like from 94 to 98, even if she was already an idol.
I thought Athena’s design was pretty good. Not deserving of a score of 6…. I thought Max was harsh with that score. I get it he didn’t like her hair. I would give her a score of 8.5 or let’s make it 9 😁
I really like the new designs in KOFXV and how the designs from KOFXIV look so much better in the new engine. I think it’s mostly due to the art direction being better with more color and the characters models being more expressive with a mix of anime and realism, mostly from the anime side.❤️
Yes you get it the way KOFXV looks is exactly where SNK is going for it looks like a 3D anime game and it looks good. So many people seem to not understand how this game wanted to look
@@Salty-Josh what I love about the art direction is that colors pop and the characters have more expressions and personality which is a reminisce to the classic sprites of the older games. I love Athena’s new haircut and design as it’s a mix of her previous designs wrapped into one (outfit is from KOF 96 and haircut is from KOF 99 while some colors came from her KOFXIV outfit). Iori’s new costume looks really cool and Heidern looks very sexy and cool in this game.
I’ll be honest, I really do wish they’d change King’s look. She’s not a bouncer or bartender anymore, she’s a Bar owner, put her in a nice suit that shows her status as a woman in charge. I also feel that Ryo and Yuri could do with a change of Gi. Step away from the classic looks and try something different
I do like Krohnen's (K9999) redesign. My only complain would be the long hair, it doesn't look right on him. I like how he has a more biker style in his new outfit, which fits with his love for motorcycles and also because it is a reference to the movie Akira. Tetsuo and Kaneda were part of a biker gang. In fact, those googles Krohnen wears look similar to Kaneda's.
I can’t wait to see how Rugal will look in this game when he eventually comes out as DLC. I also really want to see Adelheid (my favourite KOF character), Krizalid, Shen Woo, Duo Lon and Mr. Karate in this game.
@@ombra711 yea he looks great ngl. Yea him giving mai and Chris 10s was weird to me. I know he has some weird thing with Chris so he was trolling like usual
Bro that was me when he gave Mai a 10. Mai is easily one of the most boring SNK designs in my opinion. I think Angel and Shermie are much more interesting fan service styled characters than Mai is
@@ombra711 Just because it does what it sets out to do doesn't mean its a 10. Like yeah if the custome fits the character and their personality that's good but that's not automatic 10 out of 10 worthy. I feel like a big part of it is Y'know actually looking cool or interesting. And Chris' design just isn't that cool. He's just a teen wearing normal teen clothes, which yeah I know that's the point but just not very cool looking.
I understand Max’s remarks about that fine line of sexy and cool. I LOVE Shermie and Mai because even though the designs let them all hang out they look amazing. A huge problem with “pandering” sexualized character design imo is too often devs will go for fanservice with no thought to the character’s backstory and behavior. KoF seems to really get it right, you even see it in some of their masc designs too
I have watched Kill la Kill and Cutie Honey Those animes taught me that fanservice costumes for female characters can also look badass. SNK Heroines also has good costumes. Leona's costume based on Heidern is amazing.
I never thought SNK was out of line with any of the characters outfits being pandering. They fit with the characters and their personalities very well. I think SNK has been on point with most design choices throughout all their various games/series.
I'll be honest, my two favourite SNK girls are King and Blue Mary. They have a badass-style sexiness to them. A character like Mai literally looks like a stripper, and I can't get into it. You put a dude in outfits that skimpy and people would flip their shit talking about how it's super inappropriate to see a guy's ass/underwear.
Call me crazy but as much as I like Krohnen and K9999, I actually prefer Nameless over them especially his recent Boss Syndrome design in King of Fighters All Stars, I wish that would have been his actual design in the first place. Maybe it’s because I absolutely love Nameless’s theme song and his Boss Syndrome theme is absolute God Tier perfection, and Nameless’s red flames are cooler then Krohnen’s in my opinion.
I respect your opinion. I personally don't like Nameless' design. It is too edgy for my taste. K9999's design was simple but effective. One of the main reasons why I don't like Nameless is how he was made only to replace K9999 Edit: Although I have to agree. Nameless's theme is great.
I absolutely love the concept of nameless' powers and how he expresses it through his animations with the glove. But yeah, i think he's a bit too edgy for my tastes
He was a trash desig. Targeted toward visual Kie fans. It was a failure. Not sure why they ran from the tetsuo ripoff, they were allowed to use it, but for whatever reason hated it and gave us emo man instead.
27:48 Yeah, blue mary wears the jacket in real bout fatal fury series, wich IMO is the best Design she ever had. Lets hope it comes back as dlc costume at least. XD
You mean thar green jacket from Real Bout Special and Real Bout 2. Right? She also have that costume as default in KOFMI Regulation A I like it. I also like her alternate costume in Regulation A She looks cute and sexy.
I love how everyone has their own body proportions and shape. In Mortal Kombat 11 most of the characters body's are nearly interchangeable and heaven forbid if you asked for the fans service of old.
That's true.... I never thought about it but you're right. Almost all MK character proportions are practically the same... Well it could be that way because it would lessen the work for animating dismemberments and whatnot but idk
Overall, I think we can agree that this has been the best the KOF fighters have looked in 3D, if not, ever. Definitely compliments all around for the fantastic work jumping from 14 to 15.
I like how SNK/KOF designs tells the story of whats going on with the youth at the time. 80s they have AoF: Ryo is a karateka and Robert is a Yuppie. 90s: Iori; the Yankii; Chizuru is a Bodikon(I guess); Kyo, the shonnen protagonist Late 90s: K' with the "Dark Millenium" aesthetic of Matrix. Mid 2000s: Ash is a emo. And now: Isla looks like a hip hop/graffiti artist.
@@jesusbarrera6916 nah man, kpop artists have a much better sense of fashion. they have a whole team just to advise in clothing and presentation. i'd bet you would never see one dressing as uncohesive as shun'ei
I wish Ryo and Robert looked like their Neo Geo Battle Coliseum versions. That Buriki One Ryo all dressed in black is the coolest Ryo has ever looked, and that Robert with the long curly hair they made to go with him in NGBC is the coolest looking Robert.
17:04 I think my only real problem with Athena is her pupils are so much bigger than everyone else. Like agressively bigger, to the point I can't see emotion in the character. It's like a dog or shark where you can't see the whites of their eyes, so they just look dead-eyed.
OH MY GOD, SOMEONE ELSE FINALLY SAID IT!!! I thought I was the only one who had a problem with her eyes. They are fucking massive! My hope is they give her a '97 or 2002 DLC costume and remodel her face with it...
Because that's the charm of Athena. She has a moe design. Some people (especially Max) really hate moe looking ladies in fighting games which is unfair
KoF XIII was the pinnacle of sprite based fighting games, the fact that You could change the color of the Sprites was awesome and shows how SNK literally knew the way of the sprites works to the point that You could change the color of it without altering the boundries of them but that technology hasnt developed on 3D, granted there are 3d ganes where You can changed the color of assets at your Will(Lost Ark costumes are an example) but SNK are just now being able to grasp the tools to make good 3d models(KoF XIV shows that they barely knew how to make models in 3D) eventually we Will get them, and if not ay least we will have mods like in GGS
Man, I feel like Terry's XIV design is really underrated. It feels like a nice balance between classic FF and Garou bomber jacket, giving off a more chill and laid-back vibe. I also really liked all the extra detail on his hat and jacket, but that might just be my personal preference because I really like that style. XIV Terry just felt more mature while not completely different from the classic, and I'm not sure that being huge and bulky really fits Terry.
Tbh I somewhat agree, but at the same time I feel like his sleeveless design is too iconic at this point to be changed. My fave design of Terry was probably from one of these mid-2000s games where they gave him a sleeveless hoodie under his jacket, and that really made the classic design work for a modern setting imo.
His XIV design overall was really good, but I think the graphics then didn’t give it its full potential. I would like to see it come back, maybe as another DLC outfit like his Garou jacket ^^
Yeah, he pulls off the blatant cool dude look really well because he's simplistically cool. He just has a black jumpsuit, a red glove, sunglasses, white hair, and a darker skin tone and that's all he needs to sell his coolness. A lot of characters in other media try way too hard to make their blatant cool dude look cool and it just ends up being a mess.
@@djpegao K it is Shun ei, but with colorful characters, wait two or 3 series and shun ei probably one of cool looking character. He just bit late to growth unlike K.
@@ashchisalleh1454 sorry but unless shun'ei costume is redesign is not going to happen the diference is that K was actually cool at the time (and he can pulled out even if it wasn't ) and this is possible because they keep the design simple on the other hand shun'ei is everything and a tween think is cool but together on a mess
Isla is a stand out for me. Just love that spunky aesthetic. Meanwhile I still cannot understand what is going on with Shun'Ei's design at all. He almost feels like you hit "Random" on a character creation screen.
I agree with you on Shun' Ei, but also with Max. I feel like it's somewhat a generational thing as Max said, tho it doesn't change his "Random Button" look. More younger people probably think he looks cooler than adults around 30+ (like me).
With Shun'Ei it's like they added every design quirk they could think of and then forgot to pare it back to the essentials. Like, you're not done when there's nothing left to add, you're done when there's nothing left to take away.
Isla fits well as the typical urban streetwear or graffiti tagger fashion. It has a theme there, it mixes well. Shun'ei is a walking fashion disaster. The jacket hanging around his neck is the biggest offender of all. It feels like it tries to replicate Buggy The Clown from One Piece but fails to do so. The jacket is buttoned up on his neck over a collared shirt while the jacket is also collared. The necktie also completes the mess. Either remove the jacket and let him use only the shirt and tie, or wear the jacket as an unbuttoned outerwear instead of hanging it around like that. It would fix the look much more.
Shun'Eis design would be fine if they took the red or purple out of it and rolled up his other pant leg, theoretically it should work for a devil may care "gamer" arch type character but the combonation of the Teal, blue, orange, purple, red AND white makes him a confusing mess to read visually especially seeing as the Asymmetry in his design is kept exclusively to this pants and glowy hands but his recolors definitely show that its his color palate that really creats the visual confusion Edit: HELL if they aged him up a little and kept the desgin notes (like the loose tie and jacket over the shoulders) but put him in a 3 piece suit with the core colors of his jacket hed look cool as hell
To me Dolores was SNK saying "how do we put Bayonetta in the game without getting sued?" Iori does look really good now, probably better than ever, and Kyo is just his XIII design with some elements from his classic costume. Isla is definitely an attempt at the same idea they were going for with Shun'ei but this time they did a far better job. I kinda miss when K' and Kula wore the same pants and almost the same jacket but in different colors, it made it very clear that they're meant to be like siblings. And I must disagree about Krohnen, he makes a lot more sense as K''s rival now that he actually mirrors some of his design elements (they're just two versions of a biker outfit) than back when K9999 was simply a carbon copy of Tetsuo.
Isla probably has my favorite visual design of any KOF character. They knocked it out of the park with her. Especially going with a color pallet that is very different from the norm. Also I know he design hasn't changed basically at all since XIV, but I love Vanessa's design so much. Outside of the impracticality of the heels, I think Vanessa's outfit is great. She looks so sick and fulfils the role of cool boxer girl REALLY well.
Vanessa wearing sandals is cute 😊 I don't care if it is not realistic for a fight. Especially in the KOF a series where we have gods, cyborgs, robots, ghosts, aliens, demons, people who can control the elements/psychic powers/magic or even dude who can transform his arm into a fleshy tentacle or a drill.
I agree with Dolores. Her design would’ve been better imho if she leaned less towards Mai and more towards Vanessa. Better yet something like Vice or Mature. Sex appeal without showing too much.
i think Shermie's design is F*CKING AMAZING! i mean sure the idea designing her was "hahah she HOT" but i think it came out even better than the original (and i always loved the og)
Fun Fact: According to the KOF14 manga, King of Dinosaurs still wears his Tizoc mask under his dinosaur mask.
2 года назад
Which in the lucha libre world wouldn't be unheard of, many luchadores wore a more open mask below in order to eat. Keepin' the secret identity was a big deal, especially among legends like El Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras (which Japanese fans love) and such.
In terms of character design you can go down the cool route, or the hot route, but there is also the cute route in most 'anime' stuff. That's why characters like Meitenkun and Athena are my favourite characters here.
Really like most of the redesigns in this entry! Including characters who weren't really considered favorites of mine before like Elisabeth, Antonov, Benimaru, Athena. The best ones for me I would say are Iori Yagami and Shermie, they're perfect.
Dolores looks like she'd be perfect as an umbran witch. Bayonetta making hair constructs and Dolores making big mud constructs and styling on angels? Perfect.
I personally love him. People need to stop projecting feelings from other characters on him... Andy is not Terry, simple as that, like Ken is not Ryu. They are meant to be different. That is not a reason to hate or bash a character. 🤷🏽♂️
@@meganinten0078 There you go! I prefer his 97 style, but thats definately a great one also. How people think this is his best he has ever been yet are most definately casuals or don't know KOF at all.
The only thing I hate is that, this gorgeous gal, with golden accents, extremely sexy, diva - like appereance, has mud powers Really, you look at her and think "maybe she'll fire these streaks of golden lasers around, or maybe she'll create purple flames like iori or maybe golden flames or white needle like lasers etcetcetc", nope, mud / clay
I must be the only one on the whole planet that actually finds monke Máxima kinda cute haha xD He's a very cool character and when you are playing him you don't even focus on his face
Man seeing the roster you always get reminded why KOF has the coolest characters of all fighting franchises, i wish to see Kim & Takuma in this engine, also i agree with max that Athena & Mai are so iconic and timeless that just days ago kotobukiya "figures company" still made new ones for their 98 versions! Also i always loved king desgin since the art of fighting days and i can't believe how great these designs are after allll these years! I also think K is not trying to act cool.. he IS COOL XD i remember getting 99 back then and was so amazed by his style.. i can't believe he's not the new guy anymore he's actually classic and same with Kula and maxima 😂 man so happy with KOF love and coverage, i think rate the super should be when the next two dlc packs are out! Also its so funny how max hate but actually love andy xD Andy is the luckiest guy ever Mai is all over him 😂❤
Kof is the only fighting game I've played where I can confidently say I can main atleast 60% of the cast (compared to other games like Tekken where I can only main one character at a time), but then again, I grew up playing kof so 👍
Aside from how cool most of the character's costumes are, I gotta give it up for the faces and facial animations in this game. For a relatively lower budget game it would have been so easy to give all the female characters a generic doll face for example. But the fact that every character has unique facial features and great looking expressions and character acting really goes a long way. I really love how King looks in this game, with her face looking a little more "masculine", if that makes sense
I think KOFXV has some of the most solid designs in KOF history. It's definitely up there with some of the best. Personally I've always been a huge fan of Ikari Warriors aesthetically, and I actually prefer this Ash design. Side note: I'm just noticing there's no Vice or Mature 🤔
