In what was to be a little trip to the French River Visitor Centre for a hike turned out to be an extremely rare chance meeting with a Massasauga Rattlesnake which is Ontario's only venomous snake and is considered an Endangered Species in Ontario and can in Canada can only be found in Ontario. Enjoy the video!!
Special thanks to Kris from KrisK Productions for the drone footage at the end of the video.

For some reason I never thought the rattle snake would be that big. We have them at high falls now and they are babies compared to that. I'd die lol. Really cool to see however, through your hike @French River. Great video yet again.

+Rikki Duval Thanks so much Rikki for all your support and I'm glad you liked the video. The snakes you're referring to at high falls are milk snakes which are often mistaken for rattlesnakes. I don't mind snakes but at a distance is how I definitely prefer them!! Lol. Thanks again for watching & commenting..Doug

That was a pretty beefy buzzworm you ran into. I have this deal with those devils: they stay hid so I don't see them, they don't buzz or bite, and they get to live. Down here in Idaho we have plenty of non-venomous snakes to eat voles, field mice, and other critters. No need for old fang face. Nice video. Cheers.

Nice part of ontario - A buddy from the Nippising Reserve told me a friend of his was bit from that snake and said you don't die but you know you were bit. He was an OPP officer and over his time as a cop in the area yes he has dealt with them biting people. Its rare you have to step on them to get you to bite their quite docile apparently.
@PinetreeLine
@PinetreeLine 6 лет назад
+STEVE ROB That's exactly what I hear as well. You pretty much have to step on one for it to bite you otherwise they are shy and don't want to be bothered. I wouldn't be upset if I never see one again lol. Thanks for watching Steve!! Appreciate it!! Doug

It is actually a Northern Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon). You can identify it by the horizontal reddish or orangish blotches on the side of the snake that meet those horizontal lines on the back of the snake. If you aren’t sure what species of snake you see, contact the Ontario ministry of natural resources. Cool find! But, its not a Sauga.

Thanks for the information Evan!! I have realized since that it was indeed a water snake. I prefer not to meet up with any snakes 😂. Doug

well, we see rattlesnakes all the time here (texas) and copperheads too all the time, but i had zero idea they could handle the cold of canada. so, i'm very surprised. liked & thx!
@PinetreeLine
@PinetreeLine 6 лет назад
Yikes!! Snakes all the time? Not just any snakes either lol. I don’t know how you handle that especially if you love the outdoors. I’d assume there was one around every rock or tree lol. Surprisingly enough there is s very healthy population of rattlesnakes here primarily because they are a protected species here due to being deemed almost extinct years ago. None in my immediate area where I spend the vast majority of time in the woods but only about 30 miles south they are abundant. They have adapted to the cold of Canada by staying below the frost line during winter but above the water table. Thanks so much for watching Martina!! Appreciate it!! Doug

+Tranquil Nature Well this was a first for me and regardless of signage and rumours I didn't really expect to see one. Being endangered in Ontario and a shy species of rattler made things all the more incomprehensible as it was happening lol. I'm just back from eight days canoe camping on the French River and Georgian Bay. Saw both a Missasauga Rattlesnake and a Northern Water Snake. The former was rattling at me (and my dog), and the Water Snake was swimming in the water - immediately offshore and less than a metre from my feet. Both looked very similar and were similar sizes. This is the rattler - it was right at Georgian Bay near the Bad River rapids. photos.app.goo.gl/BzX4cnqE5Bzx7JJm7

I saw a massassauga rattler near westport ontario yesterday. My grandaughter and dog were with us. When the dog sniffed it the snake rattled...we all heard it. The snake was about 3 ft long.
@PinetreeLine
@PinetreeLine 5 лет назад
Yikes! It’s a very unsettling feeling cause they are so rarely seen. Like I said in the video, I didn’t want to believe it was a rattler even knowing that particular area of the French River is well known to be home to massassauga rattlesnakes. Thanks for sharing your experience Tracey! Have a great weekend! Doug

I first saw Mississauga rattle snakes in the French River area back in the 1960s. They were not very common then, but must be now. In 2009 I seen one at Rock Lake just south of Sudbury. They are moving north.

@PinetreeLine 5 лет назад
There’s no doubt they will eventually move north. I haven’t seen any others but I’ve heard of a few being seen in and around the south end of Sudbury in the long lake area. Thanks for your input and I appreciate you watching! Doug
