Free-motion quilt to your heart's content in Part II Raw Edge Applique (REA) Basics. We continue our three projects--tea cozy, trivet or table mat--in 5 steps, paying attention and trusting our reactions to what we are making. Following impulses, keeping the flow going, trusting that if we like it, it is good, and that if we don't like it, it is bad - these are the goals of intuitive sewing and REA. There aren't any mistakes if you like it, it is well-made, and it is beautiful. The final video will post within a week. Please let me know how things are going.

0:08 If you pin basted because of my other video, sorry. Please pick a different method: 1) Spray; 2) Hand sew; 3) Machine sew; 4) Work flat with minimal machine basting. Free-motion video at time stamp 4:33: • Free-Motion Quilt a Ta...
0:50 To do this, you'll need to practice your free-motion if you aren't proficient already
1:06 Pencil and paper practice: practice drawing yourself in and out of corners; practice changing directions; finding your shapes and the benefit of "making" potholders
4:13 Set up your machine for free-motion quilting; 14 needle is good; all-purpose construction thread in many colors is good for functional work
4:50 Choose thread by your level of free-motion and REA proficiency: beginner - match fabric and threads; intermediate - contrast to fabric but match top & bobbin thread; advanced - contrast fabric and top thread, but use neutral thread in the bobbin (which saves tons of time and bobbins)
5:52 STEP I. BUILD UP BACKGROUND - Start with big shapes; anchoring visually and physically; quickly cover some ground. Contrast in value, not just color.
7:08 All the principles of good design apply: Balance - Emphasis - Movement - Pattern - Repetition - Proportion - Rhythm - Variety - Unity - Contrast - Value - Whimsy - Juxtaposition
8:53 REA BASIC DO's & DON'Ts 1-7: 1) No tiny scraps, 2) Tight stitches at edge of shapes; 3) Don't stitch off your piece; 4) Obsess about bobbin tension a little; 5) Look at it from a distance; 6) Take Care of Your Body; 7) Mark trouble spots that YOU don't like - possibly...ugly puckers, baggy areas, cuts and holes, bobbin thread show through, ugly stitching
12:09 Handy Aids...gloves...marking tools (chalk and washable markers)...spray starch...washable fabric glue stick...curved tip embroidery scissors
16:42 Sketches can be helpful..and sometimes you might sleep on things.
16:55 STEP II. FILL IN MID-GROUND Enhance design with mid-sized, graphic elements and/or organic plant shapes
17:18 MORE REA DO'sand DON'Ts 8-12: 8) Switch thread a lot; 9) Trim to minimize overlap as you go; 10) Manage puckers; 11) Trim a little wiggle; 12) Find your motifs everywhere
18:49 REA skills accrue with time and practice...part of it is your attitude about your own sewing
20:18 My favorite fabric sings on everything
MORE REA DO'sand DON'Ts 13-15: 13) Sew fabrics together if they sing together; 14) Zigzags are more challenging than sinuous lines in terms of stitch quality; 15) Experiment. Go a little crazy. Don't be matchy-matchy. No nitpicking. PLAY
20:56 Later we can do anything to fix mistakes and add embellishments... buttons... beads... ribbons... lace... embroidery... paint... marker... glitter... tassels.. .jewelry parts... to our hearts' content
22:57 STEP III. FOREGROUND Add color highlights, refine composition, make any repairs. Clean backside of loose threads periodically as you go.
26:18 STEP IV. FINAL QUILTING & PLAN EMBELLISHMENTS Quilt between elements, adding detail and dimension; plan final bells & whistles
27:44 STEP V. WASH & DRY Press from behind. Clean up frayed edges. Continue planning final bells & whistles
See you in a week or less!

This is the MOST sufficient, most informative, most professional and the most relaxing instructional video on a free-motion quilting techniques I've ever seen so far (and I've seen a lot, I mean a LOTS of them. I am not a professional, but not the beginner either, but this video has a power of giving you a such a confidence that everything is possible when you put some effort to learn and to do it. THANK YOU so much, dear Zazu! P.S. Special thanks for such a soothing background music. It was not in one of those "rush-rush" paced and not overlapping your voice, which is very important in any instructional video.

+Diana Wright We'll see how people like the whole idea of un-fused applique that you make up as you go along. I know art quilters sometimes say that they are like painters but their paint is fabric. I'm not sure about that, but I do like techniques that allow you to build from the bottom, the same way you do when you paint. I AM tickled when someone approaches my booth at an art fair and says the wall pieces looked like paintings from a distance. I don't know. The video really just skims the surface and was tricky to keep under thirty minutes. It can be as simple and straight-forward as you want, or as elaborate and detailed as you care to make it. There is so much more to cover, but honestly, easy projects seem to be what most viewers want. Yet so many people I have spoken to over the years want to express their complexity in fabric. So putting this information into the world is important to me. I hope we can just keep feeling our way forward on this journey....Your reactions are helpful to me BTW

I had never heard of REA. I love quilts, but I am NOT exact enough to piece. Piecing makes me cry. I love fabric. I used to make my own clothes as a teen, and I used to have a second job in a fabric store, too. You know how much of that paycheck I brought home...😉 The sewing bug bit hard recently, just to get my attention again. I made a copy of my favorite apron out of denim. I want to make a big coat; wanted to embroider it, but wasn't sure exactly what to do. Now I know! I'm going to practice on these little projects, just to get the hang of REA and free motion quilting. Ok, now I'm going to fan-girl a bit: I love you, I'm so glad I found you, Beth. Your voice is pleasing and easy to listen to. I'm looking forward to learning more from you, and applying my art skills to this venture. Thank you so much!

Thank you SO MUCH for making these beautiful videos!!! I've been looking for information on raw edge applique that made sense to me and the method your teach is the first that I like and I've watched A LOT of them. I appreciate that you are showing intermediate level techniques as well and hope you continue to do more. I live far out in the country and I don't have access to classes. I also love the uplifting sayings that pop up in the videos and how positive you are. I have attended many lectures and art classes in the past on different subjects and you are an excellent teacher. I'm thrilled to have found your channel and have signed up. I also purchased the book you recommended and am looking forward to reading it. I've flipped through and read many different books on applique and they were all basically the same.. This one looks like what I've been searching for. I do have one question, after washing the applique, trimming and cleaning up the loose threads does the material stop "shredding" after a couple of washings once it hits the stitching along the edge? I want to make clothing and purses using this technique. Again, thank you for the inspiration and sharing you hard learned knowledge.
@ZazusStitchArt
@ZazusStitchArt 2 года назад
It is like cut-off jeans. Most of the fraying happens on the first wash. But you'll need tight stitching at the margins, tightly grained fabrics for elements you trim, and to trim the right amount. I try to cover it throughout the videos. I hope that helps. Also test your techniques and watch how your sewing behaves. I really never had problems with what I was doing and putting out there. Thanks and good luck.

I am loving your videos. Thank you for sharing your art and your techniques with us. I may have missed this but is there a problems with too many layers? I mean how many layers are fine before it becomes too thick for sewing. Do you try to limit the number of layers in one area? Thanks.
@ZazusStitchArt
@ZazusStitchArt 5 лет назад
How heavy-duty your machine is limits the number of layers. That is why I am using an industrial machine. Also , going through too many layers can bend your needle bar or even crash a motherboard. Unless you have an industrial machine, stick to only 3 or 4 layers. You can still achieve a visually complex and appealing design. Thanks for the question.

@ZazusStitchArt
@ZazusStitchArt 7 лет назад
I buy fabrics everywhere. Initially it was all local, but more and more I get new, fun prints online and take advantage of batik sales etc. on an ongoing basis, I just buy what I like; sometimes I choose kitchen prints that I think will be popular; I try to cover the whole color wheel; and then I fill in any gaps: "I need tan fabrics" or whatever.

Totally enchanted w/your tutorials. I'm very visual and I got Rosemary's book a couple years ago after stumbling on one of your videos where you talk about her. However, I was still working [retired now] and not in a space where I could relax enough to let go of structure, so I put it aside. Now it makes more sense to me and with the visual of your tutorials I 'get' what she's putting forth. Like unleashing my inner hippie [finally, after 50 years lol]. I can see where it's like meditation in a way, especially since I have the time now and am not frustrated from the 8-5 routine like I was last year. Quick question...are you also using serger thread [cones] along with regular spools [depending on what you are doing]? One of the first things I was told when learning to quilt years ago was fill ten bobbins and it always stuck with me. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge!!!!
@ZazusStitchArt
@ZazusStitchArt 4 года назад
I am 100% guilty of being willing to use anything that sews in well to decoratively quilt a piece...including variegated serger thread, some of my favorites. I don’t use serger thread for structural seams. Never. It is one of my few nevers...

I am using a semi-industrial Bernina 950. It is a monster capable of 2000 stitches per minute, which I bought to sew to sell. I was terrified of it at first but immediately removed the needle guard anyway! It takes up a lot of space and can't easily be taken to the shop for repairs. At this point, I don't ever want to sew enough to buy another one! I learned to free-motion quilt on a Bernina 153, which stitches more beautifully even today (1000 per minute), but it had a motherboard, and there was a fear that I would crash it going through so many layers. Berninas are great machines, complete with a few idiosyncrasies, and mine have been a bit abused. I think I would look carefully at Janome on the home sewing side and Juki on the industrial side if i were in the market today. Whatever I did, I would look for a barely used machine, for the reasons you might buy a barely used car. I wish you the best, Beth

I think you can free-“motion with it set to the tiniest stitch. I often forget to adjust the length, and then I find myself compensating for the length with the speed that I move my hands, as I see what is coming out of the needle. Practice until it becomes second nature. Good luck! And Happy Sewing!

I only wish you could do this with a normal sewing machine with the standard foot
@ZazusStitchArt
@ZazusStitchArt 6 лет назад
Many, many sewing machines will drop their feed dogs to do free-motion quilting and raw-edge applique. Some machines can have the feed dogs covered or otherwise defeated so you can move freely. You still probably should find a universal darning foot of some sort. I wish you the best.
@cdvax11
@cdvax11 5 лет назад
I never drop feed dogs. Instead set it to it's lowest setting. They don't interfere on my aging Pfaff. But, you do need the free motion foot. They make them to fit all machines and aren't very expensive. Check eBay if you're not near a shop.

Great video. I'm just starting to learn about this type of sewing, is that a quilting pressure foot that can be attached to any kind of machine?
@ZazusStitchArt
@ZazusStitchArt 7 лет назад
No, unfortunately the foot you need is specific to your machine. Luckily, with the internet, it should be easy to figure out what type of darning or embroidery foot is available for your situation. You could also talk to someone at a shop that sells your brand of sewing machine. I have a video that talks a lot about Free Motion Quilting in general, which you need in order to do Raw-Edge Applique. Unfortunately it is more of an intermediate tutorial, not really for a true beginner. Here it is, in case it is of interest: Free-Motion Quilt a Table Mat | Practice Makes Perfect Part 1 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5hNkce45B4k.html Oh, if you have trouble finding what foot you need, please contact me again, and I'll try to point you in the right direction. It is possible that you will need a different machine to begin free-motion quilting and beyond. Thanks for the great question.
